Soil layers

Soil is made up of many layers. Look at the diagram below:

The very top layer is made up of dead leaves and animals. This is called Humus.

Top soil - This is where plants grow thier roots.

The soil here usually has more rock and stone in it.

This layer is called bedrock.

( It has very large rocks in it )

Soil is full of living and dead plants and animals. Worms, ants and many other insects live, eat and die in the soil. Bacteria breaks down dead plants and animals making the soil rich in nutrients.
