Types of Stem Cells

advertisement
EMBRYONIC
SOMATIC (adult)
•Taken from the inner cell mass
•Pluripotent
•Destruction of human embryos
•Can potentially divide
uncontrollably
•Taken from a willing donor
•Generate cell types from where they
came
•Limited potential
•Low abundance
•Difficult to isolate/grow
•Need to use in combination with
immune suppressing drugs
STEM CELLS
INDUCED PLURIPOTENT
•From skin/blood cells
•ES potential, but from
adults
•Propagate indefinitely
•No immune response threat
•Not advanced to
therapeutic transplants yet
•Not guaranteed safe
THERAPEUTIC CLONING (to create ES)
•Low risk of immune response
•Less dependence on anti-rejection
drugs
•Time consuming
•Expensive
•Same destruction of embryos as ES
•Used for replacement of organs
