Comprehensive Review
Sanggunian Kabataan (SK) is a council that meant for the youths in every barangay in
the Philippines. SK is basically the way to bring all the problems and issues of the youth and
pass it to the upper sector in the government. It is a mandate under the 1987 Constitution that
the state recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation-building. It shall inculcate in the youth
patriotism and nationalism and encourage their involvement in public and civic affairs. As
what Mr. Kim said, SK should abolish because it enters the youth to be part of the politics
which open their eyes to start corruption at young age.
There’s a lot of reason that SK should not abolished, first it is not only training ground,
but an avenue for the youth in taking an important role such as good leaders of the community,
next is they will serve as the voice of youth in the community, next is their projects helps to
enhance the difference skills and abilities of the youth in the community and last is they will
become the representative of the youth in various government programs and projects.
Correspondence concerning this problem with Sanggunian Kabataan, removing its
existence won’t change a thing. SK should continue to serve the youth, what the government
should do is to decrease its budget and properly control it. Corruption occurs when they have
the freedom to use every money that comes from the fund or budget, no transparency of every
project that made and unproperly utilizing the budget.
Every Barangay that have SK will hold a request to the government for every project
they will made. It should be validated, monitored and check if they are qualified for those
projects and if it is necessary to their barangay. Government should not hand-over the budget
to avoid the corruption of every SK officer and even Barangay Officer. This kind of method
will have its transparency to the public, so no corruption will be made.
The Sanggunian Kabataan, the young leaders should promote awareness on drugs,
teenage pregnancy, and other issues affecting us. They are the representative of the youths who
believes in youth empowerment, calls for gender equity, discourages discrimination, promotes
unity, and advocates protection of our beloved Mother Earth.
