GOVERNMENT REQUIREMENTS There are two requirements for government class besides the textbook assignments, news quizzes, tests, etc. The two requirements are: community service and attending a local government board or council meeting. Attendance, a detailed typed report of the community service/government meeting, and verification paperwork must be completed to earn any points on this assignment. The order that you complete each requirement is up to you. Each requirement will count a maximum of 75 points. One of the two requirements must be completed and turned in approximately one week prior to the end of the first and second grading period. The deadlines for this semester are: Friday, September 28 and Friday, December 7, 2018. Requirements will be accepted on the following Monday but only for one-half credit. (If you are absent on the Friday or the Monday the requirement is due, it will be your responsibility to get the requirement to school by a parent, a friend, or you can drop off the requirement in the office.) NO REQUIREMENT WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE MONDAY FOLLOWING THE DEADLINE FOR ANY REASON. COMMUNITY SERVICE Community service must be volunteer work (on your own time- not school time) performed for your school, your church, a political party, a political candidate, or a social agency (Not a local business)- TriState Food Bank, "Native American Days" at Angel Mounds, various Walk-A-Thons,"Boo at the Zoo", etc. If in doubt as to whether your selection will qualify as community service, ask Mr. Scheller. Three hours of community service, a detailed typed/word processed report (a minimum of one typed page, double spaced, no higher than 12 Font) the name of the agency, the date and times of the service, what exactly you did (describe in detail), how it contributed to the agency/person or group for which the service was performed, what you feel you gained from the experience, and paperwork verifying the performance of the community service, must be turned in to complete this requirement. (The necessary paperwork consists of a statement on the agency's stationery and signed by the director, political party chairman, or candidate.) The community service must be performed during this semester. No “double dipping”— using community service that was used for another class, a form of punishment, or service project. Points will be based on the detail and completeness of the report and the number of hours of service. LOCAL GOVERNMENT BOARD AND COUNCIL MEETING Another of your requirements for government class this semester is attending a meeting of one of the local government boards or councils listed below, and then, turning in a detailed typed/word processed report (a minimum of one typed page, double spaced, no higher than 12 Font) of the experience. The report should contain the following: date, time in attendance name of the meeting, where held (civic center - room number), the number and names of the elected members on the board/council, what was discussed while you were in attendance, and your reaction to the meeting (such as importance of items being discussed and/or what you learned etc). To your detailed typed report, you must attach a signature of one of the board/council members to verify your attendance at the meeting. Points will be based on correctly identifying the number and names of the elected members on the board/council, properly identifying other personnel in the front of the room, the detail and accuracy of the report, your insight into what transpired at the meeting and time spent at the meeting.
