Case Study: Ultra-long Distance Heated Pipelines
Wood Group Kenny has extensive experience long distance heated pipelines and facilities. Experience
includes the Cairn Energy Mangala Crude Oil Export Pipeline in India, at the time the longest buried
trace heated pipeline in the world.
WGK Involvement:
The 24” onshore export pipeline runs 664km from Rajasthan to Salaya on the Gujarat coast.
A ‘skin effect’ heating system and PUF insulation maintained product above the 63°C
wax appearance temperature. WGK undertook concept and FEED engineering and
were responsible for the full system design including pipeline route selection, process,
heating, power & utility engineering as well as pumping stations, pigging facilities,
tankage and SPM loading facility.
What We Delivered:
TThe Cairn Energy pipeline project was executed by a joint task force from
our London and Delhi offices who delivered a technically complex, first-ofa-kind project that is now successfully operational.
The experience gained on the Cairn export pipeline system has since
been applied on similar projects in Uganda and Kenya, where the
export pipelines cover longer distances of 1000km and more.
