A profile of one of the panel members – Michael McGoogan started
UnderGlobal while at age 14 attending school in Canberra. His company grew from
the bedroom of his parents’ house to now be the 3rd largest web service provider in
Australia employing some 70 staff. Michael was recently awarded the 2012 Eastern
Region Emerging Category winner for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year
Award. Hear his secrets to success and his story about building a successful business
while still at school. “Michael’s philosophy is simple – “If you love what you do, you’ll
never work a day in your life”.
UMAT registrations now open
UMAT test is used specifically to assist with the selection of students into the
medicine, dentistry and health science degree programs at undergraduate level.
UMAT scores can be used for admission to any of the UMAT Consortium universities
ONLY in the year following the test. For example, results from UMAT2013 can be
used for undergraduate medicine or health science courses beginning in 2014 but
NOT 2015. Do not register for UMAT2013 unless you are planning to apply for a
course commencing in 2014 AND you meet the eligibility criteria specified in the
UMAT2013 Information Booklet.
UMAT2013 will be held on Wednesday 31 July 2013. UMAT is offered once a year
only. Registration is open.
Registrations will close at 5.00pm AEST 7 June 2013. Late registrations will be
accepted until 5.00pm AEST 21 June 2013 on payment of a late fee of $65 in addition
to the registration fee.
There are a number of UMAT preparation courses offered, none of which are
promoted by the universities which accept UMAT. One of which is MedEntry.
Funded Certificate III in Fitness in the ACT - The Australian Institute of
Personal Trainers has been awarded PSP Funding by the ACT Government to deliver
Certificate III in Fitness. Participants pay only a $400 administration fee with the
balance paid for by the ACT Government.
This funding is aimed at equity groups who are unemployed and
underemployed and aged between 17-24 years of age. The funding is also
available to existing workers. Face to face courses are being run in Canberra
throughout 2013 but the funding is limited to only 50 places. For more information

Scholarships and Cadetships
University of Technology Sydney Bachelor of Information Technology Cooperative Scholarship Program
Round one applications are due Friday 21 June. Round two applications open
Thursday 1 August and close on Thursday 30 September.
The program offers students $16,000 during each year of their studies and will
undertake two six month full-time industry placements. The course has a 100%
employment rate for its graduates.

Engineering & Technology Cadetships
Applications are now open for the 2013 Engineering & Technology Cadetships
(ETCAD) Program run by Professional Cadetships Australia (PCA).
Engineering Cadets will combine work within the Naval Marine business of RollsRoyce Australia with university study in Sydney in mechanical engineering, electrical
engineering or naval architecture. Alternatively, cadets may choose a flexible entry
engineering degree.
Technology Cadets will combine work at the Westpac Group in Sydney city with
university study in computer science, information technology or information
systems. Alternatively, cadets may undertake a commerce or arts degree and select
information systems as one of their majors. Technology Cadets will be well-placed to
pursue a career in ICT and/or business.

The Australia Institute’s National Youth Writing Competition
Entries due by Fri 17th May, 5pm.
People aged 17-25 are invited to write a 1000 word opinion article about which
government policy they would change. The winning entry will be sent to all Federal
MPs, Senators and The Australia Institute members, and the writer will be awarded a

On April 29, Bond University opened its popular annual short film

Film and Television Awards are recognised as one of the richest competitions of its
kind in Australia.
Future Leaders Writing Prize
The Future Leaders Writing Prize recognises and rewards talented young writers.
Year 11 and 12 students in Australian secondary schools are invited to submit writing
(fiction or non-fiction on any topic, 800 to 1,000 words).
The winner will receive $1,000 and have their writing published. Submissions are
due electronically in a word document by 1 July 2013 to: helen@futureleaders.com.au
