ADF Gap Year
Successful Air Force Gap Year candidates will be enlisted in the Aviation Support Technician mustering as trainees. Upon
successful completion of recruit training at No.1 Recruit Training Unit and Aerospace Technical Trade Core Skills Course at
the RAAF School of Technical Training, RAAF Base Wagga, trainees will be regraded to Aircraftman/Aircraftwoman Aviation
Support Technician (Gap Year). At this point AC/ACWs will undertake aircraft type specific training, followed by aircraft
maintenance duties for approximately 7 months at one of the major air bases to consolidate their training.
Aviation Support Technician (Gap Year) personnel, will augment Permanent Air Force aircraft and avionics technical trades
supporting the ongoing maintenance of aircraft and airframe systems at either flightline or workshop level. They will
undertake a range of tasks including but not limited to aircraft ground handling, operating ground support equipment,
replenishments, towing, marshalling, washing, launching aircraft and fly away kit maintenance.
Aviation Support Technician (Gap Year) personnel will work in varied environments, often working outdoors in all weather
conditions and be exposed to aircraft, machinery and equipment noise and vibration. Where possible, work is performed in
shelters, hangars or workshops that offer protection from inclement weather. Workshops may be of the open structure or
climate controlled type. Work may be outside normal working hours and include shift work.
Annual Activities
During the Aviation Support Technician (Gap Year) program, personnel will be required to complete the following
activities:
• physical fitness training and testing;
• continuation training consisting of ethics, workplace behaviour, WHS, security and weapons; and
• any other training deemed necessary

Upon completion of the Gap Year program, participants will be able to pursue several employment opportunities. The mix
of offers will be based on:
• Technical workforce shortfalls,
• Mix/blend required in the technical workforce,
• Permanent Air Force shortfalls, and
• Participant capacity/propensity to serve post Gap Year.
Pay & Allowances
ADF Gap Year
Salary while undertaking Military (Recruit) Training: $1,379 per fortnight ($35,854 per year).*
While under training, you will also receive $388 per fortnight ($10,086 per year pro rata)* Trainee Allowance.
Upon successful completion of recruit training, trainees (gap year) will commence technical Initial Employment Training
(IET). During this phase of training, trainees will be entitled to a salary of $1,576 per fortnight ($40,976 per year).*
While completing employment training, you will also receive $388 per fortnight ($10,086 per year pro rata)* Trainee
Allowance.
Successfully graduated trainees will be remustered to Aviation Support Technician (Gap Year). Aviation Support Technician
personnel (Gap Year) will be awarded the rank of Aircraftman/Aircraftwoman with salary being remunerated at a rate of
$48,029 per annum (pay grade 2).
AC/ACW Aviation Support Technician (Gap Year) personnel will also be entitled to service allowance at a rate of $13,448
per annum.*

General Requirements
Age Requirement
Air Force Gap Year applicants must be aged between 18-24 years old as of 7 April 2017.
Citizenship Requirement
Only Australian citizens are permitted to serve in the ADFGY Air Force program. More information on citizenship requirements is available from the Recruitment Centre and your local Defence Force
Recruiting Centre.
Security Requirement
The Department of Defence requires ADF employees to have security clearances appropriate to their employment.
A process of background checks, collection of relevant information and, as required, interviews, enables the Australian
Government Security Vetting Agency to make an informed assessment of an applicant's suitability for a security clearance.
The minimum security clearance level required is Negative Vetting Level 1, and current policy requires applicants to have a
checkable background for the previous 10 years. Required information includes:
- Residence
- Employment
- Education
- Credit
Aptitude Requirement
The application process to join the Australian Defence Force requires you to complete a series of aptitude tests including
verbal, spatial and numerical ability and a general maths test. Some jobs may also require you to complete additional
testing at a later date.
Psychology support staff will explain what is involved with each test.
The aptitude tests provide information about your suitability for the Defence Force and for particular jobs. Defence Force

Education & Experience
ADF Gap Year
You must have completed Year 12 level of secondary education. Additionally you must have Year 10 passes in Maths,
English and Science
Medical & Fitness Requirements
ADF Gap Year
To be accepted in the ADFGY Air Force program, you must be medically and physically fit for entry to the program. This is
partially assessed from the completion of an extensive questionnaire covering your medical history, followed by a physical
examination. You will also be required to successfully pass a physical fitness test before enlistment.

Period of Service
ADF Gap Year
The ADFGY program is a fully sponsored program of up to 12 months service. After successful completion of this program,
personnel may have further opportunities within the ADF as a reserve or permanent member depending on capability
requirements and available vacancies.
Failure Management/Termination of Contracts
Candidates can terminate their contract at any stage during the program with 21 days notice. Should
personnel fail to complete military or employment training, options for further service and training will all be considered on
a case by case basis.
Additional Requirements
Entry Requirement
Current or former serving military personnel (ADF or foreign service) are not eligible for Gap Year.
Special Requirement
Candidates will need to hold a manual Drivers License (P1 or P2), during phase 2 of their training. The holder of the licence
must be free of traffic infringements that may cause future cancellation or suspension of the licence.
Military Training
ADF Gap Year
The Recruit Course for ADFGY Air Force is approximately a 12 week course at No 1 Recruit Training Unit (1RTU) which is
located at RAAF Base Wagga in NSW. For more details on recruit training, refer to the Joining instructions. These instructions will provide you and your family
with enough information to arrange your personal affairs before enlistment in the Air Force, and give you an idea of what
you will be doing on the recruit course.
Employment Training
ADF Gap Year
Upon successful completion of recruit training, ADFGY Air Force program personnel will proceed to the RAAF School of
Technical Training RAAF Base Wagga for the 2nd phase of training (IET). This training is approximately a 10 week course.
Further Training
ADF Gap Year
Upon successful completion of IET Aviation Support Technician personnel will then undertake aircraft maintenance duties in
the Aviation Support Technician mustering for approximately 7 months at any of the major operational air bases to
consolidate their training.
Employment Location
ADF Gap Year

air bases including RAAF Bases Amberley in QLD, RAAF Bases Darwin or Tindal in NT, RAAF Bases Williamtown or
