ELECTRICAL ENGINEER III
DEFINITION
To provide professional engineering expertise to the electrical maintenance, repair, installation and
service operations of the City; and to respond to citizen complaints.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Electrical Engineer III is an advanced level class in the Electrical Engineer series. Incumbents
perform a variety of professional electrical engineering duties involving the maintenance, repair,
installation and service of electrical systems. Duties include designing layouts for traffic signal,
street, building and facility lighting systems. Incumbents are expected to use professional and
independent judgement and skill in the performance of assignments which are subject to review by
professional superiors. This class differs from the Electrical Engineer II in that incumbents of the
latter perform assignments of a less complex nature within a framework of established procedures.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from the Electrical Engineering Supervisor.
May provide lead direction to assigned staff.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Design layouts for the City's traffic signal, street lighting systems, and light and power systems in
municipal buildings and facilities.
Operate a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties.
Prepare cost estimates and writes specifications.
Prepare plans and specifications for electrical construction projects.
Review the preliminary and final design plans for the City's electrical systems from consultants to
insure compliance with contract specifications.
Serve as project engineer for electrical construction projects; review work of consultants and
outside contractors.
Assist in the planning, development, implementation and monitoring of electrical engineering

procedures and standards, and a work control system.
Perform surveys and studies.
Respond to citizen requests for information.
Review the scope of electrical work for scheduled and unscheduled projects; provide estimated time
line for plans and specifications.
Prepare reports of a technical or complex nature.
Assist in preparation of division budget.
Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of electrical engineering.
Electrical laws, codes and regulations.
Electrical equipment and materials; field measuring and testing equipment.
Principles of supervision, training and evaluation.
Training methods and practices.
Safety principles, practices, and procedures.
Principles of job analysis, scheduling, budget estimates of engineering work.
Electrical plan checks.
Preparation of complex technical reports.
Cost estimating of materials and personnel.
Systems and application.
Ability to:
Plan, organize, direct and evaluate the design of electrical projects.
Review complex engineering calculations; drawings, specifications, contracts and reports.
Analyze complex technical problems, determine solutions and make sound decisions.

Promote and enforce safe work practices.
Interpret and apply law, regulations and codes.
Coordinate functions and activities between departments and outside agencies.
Prepare project budgets.
Prepare and analyze complex reports of a general or technical nature.
Learn departmental computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet and
autocad software.
Communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance
of required duties.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge
and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Four years of professional experience as an electrical engineer involving the design and
installation of electrical systems.
Education:
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in electrical or mechanical
engineering or related field.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE
Successful incumbents in this position are expected to operate automotive vehicles in the
performance of assigned duties. Due to the nature of the assignment and the hours worked, public
transportation may not be a cost effective or efficient method for traveling to the various locations
required. Individuals who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid
California Driver's License throughout the tenure of employment OR demonstrate the ability to
travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties.
Certification as a Registered Professional Electrical Engineer is required.
