Marvell 88EM8080/88EM8081
Digital Flyback PFC Controller For LED Lighting Applications
PRODUCT OVERVIEW
The Marvell® 88EM8080/88EM8081 is a high performance, low-cost, minimum component count controller for single
stage Flyback LED lighting applications. The single-stage Flyback PFC LED controllers can be used for a wide variety of
solid state lighting applications with output power ranges up to 150W.
The 88EM8080/88EM8081 includes the Marvell patented adaptive control-loop design to achieve a power factor up
to 0.99 and the lowest Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) in the industry, enabling a wide range of voltage and load
conditions for more reliable and robust LED lighting systems.
Unlike traditional analog PFC based solutions, the 88EM8080/88EM8081 utilizes Marvell’s innovative Digital Signal
Processing (DSP) solution improving the steady state and transient performance. This offers customers the smallest
package and lowest system bill of materials (BOM). The combination of the adaptive control loop design built on top of
the DSP solution elevates industry standards for PFC controllers.
Both devices work at fixed frequencies, 88EM8080 at 60kHz while 88EM8081 at 120kHz. The IC operates under
Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM) or Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) or both combined together operating
in Mixed Mode. The internal voltage loop compensation and current loop control guarantee system stability and thus
reduce the external component count and costs.
The 8-pin SOIC package further facilitates the application design process, saving board space. The resultant simple
system design and minimum cost makes 88EM8080/88EM8081 the ideal choice for single stage LED lighting applications.
