Abstract
Today, the availability of fuel oil is increasingly limited
and combustion results have impact on pollution of the
environment. Then, all efforts to save fuel consumption and the
green energy utilization of should be continued. One example of
energy savings is utilizing HHO Gas (Brown’s Gas) in Internal
Combustion Engine (ICE). This research that was conducted with
direct connections, temperatures reached more than 90oC cause
the HHO Generator to be leak and damaged. If temperature
continues to rise, then resulting HHO gas will mix with water
vapor. Therefore, developed HHO Generator with addition PWM
(Pulse Width Modulation) as control device for value a current,
frequency, and duty cycle. Thus, the research needs improvement
about the characteristic and performance of the HHO Generators
for get the best optimization.
In this research, the development of Generator HHO using
dry cell and wet cell. Testing of both Generators with adding
PWM E-3 Fixed Frequency (1 kHz) and variations testing of duty
cycle : 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and direct connection. Generator
configuration is stainless steel 316L electrodes using 15 plate
with dimensions 80 x 80 mm. Testing of performed in the
Combustion Fuels and Engineering of Laboratory - Mechanical
Engineering ITS. Characteristics of performance is currents,
power consumption, fluid temperature, mass flowrate of HHO gas
production, and efficiency.

From the results of this experiments, characteristics
obtained is a good performance on both types of generators with
addition PWM. Compared with direct connection, value current
and voltage is more stable. But current tends to increase with
rising temperature up to 70oC. Smallest current on dry type with
20% duty cycle is 5,4 Ampere. Largest power consumption on wet
type with 80% duty cycle is 301,8 Watt. Largest mass flowrate on
wet type with 80% duty cycle is 3,51x10-6 kg/. And best efficiency
generator on wet type with 80% duty cycle is 27,7%.
