That’s not to say that your Chamber hasn’t been busy following proposed legislation, weighing in on issues on behalf of our members to make sure our voice is heard at the Statehouse, connecting members with one another at various events throughout Newport County and more. Of particular importance to the business and residential community is the issue of tolls on the Sakonnet River Bridge. In response to the outcry from many of our members, the Chamber board voted recently on a resolution to support Senate Bill 242, proposed by Senator Lou DiPalma, to freeze tolls on the Newport Pell Bridge as well as prohibit tolls on the Sakonnet, Mt. Hope and Jamestown Verrazano Bridges. We are following this discussion very closely. In other news, we were asked by Jane Howington, City Manager of Newport, to create a business advisory council to work with city officials including the Newport Police Department. The driving force of this council is to help ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for our residents and visitors. It has proven to be beneficial already as a way to foster better communication between the various stakeholders. Keep an eye out this summer for ‘on the street’ ambassadors who will be available to answer questions and offer guidance to our 2 U WWW.NEWPORTCHAMBER.COM SPRING 2013 visitors. They are sure to be a positive addition to the visitor experience. Last spring we embarked upon an important initiative to bring together representatives from each of the communities in Newport County to create an economic development strategy and execution plan to benefit the entire County. As a result of two strategy sessions and a full day planning session, we are now in discussions with key contributors to fund this initiative in order to launch it effectively. We will keep you posted on our progress. Finally, as I conclude my term as chair of the board, I want to take this opportunity to thank my fellow board members and Chamber staff for their support and contributions during the past 12 months. We have a great team in place that is committed to making Newport County the best place to live, work and play. As Chamber members, you are in good hands with our new chair, Laura DaLomba, as she and her executive team work together with the full board on current initiatives already in process as well as on developing new programs to fulfill your needs and those of our community. Naval Station Newport is host to many commands including the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Newport Division, the U.S. Naval War College, the Surface Warfare Officer School Command, and the Officer Training Command. Quonset is the home of the 143rd Airlift Wing of the RI Air National Guard and the 126th Aviation Regiment of the RI Army National Guard. The Rhode Island defense industry employs over 12,000 people with an annual payroll of $700M and generates over $1.75 billion in annual revenue. Aquidneck Island has the largest cluster of defense-related companies in the state. There is also additional impact on Rhode Island as a result of the economic multiplier effect. This includes spinoff economic generation related to the defense activities and companies and their employees supporting non-defense RI companies and the RI hospitality industry. The United States Navy’s Undersea Warfare Center -Newport Division, with annual revenue of just under $1 billion, is the driving engine for many of the RI defense companies. The Warfare Center contracts out just under 50% of its annual revenue and 60% of that is to defense companies in southern New England. As the Navy’s premier research, development, test and evaluation engineering and Navy fleet support center for submarine warfare systems and other systems associated with the undersea battlespace, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center is charged with meeting the undersea warfare requirements of the 21st century. R.I. defense companies do a variety of work for the Department of Defense including designing and building platforms and providing equipment, supplies, and technical services in direct and indirect support of the Department of Defense. Specific to the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, many companies provide direct support to Navy fleet units and their operations. The RI defense industry also has significant involvement in research related to future defense needs and often is the developer of cost effective and innovative solutions to meet those needs. The RI defense industry is supported by our highly educated technology workforce, the RI geography with the Atlantic Ocean and Narragansett Bay, a unique deep water estuary, and our partnerships with RI’s oceanographic and ocean engineering sectors. The Southeastern New England Defense Industry Alliance (SENEDIA) is an alliance of defense related businesses and organizations. Most of SENEDIA’s members are from Rhode Island, but also include companies from southeastern Massachusetts and the Groton region of Connecticut. Members include Newport County Chamber of Commerce, SEA Corp, Rite-Solutions, McLaughlin Research Corporation, General Dynamics-Electric Boat, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems, and BAE Systems, among others. SENEDIA champions, preserves, and protects the interests of the defense and technology industry. The alliance creates a common focus on the industry; monitors and analyzes the industry’s impact on local communities; provides tailored information related to the defense and technology industry; informs local, state, and national decision makers on critical issues with proposed solutions; cultivates relationships with complementary organizations; and protects and develops a prepared and educated technology workforce. Like most Americans, SENEDIA recognizes the fiscal pressures our nation is under and understands that long term reductions to the defense budget need to be made. SENEDIA also believes a more thoughtful, deliberate budget solution is necessary to achieve those long-term goals and avoid the damaging, reactionary ‘whiplash’ measures which the recent sequestration action has caused. All Rhode Islanders must understand the need to support and protect our defense industry. This is even more important given the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) legislation in the 2014 Department of Defense budget. The RI defense industry is very important. It sustains an educated technology workforce and is a critical economic engine for Rhode Island’s economy. Most importantly, the RI defense industry plays a pivotal role in maintaining America’s national security. Molly Donohue Magee is the Executive Director of the Southeastern New England Defense Industry Alliance (SENEDIA), which is based in Middletown, RI. Annual Chamber Golf Tournament Golf Networking Builds Business The cool breezes from Narragansett Bay surround you while playing golf at Montaup Country Club. As you address your ball at the tee box, members of your group watch in anticipation, will you succeed or fail? They are not necessarily concerned with your golf score but with your next business project outcome. Golf is the fastest growing sport in the world. It is also known that more business deals are now closed on the golf course than in any boardroom. The peaceful setting provides ample opportunities for people to get to know one another on a more personal level and develop deeper relations. It’s no wonder the golf course is a popular networking with colleagues and business partners. It’s essential to remember that although golf is a fun and a more casual way to connect with co-workers and clients, your time on the course still qualifies as a business meeting. How you conduct yourself on the course says a lot about your company. Golf is an excellent networking tool when engaged properly: Know whom to invite. Make sure you know the expertise and expectations of those you’re golfing with. Organize your game and your attitude around that of your golf partners. How you handle yourself can greatly impact business. Respect the rules. Remember that as you get to see your clients in a more social environment, they also get to see you. Be on your best behavior as everything you say and do reflect your professionalism and integrity. Talk business. Don’t discuss business before the 5th hole or after the 15th. This gives everyone a chance to relax and get into the game. Complete the match with everyone’s focus on the game. A worthy finish will help confirm business on the 19th hole. Avoid excessive alcohol. It will not help your game and can lead to some uncomfortable moments. This is an opportunity for you to increase your professional image and improve your relationship. You need all of your faculties about you. Know how to play ready golf. Most golfers are willing to play with just about anyone regardless of their skill level, as Economic Update Breakfast In 2011, Gov. Chafee created the Exchange to ensure RI Small businesses and consumers affordable health insurance. The Exchange has been dedicated to making it easier for employers and their employees to get comparisons from health insurance companies allowing them to make clearer and more affordable choices. The Exchange is scheduled to be operational in the fall 2013. The Newport County Chamber of Commerce will be hosting an Economic Update on the Health Exchange on June 11th from 10:00 – 12:00 a.m. at the Ramada Inn, East Main Road, Middle- town. This event will allow the chance for Chamber members to discover what the Exchange means to them and their employees. The Economic Update will consist of a panel of experts associated with the developing Exchange. Currently the panel includes Christine C. Ferguson - Director of the Rhode Island Health Benefits Exchange, Jeff Rich - CEO of Health Services Administrators, and Dr. G Alan Kurose, MD, F.A.C.P, Coastal Medical, President. For more information about this event or to register please visit www. NewportChamber.com or Call Jane Roggero at 401847-1608. long as they don’t waste time on the course. When it’s your turn, play! Play the best golf you’re capable of. Allowing the customer to win by missing some obvious shots is insulting and can have disastrous consequences. Use the handicap system to even the competition. Play to the 20th hole. To make sure you get the maximum out of your golf networking experience, make sure you follow up with a card or call within 48 hours. Golf is a powerful contributor to relationship building, but will rarely create immediate results. Put these suggestions and your golf skills to test on May 13th at Montaup Country Club at the Newport County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Golf Tournament. The event will begin at 11:45 a.m. with lunch. Followed by 18-holes of enjoyable golf while networking with other Newport County Professionals, finish day with a social event including dinner, raffles and prizes. For more information call the Chamber staff at 401-847-1608. Combine business networking with a healthy dose of competition! A great way to entertain clients and customers.
