What Causes an Arc Flash?
• An average of 4,000 non-disabling
and 3,600 disabling electrical
contact injuries occur annually in
the U.S
An arc flash is the radiant energy and
blinding light created by an electric
arc passing through air between conductors. Arc temperature can reach
35,000°F, burning skin and igniting
clothing at a distance. Some of the
major causes of arc flash are using an
inappropriate test meter, dropping of
tools inside energized equipment, and
insulation failure. There are approximately six to seven arc flashes every
day in the United States alone. A recent study found that an estimated one
person dies every day from arc flash.
Other hazards to be aware of include
the thermo-acoustic shock wave,
molten metal, and shrapnel. A partially
protected worker could endure severe
injuries. It is very important to follow
the guidelines of the standard. Your local OSHA field representative will have
more information.
• One person is electrocuted in the
workplace every day from Arc Flash
• Electrocutions are the fourth leading
cause of traumatic occupational
fatalities
• Over 2,000 workers are sent to
burn centers each year with electrical burns
• Up to 80% of all electrical injuries

NFPA 70E addresses electrical safety
requirements for employee workplaces that are necessary for the practical safeguarding of employees in
their pursuit of gainful employment.
The NFPA 70E Standard for Electrical
Safety in the Workplace is designed
to identify electrical hazards and how
to deal with them. The Standard describes safety-related work practices
and maintenance requirements to help
in developing an electrical safety program to protect employees from the
hazards of electrical shock and arc
flash. To establish an electrical safety
work program, a hazard assessment
must be performed to identify potential hazards and the degree of protection required to safeguard employees.

2. Use an industry-accepted software
to perform the hazard assessment

the Hazard Risk Category (HRC) for
certain job tasks will be identified.

and thorns can’t penetrate them either. The superior puncture proofness in tandem with the

with snaps simplify length adjustment. Heavy duty non-corrosive, 14-inch zippers on the

B. Seahorse™ Type V Fall Vest
Type V fall vest w/slot in the back facilitates wearing a fall restraint harness. Arrangement allows the snap hook and lanyard to be worn comfortably outside of the life jacket. Durable components are used to insure a long life of service. Flexible Ensolite® foam flotation pads cover
a minimum body area to increase ventilation and promote freedom of movement. Closed-cell
flotation foam will not absorb water if cut or punctured. Tough, flexible vinyl coating resists
caustics, acids, UV light, hydrocarbons, mildew, fading, drilling mud, tears and abrasions and
is easy to clean with soap and water. Webbing system is designed to take strains and loads.
Innovative chest strap helps to hold the vest on the wearer during falls into the water and
prevents the vest from riding up too high. Plastic buckles designed to not accidentally come
undone or become a snag hazard. Buoyancy of the vest is greater than the USCG minimum.
The bright international orange coating passes UL flame test UL1123. The life jacket can be
adjusted to fit most adults (up to 56” chest). USCG Approval 160/053/88/0.
