company growth with part quality and precision
Gary Mardiros of A&A Industries in Peabody, MA., believes that by using technology and intelligent machines, they can gain machining productivity and ultimately
more work for their company. To do this they replaced their 3 and 4-axis machining
centers with 5-axis DMG equipment that has allowed the company to grow with
new customers.
In order to increase the company’s machining capabilities, Mardiros
bought DMG’s DMU 340 and the DMC 200 U. They advanced in technology by
adding the DMU 200 P and the DMF 360. Gary says, "Since the initial purchase of the
machines, we’ve really been able to buy DMG equipment just by the manufacturers’
specification, because we know what we’re getting. We trust DMG."
Within a few more years, they bought DMG’s HSC 105. "We were phasing
out a lot of equipment, so we wanted to replace existing capacity with new technology. We already had a lot of experience with DMG and we were happy with the
brand and the company. So we decided to explore what they had, and we also looked
at what the competition had. By this time, we had four other DMGs on the floor, so
we knew the quality of the machine we were going to get."
Mardiros says DMG’s HSC 105 linear 5-axis Machining Center gives them
the precision and accuracy they need for parts. "It’s a very well packaged machine
that is easy to work on and can machine relatively large parts. Part quality has also
increased with the 5-axis equipment," says Mardiros. "With the capability of the
B-axis on the HSC 105, we found that the cutting conditions have become a lot more
rigid than previously experienced with machines that had nutating heads. The design of the HSC 105 gives us better cutting conditions, higher precision and meets
the demanding quality requirements of our customers."

The region of eastern Westphalia is internationally renowned as a stronghold
for mechanical engineering. However, it might come as a surprise that it pays
to use solar power in this region as well. Bürener Maschinenfabrik GmbH set
out to prove that point a little over a year ago. As a specialist for conveyor technology, filter and processing systems, as well as for plastic parts, the company
installed six SunCarrier systems in December of 2007, in a period of only seven
weeks. On the cut-off date at the end of 2008, already 205,000 kWh of electrical
power had been generated by the sun and fed into the company’s power supply.
This is the statistical equivalent of the average energy consumption of more
than fifty 3-person households. In view of federally guaranteed purchase prices
for electrical power generated by the sun, the SunCarrier investment by Bürener
will have paid for itself in 10 years at the latest. And the feeling of having helped
the environment is an added bonus that comes free of charge.

Optimizing the machining time
with AFC
Manual adjustments to the feed rate,
such as by using the override pot, have
always been possible with HEIDENHAIN
contouring controls. But this always
depends on the experience and, of
course, the presence of the operator.
Adaptive feed control (AFC) automatically regulates the feed rate of the
iTNC 530, taking into consideration
the respective spindle power and other
process data.
