CSJ Newsline for the friends of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Albany Province Winter 2008 Volume 25, Number 1 Students at Carondelet Music Center Make Their Own Kind of Music By Patricia St. John, CSJ, Ed.D A s 8 year-old Katie sat in her Group Piano Class at Carondelet Music Center, she looked with amazement at the digital piano as it responded to her musical-play like an old-fashioned player piano. The difference here is that the interactive software linked to the digital piano through a computer is like a virtual musician mirroring Katie’s competence and skill level; it is not a predetermined “piano roll.” “I’m making my own music!” she exclaimed. In July of 2006, I was invited to present a research paper at the International Society of Music Education/Early Childhood Commission’s biennial meeting in Taipei, Taiwan. There I met another presenter, Anna-Rita Addessi, a music professor from the University of Bologna in Italy. Our research interests intersected on two levels: first with flow, defined as a psychological state calling forth high skill and high challenge and resulting in optimal experience, and second with early childhood music-making. Later that summer, our paths would cross again as each of us represented our work on a five-member symposium focusing on flow experience in music at the International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition in Bologna. Anna-Rita Addessi and Sister Patricia at The International Conference on Music Perception and Cognition in Bologna, Italy (August, 2006) and the beautiful porticos of Bologna. Those two connections led to an international exchange that will result in another research project involving students from Bologna, Italy and students from Carondelet Music Center. The “virtual musician” is a music machine of sorts, named the Continuator. Addessi is currently conducting a study that examines the Continuator’s influence on musical improvisation with children from an Italian music school. I will replicate the study here in the US (at CMC) and we will collaborate later in the Spring on our findings. The interactive software, not yet released publicly, responds in-the-moment to the keyboard player’s musical thought, continuously augmenting and expanding the material. The Continuator, the software of which is loaded into a computer, consists of one MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface—in effect, computer generated instrumental sounds) input typically from a synthesizer and one MIDI output typically returning to the same synthesizer. (Continued on page 2) (Cont. from page 1, making their own music) In collaboration with her colleague, François Pachet, from SONY Computer Science Laboratory in Paris, Anna-Rita has developed and refined the Continuator’s use in children’s music-making. Together, François and Anna-Rita have found that the many features of the interactive system which were exciting for professional musicians—the organic capacity of the system to learn musical styles previously unknown and its ability to respond in real time—proved just as exciting for non-musicians and young children. The researchers explain that the main lesson learned from their experiments is that “…it is worthwhile to design and use a particular class of interactive systems for music education” (Pachet & Addessi, 2004, p. 2). This is where the Music Center comes in! Celebrating our symposium’s success with a lovely dinner in Bologna, Addessi, Pachet, and I discussed the many-faceted possibilities inherent in this musical tool. They sent me a copy of the software to use at Carondelet Music Center as an experiment with older children. Addessi’s studies have involved 3.5 to 5-year-olds. While I strongly believe that music literacy is important, I wondered how the interaction might work with students who already had one or two years of conventional piano study and how the Continuator might develop improvisational skills, enabling the learner to make music spontaneously. I think this is where piano lessons are boring as students get stuck in those obnoxious 5-finger ditties that don’t sound anything like real music—and they know it! The music material needs to be authentic and meaningful if children are going to stay engaged and motivated. With the Continuator, students can make their own music and learn about music simultaneously through their own creations. Additionally, as I learned more about the interactive potential, I realized that this type of play was a form of self-scaffolding, another topic intimately related to my own research, where the learner finds what is most needed next to facilitate his/her own learning to move beyond imitation and modeling to a new level of competence. In this way, students are actively involved in their own knowledge construction—piano study in this case—through problem-solving and problem-finding, i.e., finding out what happens if alternate solutions are employed and asking what if… This is what learning looks like as students engage in problem-finding, discovering answers to what if as they spontaneously make their own music, carefully listening to each other’s AND the Continuator’s feedback. The most important aspect of the Continuator is that the musical material that is generated always conforms stylistically to the input. It plays like you! That is, the style created by the system retains melodic patterns, harmonic progressions, dynamics, and, to a lesser extent, rhythmic patterns of the student used for learning. It engages in an infinite dialog with you and immediately stops if you interrupt its response; your own creative response is not delayed or ignored. As the playing continues, the conversation becomes more and more interesting because the Continuator keeps on learning from whatever input it gets AND the learner generates ideas from that response. This dynamic self-propelling learning cycle creates intrinsic motivation and generates optimal enjoyment. (Continued on page 3) 2 CSJ Newsline Winter 2008 (Cont. from page 2, making their own music) As students collaborate together, they discover solutions to musical problems and try out each other's ideas. The results are often far greater than what each contribute individually. The Continuator enables them to be free from the printed musical score. By fine-tuning our budget and shifting funds away from some categories and into “equipment” (commonly known as robbing Peter to pay Paul), I purchased two new computers for the Piano Lab, which already is home to six digital pianos, one teacher console, and a Group Educator Control system (funded through a grant from The J.M. McDonald Foundation) that links all the keyboards to the teacher station. All the pianos have head phones, so students can practice individually without disturbing one another. Additionally, through the teacher console and my own head phones, I can “drop in” to listen to individual students as they work independently. Eventually we’ll need to upgrade our lab and install a computer station for each digital piano (estimated at $50,000). We’ll keep dreaming on that and put it on our wish list! I have been fortunate to have the technical assistance of Rick Nardone, the parent of one of our piano students who will be part of the study. Together, we will have our experiment well underway for the Spring semester. Addessi has promised to travel from Italy to visit our Center in the Spring as well and, she and Pachet have invited me to contribute to a forthcoming book on the Continuator. These are exciting days for Carondelet Music Center. Fostering this kind of creativity and developing a life-long love for active musicmaking is central to CMC’s mission. I am thrilled that my work as music researcher and music educator can be so mutually informative, and that our students at Carondelet Music Center can benefit from all of it! Sister Jeanne Marie Gocha (third from right) made her profession of final vows as a Sister of St. Joseph on Saturday, October 13, 2007. Shown as official witnesses are Sisters Kay Ryan, Ranah Phelan and Mary Anne Rodgers. Sister Jeanne Marie was joined in the awesome celebration of profession by over 300 family members, friends and Sisters of St. Joseph. In the ritual for profession, Jeanne Marie made perpetual vows of chastity, poverty and obedience according to the Constitution of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. As part of our community tradition, Jeanne Marie’s vow formula included an expression of her intention to grow in humility and love characteristic of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Winter 2008 CSJ Newsline 3 CSJ Newsline FROM THE PROVINCE DIRECTOR Winter 2008 Volume 25 Number 1 Dear Friends, Happy New Year!! I take this opportunity to wish you blessings for the New Year from the Sisters and Associates in the Albany Province. This is a special year for the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, Albany Province. We are 150 years young!! In celebration of this legacy and the calling that we have received we are gathering throughout the year to pray and rejoice with many. q When we arrived 150 years ago, Oswego was part of the Albany Diocese and we were welcomed in April 1858 with a blizzard. In October, we again gathered in Oswego for a liturgy of gratitude. The parishioners of St. Mary’s were most gracious in providing a reception and welcoming us and our guests. q Many of us were able to enjoy the wonderful Christmas Celebration with Tim Janis. The chapel was full! And through the generosity of those present over $2,000 was gathered for our sisters in Peru as they respond to the needs of the people recovering from the earthquake. We are most grateful for the John, Marie and Joseph Whalen Foundation for their support of this event. q We will be celebrating a 2:00 PM Mass of Thanksgiving on April 13, 2008 in the Province House chapel. We look forward to gathering with our family and friends for the special day. One year ago, we opened Carondelet Hospitality Center. We have been so blessed by the groups and individuals using our home for their meetings and workshops. Our guests are greeted by the warm hospitality of the sisters who live at the Provincial House and the careful preparation of the space through the work of many of our staff. We also continue to explore the option of providing senior housing with services. I know it seems as if we have been saying this for years (and we have!). However, I hope you know we continue to meet with Alchester Development, Inc., our architects and the Town of Colonie. It is our hope that all of our preparation will unfold into a wonderful opportunity for our neighbors. We have begun the process of nominating and selecting our next Province Leadership Team. Our selections will be in April and the new team will begin their five year term in August. We would appreciate your remembrance of this in prayer. And most importantly, thank you for your generosity to us. You can see from this report how your contributions to our All Souls Day and St. Joseph’s Day appeals, your gifts at Christmas and the use of our cards, as well as your support at our Ziti Dinner and Golf Tournament are important to us. Your generosity enables us to provide for the care of our retired sisters, the maintenance of our home and our ongoing desire to serve others in response to the Gospel. We are most grateful for your support and prayer for us. Blessings, Sister Kay Ryan, CSJ Sisters in Syracuse got together to “Ring in the New Year.” Shown standing are Sisters Maureen Murphy who is lighting candles for the prayer service and Diane Zigo who did a reading. 4 CSJ Newsline CSJ Newsline is published three times a year by the Albany Province of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet for our families and friends. In the last Newsline there was an article by Mike Byrne that spoke of his Aunt, Sister Mary Assissium. This stirred the memories of another donor and friend, Kathleen Gallagher Brearton. Kathleen remembered Sister Mary Assissium as the kindergarten teacher at St. Joseph’s, South Troy, when she herself was in the 4th or 5th grade. Kathleen also sent me a copy of a cherished picture (on the left) of her aunt with her girlfriends. Her aunt is in the center of the first row with a bow in her hair. Her aunt became a Sister of St. Joseph and was named Sister Mary Denis. She entered the community in 1905 and made her first profession in 1908. She died in 1943 while serving at St. Bernard’s, Cohoes. Kathleen said she doesn’t know the names of the other women in the photo but she recalls being told one or more of them also entered the convent becoming Sisters of St. Joseph. This year we celebrate our 150th anniversary of coming to New York State. When Sister Mary Denis entered, the CSJ community in NYS was less than 50 years old. My curiosity was aroused and I decided to investigate. It first struck me how much time elapsed since 1905 and how things have changed. Our archive department was able to tell me that Sister Mary Sheila O’Hara (who at that time taught 7th grade) lived with Sister in the early 1940’s. I went to listen to Sister Sheila share with me what she recalled. It seems right before Sister Sheila came to Cohoes there was a fire in the convent so the Sisters lived on the top floor of the school. Sister Mary Denis was a tiny person, taught second grade, was very prayerful and trusted completely in God. Sister Sheila said there were 80 steps between where the Sisters ate in the kitchen and where they slept and that Sister Mary Denis had to continue on even further up more stairs to where she slept in a small alcove. This was referred to as her penthouse. Sister also shared with me how money was tight and when school got out on Friday afternoon the heat was turned off until early Monday morning when the building was heated for the children coming in. It was a bit harsh on the sisters during the winter but they just bore it knowing times were hard. I do admire people who endure hardships in order to be of service and think of the many sisters who have gone before us. Stories abound among our older sisters, who smile as they tell the experiences. Within the CSJ community there is also a booklet entitled the “Trek of the Seven.” Seven CSJ sisters crossed the western desert to get to Tucson, Arizona where they founded St. Mary’s Hospital. They endured the hot desert, Indian raids and all the discomforts that go with traveling in a covered wagon. In today’s society, especially here in the USA, our CSJ sisters for the most part do not experience physical hardships. Yet, we are travelers on the way. We are called, like our foremothers, to be passionate about the mission of Jesus. Recently each CSJ received a booklet containing the Acts of Chapter. When assembled, the “General Chapter” is the highest decision-making body of the congregation. This past summer representatives of our province were delegates at the 2007 Chapter held in St. Paul, Minnesota. It is the Chapter delegates who set the course for the CSJ community. The introduction to our 2007 Acts of Chapter states: St. Joseph followed the inspiration of God made known to him in dreams even when consequences caused him to reject the prevailing societal and religious norms of his times. Together in our sharing of the heart and in our conversations that touch deep within, we ponder the call of our Chapter to Deepening Communion: With creation, with/within the Church, with the Dear neighbor, and with Each Other. We are a religious community of women in 2008. We have the same spirit and passion that the women who entered the CSJ (Continued on page 6) Winter 2008 CSJ Newsline 5 (Continued from page 5) community at the beginning of the 20th century; the same spirit and passion as those who came to the USA in 1836; the same spirit and passion as our founding mothers of 1630. We can endure upsets and the unexpected when acting upon what we believe we are led by the Spirit to accomplish. Like Joseph, we are called to pay attention to inspirations. We thank you for your support in helping us to follow our dreams. May you too, follow inspirations of the Spirit – guaranteed surprises and great peace. Sincerely and with Blessings, Sister Carol A. Rohloff, CSJ The Sisters of St. Joseph pay tribute to the memory of our deceased benefactors listed below. We gratefully acknowledge their foresight in naming the Society of the Sisters of St. Joseph in their wills and other planned gifts, thus providing a way for us to continue our mission of service to God’s people. In 2000, St. Joseph’s Circle was created to recognize those who: • Are the living members of the “Father and Friends Society” in the 1960s and helped build St. Joseph’s Provincial House • Have made a lifetime gift of $5,000 or more to the Sisters of St. Joseph • Have notified the Sisters of St. Joseph that they have made arrangement for a planned gift to assist the Sisters of St. Joseph – through a remembrance in a will, making the sisters beneficiary of an insurance policy etc. The Society is named in honor of St. Joseph the Provider. The Sisters of St. Joseph wish to thank these partners in ministry and honor them in a special way. Each year in the fall of the year the members are invited to join the sisters in the Provincial House Chapel for liturgy and a brunch thereafter. This year on Sunday, October 14, fourteen new members were honored. Because of distance and/or health reasons, only two new members were physically able to be present. Each new member received a prayer card to St. Joseph the Provider and a pair of St. Joseph’s chaplet beads. CSJ Newsline 9 Annual Report FISCAL YEAR 2006-2007 Mission Statement of the Sisters of St. Joseph Called by God and passionate for the mission of Jesus, the Sisters of St. Joseph come together to serve all persons. With a distinctive spirit of hospitality and a particular concern for the poor, we witness to the gospel message by being a unifying and reconciling presence to a world in need. Resource Development People want to have purpose in their lives, in what they do. They like to know that their work has value, that it serves a greater function than what can usually be seen in the dayto-day efforts, that it contributes a significant service to humanity. Persons who have given their lives to Christian service must be able to associate their tasks with ultimate values. The Sisters of St. Joseph have committed their lives to the mission of the Gospel. That commitment implies a commitment to good stewardship of all the resources necessary to carry out that mission in the present and to transmit it to future generations. The Sisters of St. Joseph cannot carry out their works of the spiritual and corporal works of mercy without contributions of resources and services of others. The sisters have a responsibility to share that mission with others by providing occasions for people to exercise their Christian stewardship. The needs of the Sisters of St. Joseph become opportunities for others to contribute their gifts, their resources, for the expression of that mission and the ministries that express it. We continue to invite you to participate with us in our mission. These graphs represent numbers of sisters, not percentages. (Continued on page 11) 10 CSJ Newsline Winter 2008 Annual Report FISCAL YEAR 2006-2007 FINANCES INCOME Our Sisters’ earnings from ministries still provide our largest source of income; however, this source diminishes each year as our working sisters retire. Our second largest source of income is from monies received from the Sister M. Athanasia Gurry Trust. The Gurry Trust is a restricted fund to be used exclusively to meet the needs of our retired sisters. At this time the fund remains underfunded in light of our current and future retirement needs. Social Security income provides our third largest source of income at 11.1%. 6.5% of the total income is derived from gifts and donations. These gifts and donations continue to be an ever more important part of our support. EXPENSES Our largest expense category is sisters’ living expense, which equals 42.4% of total expenses. Our second largest expense is Health Care at 38.9%. This expense included the cost of professional health care, medication, health insurance premiums and salaries paid to our health care staff. Province Administration expenses at 12.4% include: the support of the Congregational Center, sisters’ continuing education, the formation program for our newest members in the Initial Personal Development program, support of Province offices, automobiles, insurance and funerals. Plant operation expenses account for 4.9% and include Social Security taxes, maintenance and repair of Province owned buildings and grounds (these buildings and grounds include not only the Provincial House but also Province owned properties consisting of four small houses surrounding our Latham property,) lay employees salaries and benefits for maintenance and housekeeping staff. Each sister who has coordinated what was to be offered in the store has shared something of herself in carrying out her ministry in this position. There has been a goodly amount of change that has taken place over the years. In April of 2007, I talked with Sister Mary Gibson about some gift and tote bags I made for the store. She was pleased with my work and asked if I would consider taking over the store from her. At the time, I was looking for a change in ministry so this seemed to be a message from God for me to give this some serious thought. Sister Mary encouraged me to pray about making this change and said we would talk some more. When I agreed to take over the store from Sister Mary, who showed some signs of not being able to work as she once did, I asked that she and I walk the path of my orientation and training together once the position was confirmed by the Province Leadership Team. Sister agreed. She would be there to help me on my way so and to support me. I planned to arrive at the Provincial House the first of June, 2007. When I arrived, Sister Mary was ill. She would say some days were pretty good while others were filled with pain and discomfort. We talked about what she wanted done for the shop and what could be made to keep the store stocked. Sister Mary examined each bit of work that was put in the shop to be sure it was well made and deserving to be labeled made by a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet. In mid June, Sister Mary celebrated her 90th birthday with some of the members of her family. She wasn’t feeling up to par but appeared to enjoy her company. About ten day later, Sister Mary was admitted to the hospital and died within the week. Mary Razewski, who visits Sister Mary Herman weekly, relaxes outside the distinctive Carondelet Shoppe. Hand made Christmas items were aplenty in the Shoppe to offer shoppers the opportunity to find something special. (Cont. on page 15) 14 CSJ Newsline Winter 2008 Although I knew Sister Mary was ill and not able to do the work she once enjoyed doing, I hadn’t expected her to die. In the short time we had together, she was able to tell me she thought the most important thing I needed was a sincere interest in the shop so that it would survive the changes that would take place once I took over. She emphasized there would be a difference in our style of doing things. How well she knew that change would take place. Sister had built a staff of wonderful volunteers who enjoy doing various crafts and are willing to attempt some new ideas. It didn’t take them long to surface some interesting variations on the crafts they enjoyed doing. They appeared to be relaxed with their unique crafts but interested in stretching their talents. This has been a great blessing for me as I entered into the realm of retail. Each volunteer welcomed me, offered some sound advice and discussed changes that may help us to improve the store. Sister Marilyn Donnelly and Sister Mary Denise Linehan are glad to display their creations. With the new arrangement there is plenty of room for browsing. The shop has been re-arranged allowing more people to shop at the same time. We have continued making many of the items Sister Mary introduced but we also acknowledged we don’t have the talent for some of the crafts Sister Mary was so good at doing. Surprisingly though, we are finding we have talents we didn’t know we had and have been using them for the past four or five months. It is my hope and prayer that we continue to work as a team and rejoice in our own and each other’s creativity. All those who “create” for the shop invite you to drop in to browse, to share some of your ideas that we may be able to incorporate into our ministry and let us know what you think of the changes we have made. We look forward to serving you. The second ministry taking place in the sewing room that is equally important is the sewing for the use of the Provincial House. Knowing the cost of things today, can you imagine how much it would cost us to have new drapes for the dining room? The dining room has 13 large windows (see picture on the left). The sisters shown in the pictures on the next page made the drapes. If you remember in an earlier issue of Newsline we showed the pictures of the drapes they made for the bedroom area of the new hospitality center. Between their drape making and mending clothing for retired sisters these sisters serve in a very valuable way. (Cont. on page 16) Winter 2008 CSJ Newsline 15 Sister Helen Leclerc and Sister John Loretta Sinnott do some ironing and finishing touches on dining room drapes. Sister Mary Clare Lussier and Sister Mary Lucille Grouchy work on creating and mending. r r r r r GOLFERS Mark your calendars now! As in the past, we are looking forward to seeing all the golfers and corporate sponsors at the 12th Annual CSJ Classic Golf Tournament to be held on Monday, May 12, 2008 at the Shaker Ridge Country Club. We are always seeking additional members for the committee. If interested, please call Ronnie at 783-3614. We look forward to your support! 16 CSJ Newsline Winter 2008 Gifts Gifts We acknowledge with gratitude those who have contributed to the mission and ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet from January 1 through December 31, 2007. We share the joy of those being honored on a special occasion and the pain of those mourning the loss of a loved one. Our benefactors and those being especially honored are remembered in the daily prayers of the sisters and in two Masses offered monthly in our Provincial House chapel. We have withheld some names at the request of the donors. If your name has been inadvertently omitted, please call the Development Office at (518) 783-3614. From time to time, your will may need to be updated to reflect current family members or to add to your favorite charity. If you are making out your will or planning to add a codicil, we invite you to remember the Sisters of St. Joseph in your plans. In this way, you will have a special share in the prayers and works of the CSJ Sisters and the Sisters will benefit, too. Rohloff, CSJ Thank you to all the donors who responded so generously to the request to help us with the purchase of appliances etc. for the Provincial House kitchen. The first item to be ordered is a hot serving cart with the “sneeze shield” on top. The order has been placed but the item has not yet arrived. It will be exactly like the one shown in the accompanying picture. Between what money we receive from grants and what our donors sent us we are very sure we will be able to purchase all the items we had hoped for and which were mentioned in the All Saints – All Souls Day Appeal. We are most grateful. Thus far we have only heard from the J.M. McDonald Foundation. Mr. McJunkin and the other board members of the Foundation awarded us $15,000 to help with the purchases. We are most grateful to them for their generous assistance. We have applied to two additional foundations and should be hearing from both of them by the end of March 2008. Hopefully, by the time the next issue of Newsline is published we will have received all the kitchen appliances and will notify you of the same. Winter 2008 CSJ Newsline 37 Where Are They Now? by Sister Patricia Allen Our sisters in this issue have a common thread of being from Schenectady and going to St. Columba’s School. We thank Sister Maddie Pallotta for thinking of the idea of such a significant memorial. Winter 2008 CSJ Newsline 39 Advent Parable During early December, Sisters Joyce Gadoua, Maria Bouleris, Marilyn Donnelly, Marie Bowe, and Jean Albert Burns presented "Welcome to the Inn of the Everlasting Arms". It consisted of storytelling (Joyce), piano playing (Marilyn Donnelly), clowning (Marie Bowe, Maria Bouleris and Jean Albert Burns) and singing by the 75 or so senior sisters who attended. This was a spectacular and a wonderful pre Advent event! An explanation of the parable follows and pictures relating to the presentation surround the text. An imaginary trip to The Inn of the Everlasting Arms, the first scenario in a series entitled "Praying and Playing with the Parables" was presented at the Provincial House in early Advent. Essentially, part of the Province Master Plan which you have read about in Newsline before (wink-wink) was to build a series of summer homes on wheels for the senior sisters to travel to warmer climates in winter and return from these leisure homes in late Spring. The traveling was accomplished in the realm of the imagination! The sisters were en route to Tucson but staying over at the Inn in Troy, Alabama as one of their stops. At the Inn of the Everlasting Arms, they were greeted by Miss Cora Lee (93) (Sister Joyce Gadoua), the proprietor of the Inn. She told a story of how the Inn came to be and it was all wrapped up in her first hearing of the Parable of the Yeast, by a circuit preacher way back in 1923. The details you don't need. Basically, while the story was being told, the sisters were treated to a demonstration of the parable by the Baker Clown, Miss Chloe, (Sister Jean Albert Burns) all funny stuff happened and in the process of making the dough rise, all kinds of (Cont. on page 41) 40 CSJ Newsline Winter 2008 Advent Parable continued... breads appeared. This you’d have to see… it can't quite be related. Because the loaves were multiplied right on the spot. The Inn guests had themselves a bread and "buttah pahty" with mint julep punch served by the clowns from this Southern town. During the feast, the house doctor, Doctor Magnolia (Sister Marie Bowe) and her associates Miss Etta Mae (Sister Marilyn Donnelly) and Miss Tara Belle (Sister Maria Bouleris) went around and took temperatures, blood pressures, gave out scripts and pills, and otherwise checked all the vitals so that the sisters left the Inn in good shape. Etta Mae went around and asked if the sisters needed a kiss, and then proceeded to give them all the sisters kisses, the candy kind. After the party, the Yankee Kissin' Cousin of Cora Lee came in to give a talk on some of the startling words in that parable. When done, Miss Etta Mae was introduced as a piano soloist who once played in the Lawrence Welk orchestra, that orchestra with the bubbles. So, Miss Etta Mae played a variation on Chopstix, much to the delight of the audience, and bubbles were blown in memory of her earlier career. Now it was time to pray the Clown Prayers. That done Miss Tara Belle was to be the soloist for the closing song, but she had such a hard time getting her note, that she asked for a choir. At that point, sisters were recruited from the audience, mostly the wheelchair bound. They were given red noses to wear as members of the Clown Choir. They did the scales three times, each time higher and hit every note. That done, Tara Belle led the singing and Clowns showed them how to sway to the song. The clowns gave each sister a parting gift, a card that reflected the experience of the parable. THE END (Needless to say ALL enjoyed the “trip” and look forward to continuing the journey in late January or February.) Winter 2008 CSJ Newsline 41 Sister Francis Denise Celebrates 100 Years of Living! December 3, 1907 was the day that Sister Francis Denise Haley, CSJ came into this world. Now, on December 3, 2007, Sister celebrated her 100th birthday in great style. This year December 3rd fell on a Monday but both on Saturday and Sunday Sister Francis celebrated with her family. Then on the actual day, Monday, sisters and staff in the full dining room at the Provincial House joined in singing HAPPY BIRTHDAY. The accompanying pictures show Sister, Father Geoff Burke who serves as the Provincial House chaplain and all who celebrated with her. 42 CSJ Newsline Winter 2008 Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Ziti Dinner Raffle Benefit: The Ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph Drawing: April 5, 2008 Name:___________________________ Address:_________________________ _________________________ Phone:___________________________ $1 each - $5 per st 1 Prize $1,000 nd 2 Prize $500 rd 3 Prize $250 th 5-4 Prizes $50 sheet (6) - $10 per sheet (12) Raffle ticket Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Ziti Dinner Raffle Benefit: The Ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph Drawing: April 5, 2008 Name:___________________________ Address:_________________________ _________________________ Phone:___________________________ $1 each - $5 per st 1 Prize $1,000 nd 2 Prize $500 rd 3 Prize $250 th 5-4 Prizes $50 sheet (6) - $10 per sheet (12) Raffle ticket Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Ziti Dinner Raffle Benefit: The Ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph Drawing: April 5, 2008 Name:___________________________ Address:_________________________ _________________________ Phone:___________________________ $1 each - $5 per st 1 Prize $1,000 nd 2 Prize $500 rd 3 Prize $250 th 5-4 Prizes $50 sheet (6) - $10 per sheet (12) Raffle ticket Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Ziti Dinner Raffle Benefit: The Ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph Drawing: April 5, 2008 Name:___________________________ Address:_________________________ _________________________ Phone:___________________________ $1 each - $5 per st 1 Prize $1,000 nd 2 Prize $500 rd 3 Prize $250 th 5-4 Prizes $50 sheet (6) - $10 per sheet (12) Raffle ticket Sisters of St. Joseph Drawing: April 5, 2008 Name:___________________________ Address:_________________________ _________________________ Phone:___________________________ $1 each - $5 per Winter 2008 Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Ziti Dinner Raffle Benefit: The Ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph Drawing: April 5, 2008 Name:___________________________ Address:_________________________ _________________________ Phone:___________________________ $1 each - $5 per st 1 Prize $1,000 nd 2 Prize $500 rd 3 Prize $250 th 5-4 Prizes $50 sheet (6) - $10 per sheet (12) Raffle ticket Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Ziti Dinner Raffle Benefit: The Ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph Drawing: April 5, 2008 Name:___________________________ Address:_________________________ _________________________ Phone:___________________________ $1 each - $5 per st 1 Prize $1,000 nd 2 Prize $500 rd 3 Prize $250 th 5-4 Prizes $50 sheet (6) - $10 per sheet (12) Raffle ticket Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Ziti Dinner Raffle Benefit: The Ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph Drawing: April 5, 2008 Name:___________________________ Address:_________________________ _________________________ Phone:___________________________ $1 each - $5 per st 1 Prize $1,000 nd 2 Prize $500 rd 3 Prize $250 th 5-4 Prizes $50 sheet (6) - $10 per sheet (12) Raffle ticket Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet Ziti Dinner Raffle Benefit: The Ministries of the Sisters of St. Joseph Drawing: April 5, 2008 Name:___________________________ Address:_________________________ _________________________ Phone:___________________________ $1 each - $5 per st 1 Prize $1,000 nd 2 Prize $500 rd 3 Prize $250 th 5-4 Prizes $50 sheet (6) - $10 per sheet (12) Raffle ticket Sisters of St. Joseph Drawing: April 5, 2008 st 1 Prize $1,000 nd 2 Prize $500 rd 3 Prize $250 th 5-4 Prizes $50 sheet (6) - $10 per sheet (12) Raffle ticket Name:___________________________ Address:_________________________ _________________________ Phone:___________________________ $1 each - $5 per st 1 Prize $1,000 nd 2 Prize $500 rd 3 Prize $250 th 5-4 Prizes $50 sheet (6) - $10 per sheet (12) Raffle ticket CSJ Newsline 43 WINNER NEED NOT BE PRESENT WINNER NEED NOT BE PRESENT No contribution necessary to qualify for prizes. One blessing we are experiencing is our privilege to have promised prayers to over 2,000 people that have received a prayer shawl, lap robe and baby blanket. Another blessing is all the volunteers that knit and crochet these beautiful garments with us from each corner of the state. It is only because of those involved (mostly lay women) that we have been able to keep up with the many requests we receive. When this ministry began four years ago, our expectation was that several friends and acquaintances would be recipients but never did we expect to reach over 2,000 people. It is an honor for us to know all these people become a big part of our remembrance in prayer. We are hoping to work with more parishes who might be interested in beginning this ministry right in their own parish. It is a wonderful way to involve women and in the name of the parish, give to someone a shawl along with the promise of prayerful support. Once the ministry is started and becomes a regular bulletin item, people will gratefully begin requesting them. One such parish is St. Paul’s in Whitesboro. We spoke of the idea behind the ministry at the weekend Masses and offered an opportunity for people to request a garment. By the end of the weekend we had eighty seven people who signed up for shawls and lap robes. Subsequent to the talk, an invitation was placed in the bulletin asking for weaver volunteers or anyone interested in learning to knit or crochet to come together for the purpose of making these prayer garments. When the young lady in charge of recruiting volunteers told a group of ladies she visited in the senior housing unit about the ministry starting, several wanted to be involved. To this date there are approximately 35 happy and enthused weavers. They speak of feeling such a sense of involvement and accomplishment. A doctor in Georgia, himself a cancer patient, was sitting in a rather chilly room receiving his treatment when the thought struck him that the prayer Winter 2008 shawls he read about would be perfect for the folks receiving treatment prescribed for their cancer. After speaking to the nurse, who thought it was a wonderful idea, he made contact and asked if it was possible to send him prayer shawls and lap robes that could be brought to the clinic. He reports that the idea was well received and has heard that many folks bring their garment back in and continue to keep warm while sitting there. Once again, I thank all of you who have responded to these articles in Newsline. Several of you have contacted us to send a garment to someone you know who would appreciate the gift of prayer. Please remember these are free of charge, though we always would be grateful for a donation to be used for more yarn. We regret also having to increase the price for shipping and handling. We have all been affected by the increase in postage rates and since we ship them priority, each box costs approximately $8.00. If you have anything to share about giving a garment to someone or receiving the shawl, please feel free to drop me a line. Hearing how someone feels about receiving this gift might help others to realize the benefits involved. Bright Horizons provides social day care services for persons who need extra care. By using the services provided, adults in need are able to remain in their home environment for a greater length of time than would otherwise be possible. Shown in the picture are staff, lay and sister participants. All the floors of the Provincial House enjoyed their singing of Christmas Carols as much as they who visited and sang. The St. Hilaire sisters, Sisters Adelina and Yvonne, were in the “Christmas Spirit” as they sang Christmas carols and songs at the Provincial House Christmas Party. Oh, it could depress, this month, if you let it, if you don't look beneath the surface. But multiple richnesses if you do: year's brand newness, winter's midpoint, time to turn inward, nurture seed, worship fire, sing to see white magic falling. Mystic within is brought to the brim with the crystalline fullness of winter. Charles C.
