To organise, lead and supervise the day-to-day provision of an efficient technical
support service to support teaching and learning in the faculty/ department
Role Accountabilities
1
Operational
management
Consult relevant academic managers and staff to assess, plan and organise technical
facilities to meet current and future needs for courses and students ensuring the
provision of an efficient technical support service
2
Support to staff
and students
Ensure that students are provided with the appropriate levels of support, advice and
practical assistance in the use of equipment and techniques used in the various
workshops/ laboratories and provide support to staff as required

Equipment and
facilities mgt
Ensure efficient and maximum use of the facilities through appropriate allocation of work
to technical staff and the provision of advice to academic staff on the use of the facilities

Liaison and
communication
Liaise with heads of department and academic staff, other faculties and university
central services to ensure efficient use of facilities

Training
Oversee the programme of training and retraining of students and staff in the use of the
specialist equipment and techniques, ensuring accurate records of all the training
provided is kept according to faculty policy

Staff supervis’n
& development
Recruit to the team, induct, allocate and supervise the work of the team and implement
the staff development review (appraisal) process and arrange training where
appropriate to ensure effective performance of the team

Equipment
maintenance
Co-ordinate the equipment maintenance programme including testing, monitoring, fault
diagnosis and repair of all machine tools, workshop and other equipment as
appropriate, ensure all equipment is subject to the required safety tests and records are
kept in accordance with DMU policy

Health & Safety
Ensure compliance with safety policy and other regulations, ensure that risk
assessments are made, advise academic, technical staff and students on aspects of
health and safety, ensure students and staff are provided with all necessary safety
equipment appropriate to the work undertaken in each area and are subject to
appropriate levels of supervision

Stock control
Process requests for materials and other consumables and sanction the procurement in
accordance with financial procedures to ensure that sufficient stock is available
Oversee materials stores and the issue of materials to students ensuring required
records are kept
Maintenance of

Ensure that all areas are kept clean, tidy and safe for all users and maintained to the
highest standards

Nature & scope of
role
Must have extensive experience in one or more required areas of technical expertise,
typically gained in HE or a similar student-focused environment, sufficient to enable the
understanding of the application of concepts and principles in a range of situations and
to deliver a quality service in a cost-effective manner. Must have supervisory or team
leadership experience
Post holder must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, knowledge of
Health and Safety regulations and their impact on the work activities, and the ability to
deal effectively with students and staff at all levels who will often have different
priorities. Good IT skills, in particular Word Processing, Excel and Email are essential
Graduate or equivalent with an additional technical or professional qualification related
to field of experience.
