Commitment to customers has been the driving force of the Insl-x Company since it was started as the
Stevens Paint Company in 1948. That’s the year Martin Weil began manufacturing drum enamels for
the drum reconditioning industry.
In 1960, Stevens Paint acquired Insl-x Products Corporation. Martin Weil and his partners saw Insl-x
Products Corporation as an opportunity to expand its product offering and build on new technologies.
Ins-x Products Corporation dated back to 1936 when the company first started as a manufacturer of
insulating varnishes. In 1979, current president James Weil bought out the interests of his father and
his father’s partners in Stevens Paint. Concerned about the future of the drum reconditioning business,
the company, now operating under the Insl-x Products Corporation name, began to develop new
products for a variety of markets.
Some of the new focus was placed in the industrial maintenance coatings market. This expanded
product focus added new high performance enamels, epoxies, primers and swimming pool paints to the
Insl-x line. The company also began servicing independent paint retailers in the Northeastern United
States. By 1982, Insl-x had outgrown the original 8,000 square feet of manufacturing and
administrative space, so additional adjacent space was acquired.
Over the next several years, key product introductions by Insl-x fueled significant growth in various
market segments.
AQUALOCK® for example, the market’s first water reducible primer-sealer-stain killer, catapulted Insl-x
onto the national coatings stage in 1983. Initially tested by the Boston Housing Authority, it quickly
became a staple when painters found they could paint every substrate with the product and get the
adhesion, coverage and re-coatability they required.
From 1985 to 2000, Insl-x purchased several northeast paint companies as its business expanded from
specialty and industrial products to architectural coatings as well. With steady growth and new
customers, 1990 brought the opportunity to expand the manufacturing facilities outside of the Yonkers
based manufacturing plant and Insl-x purchased 23 acres in Stony Point, New York. There Insl-x built
one of the most environmentally friendly paint manufacturing facilities in the country. In 1993, Insl-x
won the NPCA Pollution Prevention Award in recognition of it’s commitment to the environment and the
future. In just ten years Insl-x had grown from 8,000 square feet to 170,000 square feet under one
roof. Over the next several years new distribution centers were opened to aid expansion and better
service its customers’ needs.
In 2000, Insl-x acquired Bruning Paints, a well known manufacturer of trade sales paint in Baltimore,
MD. With this purchase, Insl-x also acquired Kyanize brand paints, which was manufactured by Bruning
at the time and another 100,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Baltimore. The Bruning
acquisition signaled a commitment to the trade sales markets in the US and brought a significant
customer base into the Insl-x family of independent dealers.
Coronado Paint, along with Maxum Wood Stains, became a part of the Insl-x family of brands in 2004.
Coronado was already a full line manufacturer of products for homeowners and professionals. Maxum is
a well known brand of quality exterior wood stains. The Coronado acquisition set the stage for Insl-x to
enter the trade sales market on a national scale. In addition to national brand recognition, Coronado
added a 190,000 square foot manufacturing facility on 16 acres in Edgewater, Florida and distribution
facilities in Illinois and Texas. Lenmar Wood Coatings was acquired along with Coronado in 2004.
Lenmar is a nationally known brand of fine wood finishes for the OEM and professional wood markets.
The 142,000 square foot Lenmar manufacturing facility replaced the Bruning facility as the center of
manufacturing in the Baltimore area.
Also in 2006, a strategic alliance was formed with Invista Corp., owners of the Stainmaster® brand. For
more than 20 years, the Stainmaster® brand was recognized as a clear leader in stain resistance and
durability for carpeting in homes and businesses. As part of this alliance, the Stainmaster® brand was
launched as a paint brand. Insl-x began producing and distributing Stainmaster® brand paint in fall
2006, which now enjoys an 80% consumer awareness level and is a clear choice for the consumer and
2006, which now enjoys an 80% consumer awareness level and is a clear choice for the consumer and
in the residential architectural paint markets.
Continuing to broaden its markets, in 2006 Insl-x acquired the Trinity Wood Coatings. The addition of
Trinity Lacquers expands Insl-x’s commitment to the wood coatings market and gives Insl-x a sound
manufacturing facility in Texas which will expand to supply products to the western US and Canada.
Insl-x Products Corporation now markets products under 6 key brands that serve all major paint and
coatings markets covering multiple distribution channels. It does this from four environmentally sound
manufacturing facilities and seven distribution centers that service North American and overseas
interests. With over 400,000 square feet of manufacturing and warehouse distribution, Insl-x is well
equipped to continue leading the way in today’s competitive paint market.
Dedication to customer service is reflected not only in the breadth and quality of the company’s product
line, but also in the way Insl-x treats its customers. Insl-x employees go the extra distance every day,
offering a full range of technical and administrative assistance to support the company’s complete line
of quality products. This commitment to strengthening customer relationships continues to have a
positive impact for both Insl-x and its customers. According to Jim Weil, President, "In today's highly
competitive marketplace, having the toughest, best quality product means nothing if it is not backed by
a solid commitment to service. We pride ourselves on being customer driven, and view our relationships
as partnerships. Offering the very best products backed by a complete support network will enable both
Insl-x and our customer partners to move profitably into the years ahead.”
In March of 2008, Insl-x Products Corporation became a wholly owned subsidiary of Benjamin Moore &
Co.
Insl-x now headquartered in Montvale, New Jersey operates manufacturing and distribution centers in
New Jersey, Florida, Maryland, Illinois, Nevada, Texas and Alaska.
