Kibworth 6 - Sunday March 6th 2016
Facilities
The Kibworth 6 race is licenced for up to 700 competitors. Race HQ will be the Sports Hall, Kibworth High School,
which is on Smeeton Road (postcode LE8 0LG). League Official’s race registration desk, club registration desks
and sports clothing sales area will all be in the Sports Hall. The Kibworth WI will be offering refreshments in the
Sports Hall Entrance. There are toilet facilities in the Sports Hall Entrance but there are limited changing facilities
(other than in the Sports Hall itself) and we don’t have access to showers. It is a bit of a walk from the Sports Hall
to the Start Line so all runners to give themselves enough time. The race will start promptly at 10.30 a.m.
Cancellation of Race
The event could be cancelled on the day (or earlier) if extremely poor weather is encountered, the last dynamic
risk assessment finds a major issue rendering the race unsafe, number of runners exceeding 700 limit, a “no
show” for medical provision, and unsafe parking of cars around the immediate area of the school causing
obstructions to householder and the route race.
Parking – please car share wherever possible
The following car parks will be available for runners in order of distance to the start – (closest first):
Kibworth High School, Smeeton Road, Kibworth (LE8 0LG) – this car park will be closed until 0900 except for
Disabled Drivers and Race Officials. Only cars with 3 or more occupants will be allowed entry into this car park.
Cars will not be able to exit this car park between 10 a.m. and 10.45 a.m.
Kibworth Health Centre, Smeeton Road, Kibworth (LE8 0LG) – small number of places
Kibworth Grammar School Hall, School Road, Kibworth, LE8 0EW
Kibworth Cricket Club, Fleckney Road, Kibworth, LE8 0HG – this car park is a fair walk to Race Q and the start
Safety
Please remind runners to be prepared for whatever the weather decides to do. In March it can be cold (with
increased risk of hypothermia - exposure’) or warmer – please adjust clothing and preparations as needed. The
age restriction is 17 years and above for runners. Runners should not take their “cool-down” in the direction of
the oncoming race runners. This is dangerous due to oncoming traffic and is a likely “disqualification” for any
runner that ignores the marshals’ directions. It would be preferable for those wanting to “cool-down” to do so
towards and around Kibworth village – while taking the necessary care of themselves and others in respect of
traffic and other pedestrians.
While it is understood that runners might want to provide support to runners finishing later than themselves,
please do not “coach” other runners either on foot or by bike at the finish or elsewhere on the course. (It can be
particularly confusing for those managing the finish when runners appear to finish twice). Headphones are not
permitted and if worn runners may be asked to leave the race resulting in disqualification.

RACE REPORTS:
Peddars Way Ultra
In 2014 I took part in the very first Peddars Way Ultra, a 48 mile point to point race across Norfolk, starting at
Knittishall Heath in Suffolk and finishing at Holme Next the Sea on the North Norfolk coast. How hard could it be
I thought – Norfolk’s flat, it’s on a well-marked national trail, all I had to do was run… let’s just say it didn’t quite
go to plan! After taking an unexpected swim and then getting lost I managed to finish and was 9th overall. But I
knew right away that I’d run it again.
2015 was a whitewash for me as life in general just got in the way and I only toed the start line 3 times. The
weather was a shocker for the 2015 Peddars Way so I didn’t feel too disappointed that I missed out.
After feeling re-energized by participating in the 401 Runner Bean Marathon between Christmas and New Year I
sat down to plan a race calendar for 2016 and the Peddars Way Ultra was on my radar once again. Could I run
48 miles on very little training? There was only 1 way to find out.
After a sleepless night in Thetford the night before the race the 30th January was up on us. It was a cold, grey,
windy morning as the runners congregated at Knittishall Heath. It was bitterly cold as I collected my race
number. The start is little more than a car park and in the gloom 129 runners and an assortment of supporters,
family and friends gathered round for a race briefing and final instructions and then at 8 am 3,2,1 go, we were
off.
From a slow tip-toeing as we all set off to then a surge along the trail as the runners tried to find their true place
and pace. A long line of runners snaked out along the trail. It was hard to stick to my plan of steady and more
steady as is the case in many long runs – it feels very easy at the start but, as I know to my case, the numbers
don’t lie, and if you haven’t put in the miles, at some point the wheels will come off.
As we weaved along through the trail I found myself in a small group sitting at the back, listening to them
chatting about this race, other races, and their plans and pace for the day. All felt very easy until I heard the
beep of my watch and I looked in horror to see 7.5 minute miles, not overly quick I know, but not the 9 minute
pace I had in the mind at the start. This was not sustainable, not today, not for me. I was torn as I felt so
comfortable listening in but I knew I would blow, so with some sadness I let them ease but I kept them in sight.
2, 3, 4 runners passed me as the miles ticked by. Checkpoint 1 came and went and a top up of water was all I
needed. It was just after that I saw Kate, my better-half, who had come to support me. “How are you going?”
she asked “I’m fine” I replied. And with that I was through the hedge and gone. As the day wore on and the sun
came out, clear blue skies punctuated by fluffy white clouds that whizzed along in the still strong wind. It wasn’t
head wind which came as a great relief.
Just before Castle Hill halfway and checkpoint 2, me and another runner witnessed 2 other runners
disappearing into the distance in the wrong direction, having missed a turn. We both shouted and whistled but
out attempts were in vain, as they disappeared over a crest and gone. As we jogged into the warmth of
checkpoint 2, 5 or 6 other runners were already in there taking on fluids and fuel. I was taken by how white they
all looked with cold. I didn’t feel I dare stop in fear of seizing up, unable to start again so I headed straight back
out again only needing to top up my water bottle, as I had enough food in my pack, which also contained my
mandatory kit.
1. A full set of waterproofs (jacket and trousers)
2. Map of the route
3. Compass
4. Whistle
5. Charged mobile phone with race directors’ no. programmed in
6. Hat.

Spare set of thermals.
Enough food and water for 13.5 miles of running
Survival bag
Head torch.
I also had some blister plasters, pain killers, Vaseline and some emergency loo roll.
Back out on the trail I passed another runner. I soon felt my legs tightening up and my quads felt sore. I was
forced to take a walk break as I grabbed some Ibruprofen and some food and water. I walked and jogged a
short bit and felt better able to run once again. I was surprised I was not caught and passed at this point but I
was happy in my own thoughts. I jogged through the countryside, the route is sparsely populated and the
scenery is simply stunning.
I didn’t see another soul until I made it to checkpoint 3, where, once again, Kate shouting encouragement and
had some shocking news as I asked how many were in front. “You’re 4 th” she replied “You’re kidding me” I
said. “You’re really well, how are you feeling?” “I’m OK” I replied “I’d better get off”. With a wave and a shout
of thanks I was off – 2 more Mars Bars and some water to keep me going. It’s all in head, as I at no point
thought I would be this far up the field. I was now running scared. With 12 miles left to run all I could think
was “just don’t get passed”.
It’s funny I never once thought about catching the 3rd place runner I was in a world of pain, everything hurt.
Now this is by no means hilly but the route starts to undulate and there are areas when you can see both a
long way ahead and behind but at no point did I see another runner. As the miles ticked off I started to
shorten the run to the runs I do at home.
8 miles a club run
7 miles a loop of Loughborough Bypass
5 Epinal Way and back
3 to the pool and back
2 to the school and back
Water – not enough water for the last stretch – I’ve messed this right up as I tried an outside tap at the front
of a house – how have I let this happen? Then just as I was giving up I spied a man painting his porch and
asked for a top up – he was only too happy to help and saved my race. Before long I was at the junction for
the beach. As I jogged down to the beach road to rip a page from a book tied to the Peddars Way signpost
before heading back along to the small village hall and the finish, 7:26:10 – 4th overall
A great medal and a T shirt and buff – loads of hot food and drink and a catch up with Kate and congratulate
the first 3. The winner, Nick Greene, finishing in a time of 6:34:00 and the last person home in 12:21:43.

Oldest finisher 67 and the youngest 22

First lady and three times winner, Karen Doah 7:59:24 who finished 14th overall.

TRIATHLON COLUMN:
Barrow Runners are welcome at Charnwood Tri Training Sessions
Barrow Runners and Charnwood Triathlon Club have a co-operative arrangement that means all Charnwood Tri
training sessions are open to Barrow Runners members.
Swim training and Bike Training can complement and improve your running ability and help balance your muscle
development and core strength. Or if you fancy trying Triathlon as a change to just running we can help you train
and prepare properly.
We have loads of swim training opportunities and it costs just £4.50 a session where you’ll get highly skilled swim
coaching from Jim West (Head Coach of Loughborough Town) or our own Kirsty Hillier. Swimming is all about
technique so you may be amazed at how quickly some skills training will make a difference.
The sessions are Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 6.45 to 7.45 at Charnwood College,
Thursday evening 7.45 to 8.45 and Saturday morning (not coached) 7.15 to 8.15 at Welbeck College, Woodhouse.
You need to be able to do 200 metres front crawl, but not at any particular speed.
We go cycling (free) from B&Q at Loughborough 9.30 am Saturday Mornings. We generally do 2 hours and split
into two groups if possible to cater for different speeds. We always look after each other!
So if you fancy trying either, either chat to one of the numerous Barrow Runners who are also in Charnwood Tri
or chat or email me at chris.trzcinski@btinternet.com.
Look forward to seeing you!

CLUB CHAIRMAN:
Many of you will remember last year when Doug Skehan gave a talk on CPR and the launch of the defibrillator
into the community. Well following a near fatal incident at a Derby Runner X Country last month Doug, alongside
other medical partners from Glenfield Hospital, will brief and train running clubs within the county.
We have booked Humphrey Perkins School for Monday 18th April at 7pm with the intention of training people to
become trainers themselves. Various clubs from the nearby location will be invited. Barrow Runners are looking
for 5 or 6 volunteers who would like to become trainers. If you would like to know more please have a chat with
either Dougie or myself at training.
AGM Tuesday 22nd March 2016
The club's AGM is not that far away so if you feel you have something to offer the club and would like to get
involved with the running of the club please speak to Nigel Hillier or myself. We are always looking for fresh
blood.
The Coaching Team
As we come to the end of the winter season I hope you have enjoyed what our coaching team have offered you.
We continue to inform you of where the session is and what the session consists of.
From April we will return to Quorn, the Beacon field and hopefully Ratcliffe College when the new track is
finished. Being on the various tracks we make it easier to invite guests to deliver their session, unlike being on
strange roads.
The coaching team have worked hard to improve the sessions and make sure that every Thursday evening
someone is there to deliver the training. Thank you James, Emily, Matt, Naomi and John Rees.

OUCH!! - The Injury and Missing Persons list:
Final lap of my marathon!
At last I’ve reached the (hopefully) final stage of my successful treatment for bowel cancer. I’m going into
Leicester General Hospital on 25 January for an ileostomy reversal operation. I expect to be in hospital for 3 to 5
days and then I’ve been warned that it will be 6 to 8 months before I feel fully recovered. I’m going into the
operation positively and hope in due course to make a lasting comeback to running!
