MARKET UPDATE
Resource Guide
The European and North American Markets for
Remote Monitoring Services
Niall Jenkins, Market Analyst, Security & Fire Group
IMS Research
Background
Published in January 2008, IMS Research’s latest report on remote security investigates the market trends, growth drivers and leading providers to
the remote monitoring industry. Compiled from over 35 interviews with
service providers and suppliers to the industry these reports provide a
unique insight into the remote monitoring service market. This article summarises some of the findings from the North American volume.
The remote monitoring market, for the purposes of this research, was
defined in recurring monthly revenues (RMR) and monitored accounts. The
market estimates do not include proprietary commercial monitoring or revenues generated by independent alarm installers who do not monitor their
own accounts.
fecting the monitoring industry is the false alarm rate on triggered alarms.
The most common verifications techniques used in North America are to
call a list of numbers provided by the customer or to immediately dispatch
on receipt of an alarm (see Figure 2).
Two-way voice, audio and manned response are used primarily in highend solutions in the residential and commercial markets. Two-way voice is
a growing market although it has a relatively small install base when compared to standard call list or dispatch. Audio verification is a niche market
for customers that require verification without having video in their residence. Manned guards are found in ordinances where it is a monitoring requirement and also in exclusive areas such as Beverly Hills. Sequential
monitoring is rare in the North American market as it is not required by
most cities or states.
Competitive Environment
IMS Research estimates that there are 14,000 small to medium alarm dealers in North America. It is possible, under current regulations, for these

Witness reports, multiple alarm trips and video or audio verification are
some examples of verifying conditions requiring police response. Intrusion
alarms initiated by banking institutions, schools, facilities containing drugs
or weapons and property owned by the city, require police response and are
exempt from the VRP. Robbery, panic and fire alarms are also exempt from
this policy..
Trend to Mega-Stations
Another important issue common to both the American and Canadian
monitoring markets is the move towards “mega-stations” and a continued
trend of mergers and acquisitions. As the owners of independent alarm
dealers retire they are selling-up to the large players resulting in a more consolidated market. This will heavily impact the wholesale monitoring market.
It is also likely that price will become more
competitive and the increased variety
of monitoring options available to customers will generate additional
monthly revenue per account.

mary line fails. The VoIP connection is not as reliable as a traditional telephone line and a lack of industry standards can result in some alarm systems
sending a signal that is not understood by the central station. These issues
are currently being ironed out; however, the connection can still be susceptible to power outages and downtime.
Increased availability of IP and VoIP is tied closely to the growth of IP
in the remote monitoring market. Most industry experts see IP as the future
of the monitoring industry though just how quickly this will happen remains
to be seen.
Increasing the Product Portfolio
Central stations are increasingly looking to generate additional revenues
from their existing customers. To increase the RMR that can be generated
per account, new products and services are being offered to customers. We
have already covered video monitoring however there are other services
which generate new revenues.
Verification technology such as
two-way voice and audio can generate
higher monthly charges. Both methods generate RMR as they require

IP Transmission
There are a number of implications for the video and alarm monitoring
industry in using IP, including the increased bandwidth and price benefits
that can be gained. The bandwidth provided by IP is well suited to the level
of data supplied in commercially monitored video. The transmission speed
means sending large amounts of data, such as images, can be completed
more efficiently.
Most remote video monitoring stations will recommend that a dedicated
IP line is used. The central station will retain control of the administration
rights for the IP line to avoid any changes which could affect signal integrity.
In many cases, the IP line can be used for video transmission and general internet services simultaneously, although this will increase the probability of
signal loss.
IP is a fairly new technology to the remote monitoring market. Many central stations still require a secondary telephone line as back-up in case the pri-

Balancing, communicating and maintaining enclosure based
power distribution has become increasingly complex. Eaton®
understands these complexities and offers a complete suite of
Enclosure Power Distribution Units (ePDUs) to meet your current and future demands. Eaton is making the selection of
ePDUs easy with three simple questions. 1. How much power
do you need? 2. What functionality do you need? 3. Which inputs and outputs do you need? This allows you to precisely
match up the combination of features and power ratings
needed for each application. Contact us to learn more about,
which power solutions work best for you.
www.RemoteMagazine.com
Wilmore Electronics designs and manufactures DC-DC Converters and DC-AC Inverters to power voice/data networks, SCADA
