Fully shielded fixtures
may be positioned along
landscape cutouts and
pathways to add safety,
security and visibility at

lights may be positioned
behind taller greenery;
this allows light to filter

distributes more illumination throughout the landscape.

A cable should be protected from
overload. The NEC allows a
maximum load of 80% of the
cable’s ampacity.
For 10 & 8 gauge cables, the
current is limited to 80% of the
25A fuse/circuit breaker rating of
the 300W transformer
(80% of 25A = 20A)

Technical Resources- LED Total Cost of Ownership (TCO)
When it comes to LED lighting systems, one of the biggest objections you may encounter when proposing a design to your customer is the difference in cost between halogen
and LED lamps.
First, consider a 20W halogen lamp with a 4,000hr lamp life and a retail price of $10.00, and compare a LED MR16 with a 40,000hr lamp life and a retail price of $64.00. If
both lamps run 6 hours per night, 365 days per year, at a $0.12/KWh utility cost(national average), the expense will be:
Single Halogen Operating Expense: 20W x 6hr/night x 365 nights = 438KWh x $0.12/KWh = $5.26 per year
Single LED Operating Expense: 6W x 6hr/night x 365 nights = 131.4KWh x $0.12/KWh = $1.58 per year
MR 16
Consider a completely new system install, and now the cost savings on an LED system extends to the transformer and wire selection as well.
If you begin with a small project, requiring eleven (11) MR16 uplights, five (5)MR16 downlights, three (3) pathlights, and seven (7) decklights and include either 20W bipin
halogen lamps for the pathlights, and 16.5W wedge base halogen lamps for the decklights,or Illumicare’s 2.5W bipin and wedge base LED lamps, the total operating expense
will be:
Halogen Operating Expense: 496W x 6hr/night x 365 nights = 1086.25Wh x $0.12KWh = $130.35 per year
LED Operating Expense: 121W x 6hr/night x 365 nights = 265KWh x $0.12/KWh = $31.80 per year
If you allow an average of 80W per run, and an average run length of 100 ft, you would require 620 ft of wire for the halogen system. For a completely LED system, that
install would require only 150 ft of wire. or the Halogen system you must also budget for one 500W transformer(very tight), and one 250W transformer(with plenty to spare)
for the LED. Given the cost savings on the transformer and wire, the LED lamps for this job would only cost an additional $200-$250
If you were to take that $200-$250 extra cost for the upgrade to LED, and charge the homeowner a befitting $1000 your profit increases accordingly, and the homeowner realizes a return on his investment in Year 5 with a very impressive overall savings through the life of the system.

secondary wire runs to a maximum of 25 amps . These runs exceed 25 amps.
Distance of wire is calculated from the transformer to the first connection point only All calculations are assuming 120 volts at outlet. 8‐2 wire is rated for a maximum of 40 amps and 480 watts. According to the NEC, always use no more than 80% of maximum load on wire. 25 amps and 300 watts at 80%
