FEDERAL Labor has pledged

The four-lane stretch of road

Love a debate
LIKE many people in the
audience at Notre Dame on
Tuesday, I was disappointed
the Liberal candidate for
Fremantle wasn’t able to
attend and explain her
opinions and policies on
issues of importance.
I love these old-style “town
hall meet the candidates”
debates. They are vital to our
democracy because electors get to
see and hear what the candidates
are really like, away from all the
falsehoods of political advertising
and 100 per cent party machine
control of message.
For me, climate change is the
pa amount issue and it figu ed
prominently in the debate.
To assist the Liberal
candidate, I took the publicspirited action of contacting her,
o e ing to pass on he position
on climate change to Fremantle
people via the Chook.
She thanked me, and
informed me that her party’s
three word slogan on climate
change was “Keep it Hot.”
Hope this helps, though it’s
not as good as the opportunity
taken by the other candidates
to fully explain their position.
However, I’m sure the Chook
would oblige any request by the
candidate to outline how her
party plans to make the slogan
a reality.

Have your say on disability services in Perth
Thursday 30 June 2016
10.00am – 1.00pm
(Appointments are essential)
People with disability, their families, carers and service providers in the Perth
metropolitan area are invited to meet with a Board member to share their experiences
and ideas in relation to disability services provided by the Commission.

and the Board of the Disability Services Commission. Consumers, key community groups and
service providers are able to raise their individual issues directly with a Board member and have
personal input on disability service delivery in the region.
Appointments will be held at Disability Services Commission, 146-160 Colin Street, West Perth.
If you wish to make an appointment please contact:
Lauren Watson by no later than Monday 27 June 2016.

Shame on the councillors elected
by ratepayers for disregarding your
voters — or dissenters — who have
dogs as family members.
Don’t forget 39 per cent of Oz
households have dogs.
Shame on you for sacking
the long-su e ing long-se ing
ange s and lea ing a s eleton sta
of one, who will have to contend
with ‘security’ issues on her own.
For a start that will be
putting her at risk.
Shame on you for so
disrespecting the intense work
that is entailed in dog control,
interactions, education of the
public and rescuing dogs at risk.
Dogs who’ve gone wandering;
dogs te ified b thunde o
hideous fi e o s ogs escaped
from gates left open by utilities- or

Saving the lives of dogs is a very
important part of a ranger’s duties
which will not be possible with one
ranger covering Fremantle from
Port Beach to Samson.
Shame on your disregard for the
dog population; your attitude rates
minus-1 on the scale of ethics and
animal welfare.

What about
the dogs...
We’ve lived in the Manning
Park area for the last two years and
bought here because we love the
ridge and how it makes us feel like
we are in the bush rather than the
city.
My husband and I are very
concerned about having a road
along the ridge and apartment
buildings on the west side.
We went for a walk there last
night, noting as Frank suggested
where the yellow survey marker
is and it is a hideous thought that
there would be a road through
there.
In fact, the marker we saw
is exactly where we and lots of
other local residents watched the
ust alia a fi e o s om
earlier this year – great vantage
point!
Aside from the views, the ridge
is home to many birds and is an
important food source for black
cockatoos who visit to feast on
the d and a the seem to flo e
almost all year round.
Given Cockburn council’s
support for revegetating bushland
to supply food for Carnaby’s
as well as their Say No to Roe
approach we are surprised they
would think it acceptable to have
a road running along the ridgeline
and apartments taking up land that
could be used for all rather than
just a few.
The new steps at Manning
Park are attracting more people
all the time who are getting out
and exploring the tracks that wind
all around the hill and ridge, not
to mention a noted increase in
mountain bikers.
This reinforces what Frank
wrote about “open spaces being
far more important to livability
and health than another road or
exclusive views from apartments”.
We really cannot understand
why the road needs to be there
anyway when there is already
Cockburn Road down below. Could
that not be upgraded instead? And
do we really need more apartments
hen the e is a significant
letters
downturn in the real estate market,
with already built apartments being
di cult to sell and o lease.
We would be very keen to get a
community group together to Say No
to the Ridgeline Road and West Side
Apartments. Lets make this happen,
or rather not happen!

Someone will

REGARDING your story about
the family whose car was hit by a
golf ball at Point Walter (“Slice of
bad luck”, Herald, June 18, 2016).
My car was hit by a golf ball in one
of those ‘rare’ accidents the council
was talking about.
I had my 4-year-old and my 2-yearold nephew in the car at the time and
it missed the side window near my
nephew by centimetres.
My car was one month old when
the damage occurred.
The excess was going to be more
than the repair so the damage still
exists today.
I contacted the golf club and was
basically told that they wouldn’t do
anything and that I could try my luck
with the council, but compensation
would be unlikely.
They did mention the signs and the
trees like they were going to prevent
these incidents happening.
Rare ... I don’t think so!
Is someone going to be injured or
worse one day? Yes. Point Walter is
a family destination. A tragedy will
happen one day.

Ramadhan’s
here
WE are passing through month
of Ramadhan, a month of fasting,
sac ifice and e o ts to be close to
God.
We observe that man has
progressed a lot but is unable to
reduce his anxiety and dissatisfaction.
Some say that if they secure a good
ob the
ill be satisfied and thei
anxiety will end. Others may think
that by marrying love of their life,
they will be content.
But in reality there is no end to
this anxiety: if one gets a mountain of
gold, he will desire for another.
There are many who, only for a
sound sleep, take drugs and injections
and sometimes lose their lives in it.
Many, who are wealthy, famous and
have every luxury that this world
can o e use dange ous d ugs o
moments of happiness.
The question is that what is the
cause of this restlessness and what is
its cure?
Allah says in Holy Quran
(Ch13:V29) that comfort of hearts is
in remembrance of God. Therefore,
man can acquire real contentment
from God. By acquiring knowledge
of attributes of God, adopting His
attributes and praying, one can
acquire certainty. Because it is a fact
that one cannot build any connection
with God if he or she is uncertain
about His existence.

Did you know that dogs and cats become seniors
at seven years of age?
From here onwards they need extra special attention. In fact,
pets need health check-ups more often than we humans do,
because they age seven times faster than us! The team at
Hilton Vet Hospital recommends that you take your older pet for
a health check-up at the vet at least every 6 months. That would
compare to a senior person going to the doctor only every three
years. This July is Senior Pet Month at Hilton Vet Hospital, with
lots of special o ers and savings available.
“Our aim is to detect those old age problems at an early
stage before it becomes a big health risk and threat to our pets’
lives. With our brand new state-of-the-art laboratory, we can do
your pet’s blood test while you wait and have the results within
minutes,” explains owner and head vet Dr Heinrich Van Niekerk.
Hilton Vet Hospital can provide the most up to date treatment
for any of these old age health problems:
Joints: Signs of arthritis. Is your pet slow to get up? Limping
or slowing down? Kidneys: Is your pet drinking and urinating
more than usual? Heart: Any sign of coughing and getting tired
quicker? Hormones: Sudden weight loss or weight gain? Coat
changes? Teeth: Can you smell a bad breath or spot tartar on
the teeth? Lumps: Any abnormal growths visible? Diabetes:
High blood sugar.

SUNSET EVENTS will push on with
plans for a tavern at J-Shed after a
knock-back from Fremantle council,
but will consider scaling back to ease
residents’ concerns, says managing
director David Chitty.
Mr Chitty says the company is still
hopeful of a favourable ruling from the
WA Planning Commission, which has
final sa .
At Wednesday’s meeting, councillors
backed a committee recommendation to
e use unset s application despite sta
recommending conditional approval.
A note to be sent to the WAPC says
during a trial run, the company wasn’t
able to manage drunkenness and antisocial behaviour from concert-goers,
rubbish and the risks from people falling
o a nea b cli .
Promised community events hadn’t
lived up to expectations while “alcohol
was the major sales push” at events,
rather than a balanced mix of drinking/
eating.
Noise levels
“We’re obviously disappointed, but we
respect the council’s decision,” says Mr
Chitty.
Artists working next door to the
venue, and the Fremantle Inner City
Residents Association claim noise levels
at the four trial concerts reached up to
108dB and could have damaged people’s
ears.
FICRA also claims noise monitoring
didn’t take place at Marina Village where
esidents ould ha e been most a ected
by the concerts.
In a submission to the council, FICRA
convenor MaryRose Baker claimed “noise
levels vastly exceeded any permissible
level, resulting in not only extreme
discomfort to local artists and residents
but also the Roundhouse guides and
tourists.”
Mr Chitty denies the concerts exceeded
the relevant guidelines.
ll the o ce s o
eo loo ed at
the noise and recommended for it to be
approved,” he says.
“Sometimes council can go against that
recommendation which is what happened
last night.”
Mr Chitty doesn’t begrudge the
neighbouring residents and artists for
their complaints.
“I think they’ve got valid concerns. If
I lived there I’d want to be comfortable,
so I don’t have any issue with people
objecting”, he says.
“If there’s any issues with scale we’re
happy to have a conversation about that,
and we still are.”

East Freo drops fossils
by TRILOKESH CHANMUGAM
WA’S second-smallest local
government joined the fossil fuel
divestment movement this week.
East Fremantle’s move to dump banks
that invest in fossil fuels was prompted
by a petition signed by about 750
residents, which organisers Peta Bowden
and Dick Ounswort of 350.org believe
is one of the biggest the council’s ever
received.
“There is incredible strength of feeling
in the community about climate change,”
Ms Bowden told the Herald.
The petition called on the council to
pull its money out of Australia’s four big
banks and invest with those which avoid
dcompanies p ofiting om ossil uels.
“Whilst the divestment of council’s
investments (approx. $5million) from the
banks which support fossil fuel activities
ma not ha e a significant financial
impact, we feel it has much larger impact
as a social statement in our beliefs
towards climate change, and hope that it
may encourage other local governments
and businesses to follow suit,” mayor Jim
O’Neill said.

Fremantle-based Dutch artist Amok Island has used Leighton

THE Fremantle and Districts Model
Railway Association is looking for a
new home after being losing its lease
at the Fremantle Prison.
The association has been meeting in
the prison’s old blacksmith’s shop for 12
years, but as one of the prison’s oldest
buildings it’s in hot demand for tours and
is about to be renovated via an $80,000
federal grant. Train enthusiast and
association secretary Graeme Campbell
says they have to be out by September 4.
Mr Campbell says to pay the rent, the
association takes its meticulously crafted
railways, complete with landscapes and
mini towns, to shopping centres where
they’re a hit with kids. They have three
layouts, one of which is nine metres long,
and another that took them 10 years to
build.
t s not the fi st time the e had to
move, as originally they were based in
the Fremantle Train Station, but the rent
became too high to cope with.
Mr Campbell says they need enough
room to be able to stack their nine tables.
The prison works will include
a replacement roof and repairs to
roof plumbing and joinery, federal
environment minister Greg Hunt said.
“This funding will preserve and
enhance visitor experience at the site,
which is recognised for its Outstanding
Universal Value by UNESCO”.
Built in 1852, the workshop was the

A REFUGEE rally will be held at
Pioneer Reserve opposite Fremantle
train station today, Saturday June 25
at noon.
It will be followed up by a march
through the city tagged ‘Freo Safe
Harbour’ to recognise the local council’s
o cial statement o suppo t o e ugees
in the community.
Today’s rally brings International
Refugee Week to a close, and coordinator
Tom Lynch says “we urgently need to
defend every space … in which asylum
seekers and refugees can pursue their
lives in peace, safety and freedom”.
The walk also comes a week after
Greens immigration spokesperson Sarah
Hanson Young was in WA spruiking her
party’s refugee policy - which she says is
borrowed from the Liberal party of old.
The Greens want to increase
Australia’s refugee intake to 50,000,
including 10,000 places normally set
aside for skilled migrants. The party also
wants to invest in helping Indonesia and
Malaysia process more refugees through
their immigration camps, which are
estimated to hold about 14,000 people.
“The thing that is really interesting in
what the Greens are taking to the election
is that it is what worked under the Fraser
government,” Sen Hanson Young said.
“[Former prime minister Malcolm]
Fraser said we will have to fund the
investment up the line, then we can go
to other countries and say ‘we are going
to take this much and we want you to
take some’.” Initially reluctant to accept
Vietnamese refugees, Fraser ultimately
accepted 50,000 over the term of his
government - apparently under pressure
from the United States. They were
processed overseas.
“People saw the pathway and they got
into line,” says Sen Hanson Young.

So you thought
you couldn’t draw?
The word’s out! You can.
All that’s needed is some
practical information about
the brain and some fun
drawing exercises that allow
you to break out of what you
can now do and reconnect
with creativity that you
didn’t even know you had.
Jan Cross, founder of the
Extraordinary Mind Project,
said a primary job of your
brain is to very efficiently
have you repeat what you
already know exactly as you
already know it. Which is
good, otherwise you would
have to relearn how to walk
and talk each morning!
However it also means that
if you are a stick man level
drawer, for example, your
brain will maintain you

perfectly. Until you find out
how to intercept your stick

Vibrant colours
set Zinongo apart
by TRILOKESH CHANMUGAM
S
TRIKING coral-coloured
walls make 47 Lefroy
Road stand out from the
neighbou ing eaconsfield
houses, but it’s the vibrant
pottery inside which really sets
Zinongo gallery apart.
Fremantle’s longest-running
pottery studio and gallery is
owned by Njalikwa Chongwe,
a master ceramicist of Zambian
descent who regularly returns to
Africa to check in with artists of
his native Ngoni tribe.
Many years of working clay
as art and for daily use have
created some curious superstitions
in Ngoni culture, which Mr
hong e sa s a ects the enti e
country.
Zambian craftsmen are not
supposed to work until after
thei child s fi st teeth ha e come
through, and believe that you
shouldn’t laugh or smile while
making pots.
Mr Chongwe holds some of
his own superstitions: “If you talk
about the shape of the pot while
making it, the pot will crack. Don’t
let anyone see the pot until it is
fi ed because it ill in a iabl
slump.”
Drawing inspiration from
traditional potters has helped
Mr Chongwe’s art stay fresh and
exciting, he says.
“Many people assume that
Tonga or Ngoni pottery will all
be the same,” says Mr Chongwe.
ut a tists a e fie cel indi idual
within those groups.”
Zambian potters traditionally
hand mould clay into coils then
stack them in the desired shape,
using natural tools to pattern the
pots.
Mr Chongwe’s method is more
modern — he uses an electric
wheel, clay from the eastern
states and hand tools specificall
designed for trimming and

shaping.
Intending to give some of
his tools as gifts on a recent trip
to Zambia, Mr Chongwe was
su p ised to find local potte s
weren’t interested, having happily
depended on simple tools for
centuries.
Although the art in Zinongo
gallery is not strictly traditional,
it remains markedly African;
combining bright glazes with
earthy browns and using
traditional shapes such as the
calabash.
Mr Chongwe can turn a lump
of clay into a vase in minutes,
keeping up a leisurely chat the
whole time.
His glazing is also spectacular;
Mr Chongwe likes precise,
flambo ant st ipes hich gi e his
potte a distincti e finish.
A large chunk of Zinongo’s
business is composed of handcrafted wash basins ($300 - $450),
with many customers eager to add
life to their bathrooms.
The beautiful mugs, bowls,
plates, teapots and vases are also
popular as gifts.
Zinongo gallery is open on
Thursday, Friday and Saturday
between 10am and 5pm.

A “sum of all its parts”
Hidden Treasures is not just
about the music, but the
heritage-rich West End, Mr
Craddock says.
“I think the hero of this
festival is the architecture,” the
muso says surprisingly.
Fremantle festival guru Alex
Marshall agrees: “It’s a music
festival but it’s called Hidden
Treasures because it’s about
discovering buildings and place
as well.”
Showcasing 40 years of Freocentric music, well established
musos feature alongside up and
comers in a festival designed to

favourites – and discover new
ones.
“A couple of years ago I met
a friend at the Navy Club and he
introduced me to his daughter
– and his mother. It’s that that
makes Hidden Treasures not
about the bands, but about the
festival,” Mr Marshall says.
The location of some polling places in your local area may have changed
since the previous federal election.

Dear Herald,
We’ve been advertising with the Herald for over 5 years and
we often get a great response to our ad campaigns...
Just wanted to say thanks for doing such a great job on the
‘What’s New’ advert for us - that really got people through the door!
Myra and the whole team at the Herald made it all very easy and we
will definitely be using the Herald again to promote in the future

WE COULDN’T BELIEVE the
response we had from our ad
last week - it was overwhelming!
People were lining up at the door
to purchase our lamb loin chop

Friday Saturday and Monday
morning were so busy we couldn’t
keep up with the stock.
We have been advertising with the
Herald for many years and are very
happy with the one on one service
from Elin. Our ads always look great
and business has improved greatly.
Just wanted to say a big thank

The agent says very few homes come
up for sale: “People tend to move in
and stay for 20 years.”
Large homes, like this fullyrenovated beauty on The Ramble are
even rarer.
“They hold their value well because
of supply and demand – and people
want to be in the Applecross High
School area,” the agent says.
Built in 1986 the four-bedroom/twobathroom home has been renovated
by two lots of owners, including the

recently installed a new kitchen.

He’s the agent you want.
“We have engaged Frank’s services to sell our own home as well as an investment
property. We were extremely happy with both sales. Frank is a great negotiator
- works hard to get you the price you want and also the buyer the price they
want to pay. His communication with both parties is excellent and he’s
always available to talk when you call him. We would recommend
him to anyone looking for an honest and genuine real estate agent.”

uring the winter months, when
market conditions can be flat,
vendors often choose to hold off on
their selling plans until spring when days get
longer and flowers begin to bloom.
In “balanced” market conditions, this is
probably a reasonable strategy; an attractive
garden can add genuine value to a property
and there is a more positive atmosphere
about once winter ends. Certainly, the
residential rental market normally quietens
off during winter with notably fewer tenant
enquiries for vacant properties during the
cooler months of the year. REIWA statistics
shows that vacancy rates often move with
the seasons, even during high rental demand
periods.
properties with

The artificially stimulated market of
2009 and the recent market downturn have
muddled more recent statistics such that any
vacancy rate trend is overridden by stronger
market forces such as falling interest rates,
consumer confidence, population trends
and government policy. Similarly, property
owners tend to be less enthusiastic to move
during the winter months for reasons similar
to those displayed by tenants.
For sellers, however, broader market
conditions have far more impact on selling
cost a fortune.
There’s parking for four cars and two
storage areas, one with a mezzanine that
has been artist’s studio.
It’s a short stroll to Wireless Hill, and
Garden City, as well as the local primary
school, and the sought after Applecross
High is a four minute bike ride, or a 10
minute walk away.

outcomes than do the seasons. It would be
foolish to hold off selling in winter if the
market conditions were short on supply and
high on demand, particularly if future trends
indicated a move towards market parity.
Certainly, the current market conditions
indicate that sellers would be wise to
seriously consider selling now rather than
wait for spring. Supply levels have tapered
off recently falling below 15,000 listings
metro wide giving buyers less choice. Sellers
who collectively wait for spring could flood
the market putting pressure on selling times
and potentially prices.
It is apparent that any time of the year
can be a good time to sell, especially if you
are buying and selling in the same market
conditions and have realistic expectations
in relation to market values. Fremantle
properties can be gorgeously cosy in winter,
properties with great passive solar design and
northern orientation shine and, for buyers,
you’ll know if the roof leaks if inspecting
when raining.

June 25 - July 2, 2016
ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)
As the Sun makes his way through
Cancer, so your feeling side comes to
the fore. Even though you go at things like a bat out
of hell, you are generally driven by innocent enquiry,
not by anything at all dubious. Your quest for liberation
continues, but is presently driven in an emotional way.
TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)
Venus is moving through Cancer. She is
making you ponder the nature of emotional
commitment and emotional engagement. You know
full well that unless you engage with a fullness of
feeling, neither you, nor anybody you engage with, is
going to be satisfied. Come way out of your shell.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)
The Sun is moving through Cancer.
Life is reinforcing your sense of who
you are. It should be the simplest thing in the world to
be comfortable in our own skin, yet often if becomes
inordinately difficult. Be curious and open to your own
inner world. Value all that is surfacing in there.
CANCER (June 22 – July 22)
Though there are many influences
coming your way that seem hell-bent on
distracting you and taking you up and away from all
that matters, you will find yourself coming back again
and again to your point of focus. Trust that you are
basically on track, even if your emotions drift a little.
LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)
The Sun’s journey through Cancer
adds a touch of pathos to your week.
Life will seem a little more emotional and theatrical.
This does you no harm at all. The inability to feel is
a disease, and you were on the verge of coming
down with it. et to know your authentic emotional
resources.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
Communication is proving to be a little
tricky. It is possible to bounce around with
people and have heaps of fun, and yet feel strangely
dissatisfied. This is because there is another layer of
exposure and honesty available - and you need to
figure out how to tap into it. Connection is expansion.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
Venus is travelling through Cancer this
week. The Sun is in Cancer too. You can
expect this to cause you to dive down into a rock-pool
of emotion. You will be more focussed on your feelings
than usual. Venus presently represents that part of you
that is only satisfied if your feelings are honoured.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)
It has done you no harm to have the
waters of your emotion oxygenated
by a dose of playfulness, wit and wonder. This is exactly
what the emini Sun has done to you. He took you by
the hand and invited you to come out of your place of
rest, and dance. Now, from this place, dive deep.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Saturn is making his presence felt in the
theatre of relationship. Saturn invites us to
let go of our borrowed version of morality and instead
find our own values and our own wisdom the wisdom
of our essence. Trying to control other people’s ways
of seeing doesn’t work. Be patient. Listen.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
Use all your awareness and interest to
see exactly where life sheds old skin
and then renews itself, where it clears out dead wood
and rejuvenates itself. Ask yourself if you can allow the
same process to unfold in your being, smoothly and
flowingly. Transformation is slow and deep. Trust it.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
This is a philosophic time. Your love of
wisdom is due to kick in. The Cancerian
Sun gives you the depth and fluidity required, to
ponder the deep underlying issues present in your life,
in imaginative, liberating ways. A powerful process of
change is at play. Be curious. Keep your eyes fresh.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
To go out into the world at large and
express yourself unashamedly, would
be a healing thing to do. Follow your deep currents
of feeling into the world of action. Put procedures in
place. It’s not enough to be entranced by beautiful
stories. They need to be performed, as well as written
and told.

■ Win one of two double passes to the July 9 show at The Bird, Northbridge
A record for anyone who has ever changed
cities, countries, houses or even just their
mind, Rest & Relocation is the second
album proper for Melbourne based lyrical
indie-pop purveyors Split Seconds.
Much loved for their driving, harmonic
pop, best exemplified in previous singles
‘Bed Down, Top Floor’ and ‘Halfway There’,
Split Seconds took the plunge in 2012 by
relocating from Perth to Melbourne. As is
often the case, the sea change provided
mixed results. Led by WAMI winning
vocalist Sean Pollard, they said goodbye to
two members (one back to Perth and the
other to the world of sub continental cricket
writing), welcomed one (Leicester bred
Barrie Wilson, formerly of UK based Rough
Trade alumni Milk White, White Teeth) and
channelled their energies into building an
ambitious home studio in the inner north
songwriters haven of Brunswick.
Leaning on their trademark mix of dry
melodies, soaring guitar work and deft
production choices, the resultant album is a
step up on every front. Kicking off with first
single ‘Relocation Blues’, it is immediately
apparent that the band isn’t pulling any
punches lyrically or sonically. Expanding
their influences to include the likes of Kurt
Vile and Parquet Courts while still keeping
their eye on favourites Paul Kelly, The
Go-Betweens and Blur, songs like ‘Any
Minute Now’ and ‘Meet Me After Work’ are
pulsating gems while closer ‘She Hit You’
takes a soul groove and wraps it around a
Perth summer. Known for their consistency,
Split Seconds have exceeded lofty
expectations with Rest & Relocation.

Apart from getting local businesses such as San
Churro, the National Hotel and Eat Street Paella
holding pop-ups on the Esplanade, BID manager
Jenny Marslen says they’ve got a number of
initiatives to get people around Fremantle.
The big one is the #Freo_penguintrail, with 25
of the little critters in shop windows around town,
along with three wintery igloos. Kids are being
challenged to find them using maps and clues.
And keep your eyes out for the three funky
igloos, which were made from milk cartons donated
by local businesses, which will help celebrate Plastic
Free July
“There will also be a free “Frozen” bouncy castle
from 10am to 2pm each day in Kings Square during
the school holidays, Ms Marslen said.
A winter windows competition for the best
street, best individual and a peoples choice award
will keep local traders busy.

Moved to a new location on
the other side of the Esplanade
Reserve, the festival has a twostorey marquee with a toboggan
run which should be a great hit
with adults and kids alike.
The giant pop-up inflatable
slide is back, while people can also
jump into the Tube Dudes to roll
themselves around the park to the
finish line.
For mum and dad there’s a
bigger pop-up bar than ever, run
by the fabulous Karl Bullers and
his team from the National Hotel.
There’s also DJs, bands and
family-friendly entertainment on
Friday and Saturday nights.
And, of course, skating on
Perth’s only outdoor ice rink
wouldn’t be the same for the
littlies without those incredibly
cute little penguins to help them
along.
It’s all running until July 17,
and with the new location being on
the Italian Club car park, the mud
of last year will only be a memory.
• $100 prize money to spend in
Fremantle
• Organic Body Care Pack & Gift
voucher from Endota Spa
• Movie tickets
• 2 x $50 gift vouchers
Here’s a fair-minded penguin with a taste for
fashion from around the world.
Unique jewellery and gifts make this one
happy penguin.
Find this penguin chilling outside on a deck
chair or warming up with the sweet snowflakes
inside.
Italian fashion keeps this little pinguino
warm in European style.
