In March, 1845, St. Catharines becomes a corporate town governed by a Board of Police, by virtue
of 8 Vic. C. 63 (29 March).

Corporations Act know as ‘the Baldwin Municipal Act’ 12 Vic. C. 81 (30 May, 1849).
Note: By virtue of a change in 1817 of the 1793 legislation (33 Geo.III c.2) elections were to be held on the first Monday
in January of each year. Two-day elections were common.
Town Council
The President is now called the Mayor. The mayor and reeves are chosen from among the elected aldermen. The first
meeting in the new Town Hall Municipal Offices took place on January 29, 1850.
