TURNING POST-CONSUMER
MATERIAL INTO NEW PRODUCTS
RECYCLING CHAMPIONS
for the PVC-U sector
Merritt Plastics has been leading the way in PVC-U waste recycling for more than
15 years. Our closed-loop recycling system means that not only do we recycle
old PVC-U and off-cuts from fabrication processes, but we also turn it back into
new extruded plastic products – all at the same site. That way we keep PVC-U
out of landfill sites and in productive use for potentially hundreds of years.
MAJOR INVESTMENT IN PVC-U RECYCLING
We have invested £2.5m in enlarging and upgrading our PVC-U recycling
plant at Ilkeston, Derbyshire. This plant now has the capacity to recycle 20,000
tonnes of old PVC-U windows per year, as well as 2,400 tonnes of PVC-U offcuts. This state-of-the-art recycling facility provides a fast, efficient, accurate
waste-processing service for waste companies, waste transfer stations,
window fabricators, specifiers and local authorities across the UK.
The recycling facility is at the heart of our ‘closed-loop’ recycling
process, which turns old window frames and other PVC-U waste
into new products – keeping PVC-U in perpetual use.

NOTTINGHAM CITY HOMES
SCORES AN ‘A’ FOR RECYCLING
Merritt Plastics, together with partners from parent company Eurocell,
secured a £13 million contract with Nottingham City Homes to supply ‘A’rated windows to 15,300 properties, using advanced PVC-U window profiles.
A cost-effective ‘A’-rated windows solution was developed for the project,
which exceeded the client brief requirements and gave residents all the
thermal efficiency benefits of the highest possible Window Energy Rating.
To deliver maximum sustainability for this contract, the 100,000 old window
frames were recycled at our recycling plant in Ilkeston. The material was then
reground to make PVC-U Thermal Inserts for the new ‘A’-rated windows, fitted
to the same properties. More than 90% of all waste material from site was
recycled – a fantastic achievement considering the scale of the project.
Fitting the new windows and doors will reduce current carbon emissions across
the City of Nottingham by around three million kilograms each year and help
residents save an average of £80-100 per household on annual fuel bills.
Mark Johnson, Director of
Property Services, Nottingham
City Homes, commented:
“Our Secure Warm Modern
project is helping us to improve
thousands of council homes
across the city. Eurocell and
Nationwide Windows are
contractors that are helping us to
make this happen, providing high
quality service and materials.
The innovative use of ‘A’ rated
windows means that our residents
are receiving the best low carbon
technologies available.”

WHAT WE RECYCLE
The brand new enlarged Merritt Plastics recycling plant can recycle
more than 22,000 tonnes of PVC-U every year, including 20,000
tonnes of post-consumer windows and door frames and 2,400
tonnes of off-cuts and waste from PVC-U fabrication processes
We need a regular supply of PVC-U waste
material, which will be recycled into new
products, keeping non-biodegradable plastic
out of landfill and putting it back into productive
use. So – whether you are a fabricator, profiles
manufacturer, waste processing plant, skip
hire company or waste transfer station – if
you are looking for an environmentally
responsible and profitable way to dispose of
your post-consumer frames or production
offcuts, then Merritt Plastics has the answer.

extruded plastic products, manufactured

Made & recycled
in Derbyshire
Most of the feedstock used to manufacture our products is
recycled PVC-U from our own plant, but we also extrude using
virgin polymers and blends of recycled and virgin material.
Some products, such as frame-forming cavity closers, are
manufactured entirely from recycled materials. Our commercial
vehicle door seals use 100% recycled PVC-U for the rigid
section and virgin PVC-U for the flexible flipper section.
