COMMUNION FOR THE
THOSE UNABLE TO
ATTEND CHURCH
If you or someone you
know cannot come to
Mass because of illness
or disability, our Parish
has trained C.A.R.E. Ministers who can bring you communion and
pray with you once a week. There are
approximately 30 individuals currently
being served by the ministry at home.
Spouses can bring communion to their
loved ones if they wish, but must have a
brief training session and have a pyx to
carry the Eucharist.
Fr. Larry is also available upon request to
provide the anointing of the sick to those at
home or in a care facility.
To arrange a communion or anointing visit,
please call Judy Rossman at C.A.R.E.
Ministry at 825-9611, x104.

R.C.I.A./ADULT EDUCATION –
TEAM FORMATION
We are beginning to form the 2014-2015 R.C.I.A. team. Preparation
of adult candidates for Baptism, First Eucharist, and Confirmation
is the responsibility of the entire community. Although many members of last year’s team are returning, we need more help. If you are
willing to consider joining us in this effort as a catechist or sponsor
or by preparing snacks for a meeting, please contact either Greg
and Shirley Nelson (520-465-5690) or Tim and Nancy Mosman (520825-2736).

This is also the process for you.
The first meeting will be held on October 8. Further information is
available through Greg and Shirley Nelson (520-465-5690) or Tim
and Nancy Mosman (520-825-2736).
COULD YOU USE A COMPASSIONATE
LISTENER WHO MEETS WITH YOU
REGULARLY?
Stephen Ministers are members of the parish who
listen, care, encourage and provide emotional and
spiritual support to people who are facing a crisis or
going through tough times. The care you will receive is
confidential, free and helpful. Santa Catalina has 15
Stephen Ministers who are available to provide this one to one
Christian care to those in our parish and in the community. For
more information, call Judy Rossman, at 825-9611, x104.

Yasinski has quickly become one of

LIFE TEEN GOSPEL REFLECTION - (MATTHEW 14:22-33)
Many times in my life I can think of how difficult it is to get up and do something again after I have already failed.
Whether it is not making the team, doing poorly on a test, or embarrassing myself while speaking in front of others, it
can be really hard to try again after being turned away. The woman in the Gospel has no problem asking again and
again for what she wants. She is turned away, and no sooner is again pleading for help. Her constant persistence, even
after she has been denied, is something I really admire and need to do more myself. Also the way this women has
complete confidence in Jesus reminds me that I am not the best at everything. Many times I need to stop, think outside
myself and remember to put my trust in God.

ST. BERNARD
FEAST DAY: AUGUST 20
Western Europe's “man of
the twelfth century,” without doubt or controversy, has to be
Bernard of Clairvaux. Adviser of
popes, preacher of the Second Crusade,
defender of the faith, healer of a
schism, reformer of a monastic Order,
Scripture scholar, theologian and eloquent preacher: any one of these titles
would distinguish an ordinary man.
Yet Bernard was all of these—and he
still retained a burning desire to return
to the hidden monastic life of his
younger days.
In the year 1111, at the age of 20, Bernard left his home to join the monastic
community of Citeaux. His five brothers, two uncles and 30 friends followed
him into the monastery. Within four
years a dying community had recovered enough vitality to establish a new
house. His ability as arbitrator and
counselor became widely known. The
Holy See prevailed on Bernard to

preach the Second Crusade. The ideals
of the men and their leaders, however,
were not those of Abbot Bernard, and
the project ended as a complete military and moral disaster.
Bernard felt responsible for the degenerative effects of the crusade. This
heavy burden possibly hastened his
death, which came August 20, 1153.

THURSDAYS, SEPTEMBER 4—OCTOBER 9
This fall, we will conclude the Bible study program we have been using
for the past five years. It is from Franciscan Communications.
During the 90-minute class period, we will again use the material of

delightful lectures. This time, they will cover the following topics:
∗ Religious life in Jesus' day
∗ The symbolism and use of the various gates in the walls around
Jerusalem
∗ The significance of the holy city of Jerusalem
∗ The political situation in Palestine in Jesus' time
∗ What daily life in Judea was like for Jesus and his family
∗ The roles of Jesus as carpenter, rabbi, and Messiah
The cost of the classes is .50 per week for materials. Please call the parish
office to register so sufficient amounts of materials can be prepared.
Everyone is welcome to attend. Bring a friend!

INSIDE OR OUTSIDE?
The Jesus we meet in today’s Gospel seems a bit
stand-offish. He appears at first to ignore the
Canaanite woman’s pleas to heal her child! Matthew
seems to be suggesting that, until this point in his
ministry, Jesus himself thought that his mission was only to the
Jewish people. When he is confronted by a Canaanite, and a woman
at that, he seems baffled. Her sheer determination to make him listen
ensures that he cannot continue to ignore her. More importantly,
Jesus acknowledges that her faith in him is equal to that of any of the
Jewish people he has met so far. In the end, Jesus praises her faith
and heals her daughter. Matthew was writing his Gospel for a
community of Jewish Christians who had identified Jesus as the
Messiah—the One promised by God to generations of the Jewish
people. They were aware, however, that the Christian faith was
attracting people of other races and other religions. They would,
inevitably, have been struggling to work out how this fit with all the
prophecies of the Hebrew scriptures that foretold a Messiah who was
destined to save Israel. The meeting between Jesus and the Canaanite
woman offers them a clue about how to understand this situation.
When Jesus is challenged to heal the outsider, his initial reaction is to
refuse; but then he sees her great faith, and this far outweighs the fact
that she does not belong to the people he primarily came to save. In
this story the new Jewish Christian community must have found help
to see that their initial reluctance to admit outsiders was understandable, and then to recognize that God plants faith in others too—and
that it is faith rather than background that opens the doors into the
Kingdom.
