Shout Out to Grove Park Elementary!
Congratulations to all the students and staff at Grove Park Elementary!! We are ranked 2nd out
of 100 schools on the American Reading Company National Honor Roll!! reported Anita Choim,
Curriculum Facilitator. “We are being ranked on whether our students are on target for reading
“steps” every day . One step equals 15 minutes read. Students read for 2 steps at school and 2 steps at
home each night. As of today, we have 98.2% of our students on target. Our target for today is 114
steps read. Being ranked 2 is awesome because we were never there last year! Our students and
teachers have worked extremely hard to make reading a priority at our school.” GREAT JOB GPE!

Shout Out Times Two for
North Graham!
Shout Out to North Graham
Parents! From Charlotte LeeRussell, technology teacher and
webmaster for the Cardinals: A
certificate celebration on
September 30, 2011 in the North
Graham Elementary School
computer lab was the
culmination of six weeks of
hands on practice and learning
by parents of North Graham
students. North Graham is
partnering with Alamance
Community College (ACC) and offering computer classes to parents of our students (many of
the parents received the classes for
free).
Sixteen parents received a computer
basic skills certificate through the
community college. The classes were
held in the evenings from 6:008:00pm. Many of the North Graham
students accompanied their parents
and worked on computer skills while
their parents were in class.
Charlotte was the organizer/liaison
with Alamance Community College.
She said “Students, parents, and
teachers need to learn computer skills to succeed in the 21st century”. Margaret Rogers, ACC
Continuing Education HRD Coordinator along with instructor Paulette Powell were instrumental
in the success of the well attended parent computer classes. Parents learned computer skills
such as Microsoft Word and Paint. North Graham Principal Greg Holland said “It is important to
reach out to families and truly be a community school.”
Alamance Community College and North Graham plan to offer another set of computer classes
for parents next semester.

Shout Out to Woodlawn Middle and Rachel’s Challenge! Kimberly Yarborough,
school social worker at WOMS let me know that they have managed to reschedule their
parent/community outreach event with Rachel’s Challenge. Remember it got cancelled back in
September when we had the tornado warning and torrential rain? Please mark this date and
time on your calendar and tell your friends about this great free opportunity.
“Our Rachel’s Challenge Program has been rescheduled for October 12th at 7 pm. It will be held
at Eastern’s High School Auditorium. Everyone is invited to attend.”
Shout Out to the Mayor of Mebane and Garrett's 2nd grader Gators!
Webmistress at Garrett, Kris L’Heureux sent in
information about this fun event: “Mayor Glendel
Stephenson of Mebane met the "2nd gators"
Tuesday, Oct. 4th to explain his role in the local
community. The students are learning about
communities and what it means to be a
responsible citizen. The mayor discussed what his
job entails, explained how new businesses are
looking at coming to Mebane, and then took
questions from the students.
He bravely addressed the real issues crucial to
local 2nd grade concerns: "Have you tried the
drink machine at the new Wendy's?"
Shout out to the ABSS What’s After High School? Program and the 3rd annual
Success by Design College Access Conference!

Shout Out to Hawfields AYLA and
Mad Hatter Day! AYLA (Alamance Youth
Leadership Academy) advisor Shelley
Beckman at Hawfields said the group’s Mad
Hatter event was a great success. Students
paid $1 to wear a hat to school last Friday to
raise funds to purchase new hats for children
with cancer. What a great leadership
activity—as you can see by the pictures, the
members advertised the event and had great
participation. Great job, Huskies!
Shout Out to ABSS High Schools!
Sabre Robinson shared this great news yesterday: The North Carolina Association for Scholastic
Activities is proud to announce the tenth school system in North Carolina to register all their
high schools for NCASA membership. Alamance-Burlington School System has registered all
eight high schools for NCASA membership. They join 49 other schools already registered earlier
this season. Well over one hundred schools are expected to register for membership and
compete for the NCASA Scholastic Cup, awarded to the best high school in North Carolina.
NCASA membership enables these schools to participate in all our competitions at no additional
charge. NCASA scholastic competitions include Quiz Bowl and the North Carolina Glee Club

Shout Out to NGE and Arts Education!
Joy Rust from NGE sent this information about an interesting event for NGE students: “On
October 12 fifth graders from North Graham will visit "Beyond the Frame: Impressionism
Revisited, Sculptures by J. Seward Johnson" at the Captain White House in Graham. Sponsored
by the Alamance Arts Council and Proponent Federal Credit Union, the exhibit is in Graham
through October 31. In addition to activities in the classroom, teachers across the curriculum
will also have activities relating to the exhibit. Fourth and fifth grade AIG students, under the
direction of Mrs. Inez Bostic, have prepared a hallway exhibit on impressionism as part of the
school's preparation for the field trip. Students will use digital photography and film to record
the visit, and then create presentations using movies, photography, words and music to reflect
upon the exhibit. Special thanks to the Alamance Arts Council for covering the cost of
transportation through a grant.”
If you haven’t visited the exhibit yet, you need to go—it is awesome.

Shout Out to Garrett's Staff, P.T.O., and the Mebane McDonalds crew for a
WONDERFUL McTeacher's Night!
Kris L’Heureux sent in this “appetizing”
story: “The Garrett Gators took a shift
at the counter, drive-through window,
and eating area this Tuesday night for a
"FUN"draising opportunity!”
“Everyone has a new appreciation for
fast food workers, and Gator families
really showed their support :) A special
thank you to the McDonald's staff
members who were SO patient
teaching us teachers what to do!”
I don’t know about you, but I’d gladly take
my turn running the ice cream machine if I
could eat all of my mistakes.

Shout Out to
Cummings High
and the
Advanced Food
Class Students!
Thanks to teacher
Tiffanie King, the
Cavaliers are “in the
money’! Career
Development
Coordinator Lindsey
Criss sent this news:
“Cummings High
School is proud to
announce that
Tiffanie King and her
Advanced Foods
class won a donation
from the Wal-Mart
Foundation. Mr. Aaron Tolliver from the Graham-Hopedale Wal-Mart store came to present the “big
check” to Ms. King, Principal Alexander, and the class. Ms. King’s class will use the donation to fund
various service projects throughout the community. Way to go Cavaliers!”
Shout Out to our ABSS United Way Campaign! We kicked off our
district-wide United Way campaign on Tuesday this week, and our wonderful campaign
coordinators have wasted no time in getting things rockin’. In case you haven’t heard, The
Village Grill and Blue Ribbon Diner are challenging everyone to make change in our community
by supporting the United Way of Alamance campaign. Anyone who did not give to UW last
year, but gives a minimum of $15 this year, or anyone who gives $15 more dollars than they did
last year, will receive 3 $5 gift cards good for either restaurant at the end of the campaign! This
is a huge incentive to help us reach our district-wide goal. Help us support our community by
making a donation to the United Way campaign at your site.
Lori Bryan has been busy trying to keep up with our coordinators and all that they are doing to
support our community. Here’s what she has to report so far:
Vanessa and Yvette from Maintenance get a big Whooo! Hooo! They are the first to turn in a campaign
envelope! Stephanie Britt from Southern Middle was close behind, turning in Tiger money!
Tiffany Cheshire of NGE-has starting calling on local restaurants for donations of gift cards and plans to
make it a tier effect for prizes for NGE employees who make donations.

John Heath from Williams says, “We’ve already reached 20% of our goal and our SGA will be heading up
the Miles of Pennies campaign!”
Vicky Hayes of Turrentine says she will be e-promoting the Give $15 Get $15 gift cards that UW is
offering.
Caroline Bolton from Elon Elementary is a real “go-getter”. She started collecting gift cards for prizes
before we even launched our district campaign!
Darrell Thomas turned in a big fat employee donation envelope today from E. M. Holt. His school has
already exceeded their goal, and it’s only been 2 days into the campaign! Way to go, Wildcats!
Please Shout it Out to your site campaign coordinator. They are working hard on behalf of our entire
community and would appreciate a few words of encouragement and your support:
