To preserve the historically significant Dayton House, interpret the
community’s cultural and social history as told through the lives of the

Retirement beckons Becky Schilling
It was with reluctance that the Historic Dayton House's Board of Directors accepted Becky Schilling's resignation, effective Dec. 31,
2011. Becky, who served faithfully as Historic Dayton House Manager
since October 2005, was ready to make more time in her life for a little
"rest and relaxation," as well as free time for volunteer opportunities and
visits to her two adorable granddaughters in Georgia.
Becky was always a most gracious hostess for House events; her picture
may appear next to the word "Hospitality" in the dictionary! She was also
an effective and pleasant representative of the House to the greater community. Her lovely smile will certainly be missed, but she remains a
staunch supporter of the Historic Dayton House, as well as an active volunteer, so we are delighted that her retirement means only a little less of her presence but not a
complete absence of her charm and personality.
The Board sincerely thanks Becky for her 6+ years of dedicated
work and service to the Historic Dayton House.
In this December 2010 photo, Becky Schilling takes a moment for a photo
with two Dayton House Volunteers. Schillings’ warm and engaging style drew
many volunteers, young and old alike, to the Historic Dayton House’s extended
family.

Volunteers
The Historic Dayton House owes
much to its volunteers
_________________
Since its beginning, the Historic
Dayton House has been fortunate
to have a contingency of wonderful
volunteers. The House continues to
recruit new volunteers, as well as
invite those from the past, to join in
keeping the House vibrant and farreaching.
Some of the volunteer opportunities
include assisting in the following
ways:
tour guide, decorating,
flower care, lawn care, tea parties,
spring cleaning, bartending, house
events, serving on a committee.
If you have an idea for an event or
would like to help out at the House
in your own, unique way, please let
us know.

New display cases at Dayton House
Two new display cases have been installed at the house. The beautiful
cherry wood cases provide a secure
environment for the display of historical and significant importance to the
house. The cases were purchased
through a grant award from the Minnesota Historical Society.
Minnesota Historical and Cultural
Heritage Grants are made possible by
the Minnesota Legislature from the
Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund created with passage of the Clean Water, Land and Legacy
Amendment to the Minnesota Constitution in November 2008.
The grants are awarded to support projects of enduring value
for the cause of history and historic preservation across the
state. www.mnhs.org
Dayton’s Dicta
"I wish to bid you a hearty 'God Speed' in
your new venture. It is no easy task...but
in your hands I expect it will be a success
in every sense of the word--and I am more
anxious that it should be a success along
the lines of character building for the
Northwest than simply along financial
lines. You have come into a great inheritance--and a tremendous responsibility.
You will be wielders of public opinion,
and it is for you to see that your herculean blows shall always be on the side of
right."
--George Draper Dayton, in a circa 1907
letter to an editor friend undertaking a
new journalistic responsibility
Area students assist with preservation project
In December, a dozen students from the Luverne High
School Photography class visited the Historic Dayton
House. Their mission was to take photographs of the details of the house furnishings. Hundreds of images were
captured in photos that day and will be saved in an electronic catalog for archival and research purposes.
The photo on the right is an example of some of the intricate
details to be found in the furnishings at the Dayton House.
Welcome to our new staff!
In the wake of Becky Schilling's recent retirement, two new part-time staff members have become part of the Historic
Dayton House.
Meredith Stanton Vaselaar joined the House in the role of House Manager/Business Coordinator in early November. Meredith also works part-time at the Adrian branch of the Nobles County Library. She holds a degree from Southwest State University, Marshall, and has past experience with grant writing, historic organizations and journalism, among
other areas. She lives north of Adrian with her husband, Eric, a Minnesota State Trooper; they have three children, the
youngest of whom, Rona, will graduate this spring from Luverne High School.
Anna Dopheide came on board Feb. 20, to serve as the House's Event Coordinator and Guest Suite Coordinator. A
graduate of Worthington High School and the Le Cordon Bleu Scottsdale Culinary Institute, Anna brings a good deal
of food and banquet experience to the House. Anna is married to Kyle Dopheide; they have one son, Kade, and are expecting their second child early next fall.
Calling all members:
