Low Voltage Solutions CLIMATE CONTROL Medium Voltage – Transformers & Switchgear 9 Power Quality Solutions Voltage fluctuations, power failures, overvoltage events and transients account for nearly 50% of all power interruptions within the electrical network. These can affect the quality of the supply to the data centre causing damage to sensitive equipment leading to downtime, data loss plus repair and maintenance costs which results in heavy economic losses for data centre operators. Through a cascade approach to power quality, data centre operators and facility management teams can mitigate their risk to both internal and external downtime caused by the instability within the electrical network. It is critical during the design stage of the data centre that the appropriate power quality protective solutions are built into the wider data centre solution to ensure longevity, scalability and reducing future capital costs and investment. 10 Electricity supplied KVAr Power Factor Correction In conjunction with management of power factor is the control of harmonic generation. Harmonics in the mains supply can adversely affect any electrical equipment. An electrical system supplies power to loads by delivering current at the fundamental frequency. Only fundamental frequency current can provide real power. Current delivered at harmonic frequencies do not deliver any real power to the load. The percentage of harmonics in a waveform is called THD (total harmonic distortion) and can be further broken up into THVD (total harmonic voltage distortion) and THID (total harmonic current distortion). As the THVD and THID increases, the efficiency of the system is greatly reduced. Most electrical equipment used in data centres today are defined as ‘non-linear loads’ and hence will generate by their design topology, a high level of harmonics. NHP can provide solutions for both power factor correction and harmonic mitigation through various techniques and solutions to suit your exact requirements. SERVICES AND TRAINING One very important aspect of improving quality of supply is the control of power factor. Low power factor means poor electrical efficiency. The lower the power factor, the higher the apparent power drawn from the distribution network. This means that the supply company must install larger generation capacity, larger size transmission lines and cables, transformers and other distribution system devices, which otherwise would not be necessary. This results Inductive Load PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE Data centres contain extremely sensitive devices which rely on the quality of electrical power to perform at their peak operating characteristics. Improper grounding, lightning events and internal transient events can lead to unforeseen downtime which can be mitigated by the installation of suitable lighting, surge and grounding system being installed. The quality of the electrical power reaching critical data centre components will significantly affect the performance and reliability of the data centre. With such a wide array of electrical components within a data centre installation, various power conditioning solutions can be implemented within the data centre installation to decrease operating costs, reduce maintenance and maintain uptime. S RENEWABLE ENERGY Much like a coordinated power distribution system which requires selectivity and cascade studies to take place and select the correct components, NHP will select the right solution for your lighting, surge and grounding systems requirements. P Q ENERGY MANAGEMENT Whilst lightning protection will provide protection from direct lightning strikes, the transient effects may further affect data centre operation, efficiencies and long term maintenance/repair costs. By utilising a branched approach to surge protection throughout the facility and the right surge protection technology, you can be assured of a protected network with maximum uptime availability. Power conditioning Lightning, surge & grounding systems KW CLIMATE CONTROL The installation of a modular UPS systems to suit the required tiered data centre infrastructure is the linchpin in ensuring that the data centre electrical infrastructure will remain online and generate revenue. UPS solutions are a custom requirement based on the data centres’ physical arrangement to meet specific performance requirements. NHP can provide design assistance, product selection and ongoing maintenance support for your UPS needs. in much higher capital expenditures and operating costs for the Electricity Supply Company, which in many cases is passed on to the consumer in the form of higher tariff rates. POWER QUALITY Many interruption events which occur on the electrical network today are very short and are in most instances largely ignored. The effects on business and commercial businesses are immaterial to an end user. In the case of a sensitive data centre operation however which requires high uptime and low fault tolerance, these electrical network events can lead to disturbances within the sensitive IT infrastructure. Installation of external surge protection in the form of lighting rods and detection systems will immediately assist with mitigating the effects of external lightning affecting a data centre facility. Mounted correctly and with an appropriate grounding system dangerous currents generated by a lightning strike are safely managed to ground preventing damage to data centre infrastructure. POWER DISTRIBUTION & PROTECTION Interruptible Power Supplies (UPS) 11 Climate Control Demand for energy efficient operations is rapidly becoming a key data centre issue. The more energy efficient the data centre, the lower the operational costs for your organisation. As data centre cooling systems contribute approximately 50% of your total data centre energy consumption, a clear strategy is required to ensure that your facility’s cooling system is operating effectively and efficiently as possible. Our energy efficient precision air-conditioning systems cut the power consumption of your data centre by up to 40 %. To support the ever changing data centre environment and to strive for maximum operational efficiency your cooling system infrastructure requires continual monitoring and management over the life of the data centre. NHP will assist in assessing these areas by collaborating with you to implement a tailor-made strategy of measuring, analysing, reporting and resolving your data centre cooling systems. 12 Air-conditioning 54% Greater effectiveness through precise air conduction and even power distribution To ensure that the cooled air gets to where it is needed, professional planning of the air conduction and careful configuration of the server racks is part of every good climate control concept. Hot and cold aisles, raised floors and cover panels convey the cooled air to the computer with precision. For example, particularly economical systems make use of closed air circuits, which feed the waste heat from the server racks directly back to the air conditioning unit via closed air ducts. With Direct Free Cooling, conditioned ambient air below 18 °C is used to keep the data centre cool. With this cooling method, a large volume of ambient air enters the rooms, so that extended temperature and humidity tolerances must be permitted. If the ambient temperature rises above 18 °C, either an integrated DX system with compressors or a separate chiller assumes the task of cooling the data centre, depending on the air-conditioning solution that is installed. §§ §§ §§ §§ §§ SERVICES AND TRAINING From 75-150kW Lower capital investment than with conventional Indirect Free Cooling systems Excellent system scalability – “Build as you grow!” Modular design Drastically lower energy consumption than all conventional systems PHYSICAL INFRASTRUCTURE Direct Free Cooling – the next generation solution of data centre climate control RENEWABLE ENERGY With data centre cooling costs accounting for over 50% of total data centre energy usage, the correct selection of the right system is critical to ensure long term cost savings and reducing annual operating costs. NHP’s range of energy efficient precision air-conditioning systems cut the power consumption of your data centre by up to 40%. Let NHP help you reduce your energy costs and invest in the future. Operation of cooling compressors and fans in the air-conditioning system is particularly energy intensive. Electronic control improves the response in changing load conditions, while additional cooling with indirect free cooling keeps the running time of the compressor to a minimum. ENERGY MANAGEMENT 46% Direct free cooling CLIMATE CONTROL IT/UPS/Lighting Economical precision air-conditioning systems also make use of cool outside air for indirect cooling of the data centre. Modern control electronics only switch on energy intensive compressor cooling when really necessary. It continuously monitors the climate in the data centre and selects the optimum operating mode in no time. POWER QUALITY Data centres run 365 days a year. Their tightly packed server racks generate ever increasing computing power in an ever decreasing area – power that is almost entirely converted into heat. Climate control ensures reliable operation. It conveys heat outside right away. But then, the airconditioning in data centres devours a huge amount of electricity. In the worst cases, it uses more than half of the energy supplied to the data centre. Greater efficiency thanks to free cooling with outside air. POWER DISTRIBUTION & PROTECTION NHP have the solution for your complete needs in a data centre cooling environment. Whether it be rack cooling solutions, CRAC units, chiller systems NHP have the answer. 13 Energy Management As technology evolves and equipment efficiencies rise, combined with the ongoing focus on energy consumption and reduction strategies - management of your Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) will become more important than ever.
