Prof. Yizhi Liu
State Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center,
Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou 510060, Guangdong, P.R. China
Yizhi Liu, M.D., Ph.D. is a Distinct Professor of Ophthalmology & Visual Science, and Director
of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University. He is currently serving as the
standing committee member of Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), the VicePresident of the Chinese Ophthalmological Society (COS), the Deputy Director of the
Cataract and Intraocular Lenses Division of COS, and a committee member of the
Guangdong Ophthalmological Society.
Dr. Liu’s research focuses on the molecular architectures controlling ocular stem cells’ selfrenewal and differentiation, and how these stem cells affect homeostasis and senescence of
cornea, lens and retina, as well as the genomic and epigenetic mechanisms of cataract and

many other age-related eye diseases. He has published over one hundred research articles
and case reports in leading scientific journals such as Nature, Science, New England Journal of Medicine and
PNAS. As principal investigator, he has received multiple grants from the National Basic Research Program of
China, the Chinese Ministry of Health Key Clinical Program, the Chinese National Natural Science Foundation and
the Natural Science Foundation’s Key Program in Guangdong. As a clinical ophthalmologist, he is recognized as
one of the pioneer ophthalmologists in China who perform phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation. He
has so far carried out approximately 200,000 surgical operations for cataract patients.
Dr. Liu is the recipient of numerous awards, including the National Award for Science and Technology Progress,
Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Award, Arthur Lim Award by Asia-Pacific Academy of
Ophthalmology (APAO), Chinese Young Science and Technology Award, National Youth Star of Medical Science
and Technology, Chinese Government Award of Excellence in Healthcare, Chinese Ministry of Health Outstanding
Youth Scientist, and Guangdong Provincial Top Ten Outstanding Youth Award.
