Hazardous Classification Standards:
There are currently two distinct electrical standards used throughout the world. The NEC/CEC standard, as it relates to
hazardous locations, used primarily in the US and Canada, employ Class, Division and Group classifications. Divisions are
defined by the likelihood ignitable concentrations are present. The IEC standards, mandatory across Europe and adopted
in other parts of the world, classify hazardous locations into Zones. Zones, unlike Divisions, are defined by the likelihood
and length of time in which sufficient quantities of the hazardous content are present.
Steps for classifying hazardous materials
per IEC/CENELEC codes
Steps for classifying hazardous materials
per NEC/CEC codes
Note:
Zones 20, 21 and 22 do not include metal dust
Examples of Class II:
Group E: Metal dust – aluminum, magnesium & commercial alloys.
Group F: Carbonaceous dust – coal, carbon black, charcoal, and coke dust.
Group G: Grain dust – flour, grain, wood, plastic, and chemicals.
T-Codes
Each liquid, gas, vapor and dust will have a
specific ignition temperature. To ensure the
proper use of luminaires and equipment
both the NEC and IEC use temperature
ratings or “T Codes.” T Codes shall not
exceed ignition temperature of the specific
hazards encountered in the environment.
The Ignition Temperature of a solid, liquid, or gaseous substance is
the minimum temperature required to initiate or cause selfsustained combustion independent of heating or heated element.

| INDOOR LIGHTING
With superior optical performance, cutting edge ballast design, thermal management, and unique
mechanical features customers can benefit from products that offer the lowest long term costs.
Petro chemical plants
Safety issues facing the petro-chemical
industry are many and complex. Petrochemical facilities which are highly
volatile environments spread out over
large areas, demand a lighting solution
that can operate safely while providing
superior performance, efficiency and
visibility. Holophane offers a wide range
of hazardous rated luminaires to meet
the challenging needs of this industry.
Pulp and paper facilities
Flour and feed mills
The primary concern of the pulp and
paper industry is the use of chlorine
based materials and their by-products
used in the processes. In this everchanging industry it is imperative to
provide luminaires that are manufactured
with superior materials and long life in
mind. Holophane’s luminaires feature a
corrosion resistant finish to endure the
harshest of environments. The luminaire
optical assemblies, made of Endural®
borosilicate glass, do not degrade over
time, and provide excellent thermal
shock resistance in all environments.
Storage and handling of agricultural
products such as grain and flour require
products that are designed to be dustignition proof. The luminaires must
exclude dust from the inside of the
enclosure while continuing to function
at full rating. The Petrolux and Vantage
family of products are both engineered
to operate in these conditions.

External Capacitor Module (ECM)
Experience in collaboration with unique and innovative solutions has lead to yet another industry first, the External Capacitor
Module. The most life limiting electrical component is the capacitor, whose purpose is to fire and regulate the lamp. For hazardous
applications, Holophane uses oil filled AC film capacitors for its additional protection and thermal properties. When the ECM is
specified, the capacitor is remotely mounted outside the electrical housing allowing it to run cooler. This innovation reduces
operating costs by extending the capacitor life up to 4 times as long as the standard configuration. When ordered, the electrical
assembly will carry an unprecedented 8 year warranty by Holophane.

Technology
Optics
Where applicable, Holophane utilizes high quality borosilicate glass luminaires. Not only do they perform better than
acrylic and aluminum, but they last longer and require less maintenance. Holophane’s borosilicate glass reflectors and
refractors are designed to minimize glare and provide precise light control for the highest efficiency and maximum
spacing. The Petrolux III Series will accept high pressure sodium, metal halide, compact fluorescent, incandescent or
select induction sources.
Petrolux III Featuring ISD SuperGlass Technology
Holophane’s luminaires featuring ISD SuperGlass perform drastically better than other standard HID systems.
This means significantly lower initial costs through reduced fixtures without sacrificing uniformity.
Competitive

ISD SuperGlass
Refractor Technology
Food Processing Optics
Holophane’s optically engineered refractors are
designed to provide precise light control and the
desired lighting distributions giving you maximum
design flexibility. The Petrolux III luminaire takes
optical performance to a new level by
incorporating an internal reflector. This feature
increases the amount of perimeter forward light
and reduces cost of ownership through
minimizing fixture count. Additionally, there is no
need to remove separate components reducing
maintenance costs.
In facilities such as grain processing plants, various
areas use or produce chemicals or dusts that may set
off a violent explosion given the correct catalyst.
Additionally, these areas require the use of an
enclosed acrylic/ polycarbonate optic mitigating the
risk of contamination of the food production areas.
Holophane’s acrylic optic meets the rigorous
requirements of this industry. With a symmetric
distribution, it follows the tradition of minimizing
wasted light and promoting safety.

Electrical
The Petrolux III Series electrical housings are constructed of high quality materials, including low copper aluminum die
casts, corrosion resistant hardware and premium gasketing to ensure years of continuous maintenance free service.
Holophane’s dedication to ballast research and development has resulted in a durable product offering, and our
advanced thermal management has allowed our ballasts to run cooler, have higher energy efficiency, and operate at
full lamp operating wattage.
Elite Series e-HID Ballast
Holophane introduces the first Hazardous listed
luminaire with electronic HID ballast technology to
the industry. The Elite Series ballast improves lamp
lumen depreciation in metal halide lamps and has
the highest ballast efficiencies resulting in increased
energy savings.
Sealed Optics for Better T Codes
Restricted breathing is a zonal protection method of a luminaire’s construction such that the possibility of a surrounding explosive gas
entering the assembly is reduced to a low level. With Holophane’s Petrolux III Series, you may specify nR of the entire luminaire,
otherwise fixture is standard with sealed optical assembly (na/nR). The corresponding T-Code is based on temperature measurements
outside the sealed enclosure giving you the ability to use a higher wattage luminaire for your application.
