Instructions to Assessors
Assessment brief
• Health and safety policies and procedures must be
followed at all times.
• Learner must complete all tasks for both vehicle and
structure fires.
• Oral questions should be asked during practical
exercise to confirm knowledge.
Entry Information
There is a prerequisite for taking this assessment, you
must have already met the requirements of: Unit 3285,
Demonstrate knowledge of protection of personal safety
at vegetation fires, or Unit 3283, Demonstrate knowledge
of personal safety at fire and emergency incidents; or
have been able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and
skills.

Identify underfoot and overhead
hazards, hazardous materials and
burning materials. Should be able to
demonstrate a simple risk assessment
process and must be able to point out all
the hazards and take appropriate steps
to ensure safety. Application of the “safe
person concept” at all times. Learner
should keep out of the smoke and out of
the building.
Identify escape routes.
Section Topic: Fire suppression
Appropriate equipment is selected and
set up. Might include: hose size, nozzle
size, hydroblender, foam equipment,
nozzle or branch setting.
Apply extinguishing agent to meet
selected tactics and to cool, extinguish
or control.
Fire is suppressed and fire spread is
contained with minimal use of water or
environmental damage.
Take action to prevent hose and
equipment damage from embers,
tools, vehicles, kinking of hose, water
hammer.
Ask learner why they are doing it the way
they are and give them some ‘what if’
scenarios to confirm knowledge.

Communication is maintained between
pump operator and other personnel
(hand signals and radio).
Maintain safety of personnel. Actions
involve maintaining optimal water pressure,
keeping upwind and away from vehicle
or structure and use of backup personnel
(number 2 on nozzle). Any unsafe
structures should be identified and a safe
distance kept, retreat may be necessary.
Section Topic: Overhaul/mop-up
Identify and extinguish burning and
smouldering material. Avoiding smoke
and not trying to do the role of a crew
equipped with BA. Distance must be kept
from any unsafe structures.
Fire scene is secured and evidence is
preserved.
Safety of the operator and other
personnel is maintained for the duration
of mopping up operations
Hose and equipment recommissioned.
All elements must be complete for BOTH vehicle and structure fires.
