Bottom Block & Hook
You need to know:
•
Use the table in the Spacemaster® SX Technical Guide to determine which style is standard
for the SX hoist you choose and to view the dimensions of each type of hook.
•
Sometimes the HBC hook is replaceable by an RSN hook; see SX Technical Guide.
− Replacing the HBC hook with an RSN hook may increase the headroom.
− Adding an RSN hook at the order stage is a small expense compared to changing it in the
field!
− The adder can be found in the Hoist Options pages of the SX Price List, or in the Hoist
Additionals section of QuoteMaster®.
HBC = Block
RSN = Smooth

Complete Crane Package with VFD Hoist Controls
You need to know:
•
If you purchase a complete crane package with VFD hoist controls, the hoist inverter will
be located in the bridge panel.
•
R&M hoist inverters are suitable for voltages of 380 – 500V.
•
For other voltages, Quotemaster® will automatically add a “transformer for whole
crane” to the bridge panel to transform your crane power to 460V. Your hoist motor will
actually be 460V.

Curved Track
You need to know:
•
Low headroom SX hoists can run on straight track only – no exceptions!
•
Some normal headroom SX hoists can run on a curved track depending on the hoist
model, beam flange width, and curve radius.
•
Other SX models require a swivel trolley to negotiate curves.
•
See the Trolley section in the current SX Technical Guide for details.
•
Please address this at the quote stage!

Double Girder Gauges
You need to know:
•
SEE the price pages for an SX hoist’s standard gauge! (The standard double
girder trolley gauge for a particular hoist model with specific height of lift is shown in
the SX Price List next to the hoist price.)
•
R&M’s SX hoist drawings DO NOT indicate the standard gauge, only a gauge range.
•
Be careful when putting new DG hoists on existing cranes – the gauges MUST
match! Be sure to address this at the quoting stage.
•
Contact R&M Inside Sales for assistance.

Faster Hoist Speeds
You need to know:
•
Not all hoist speed choices are shown in the SX price pages.
•
Faster hoist speeds are often possible with VFD control instead of 2-speed contactor
control.
•
DO NOT just go to the 2-speed hoist options in the price list and assume that all
hoists are available at all speeds.
•
You MUST first determine which adders from the price pages are available for your
hoist selection!
•
You MUST use the Hoist Characteristics Chart in the SX Spacemaster Technical
Guide!
•
You are responsible for any additional costs associated with quoting the wrong hoist
speed adder price.
Using the Technical Guide to determine faster hoist speeds available:
1. Go to the Hoist Characteristic Table in the SX Spacemaster Electric Wire Rope
Hoists Technical Guide.
2. Locate the capacity & duty cycle of the hoist you have previously selected for
your application from the SX Price Book.
3. In the contactor (or inverter) control column:
a) Find the speed you want.
b) Note the motor code & gear type for that speed (found in the same row).
4.
THEN, turn to the Hoist Speed Options page in the SX Price Book to find the
add-on cost and lead time estimates, based on your chosen hoist frame size,
reeving, std. and alternative speeds.

RX Program
You need to know:
•
The RX Program is geared towards replacement hoists for emergency breakdown
situations!
•
The hoists listed are locally available with a 2-4 week lead time without the RX
fee.
•
With the RX fee, these hoists are available with a 2-5 day lead time.
− SX hoist models SX2 – SX6*
− Capacities from 1 – 25 ton*
− 2 business day lead time for normal and low headroom hoists
− 5 business day lead time for double girder hoists
•
If a lead time is critical for your customer, sometimes a longer lift hoist that is locally
available is the best option.*
•
These are still built-to-order. They are NOT stocked on a shelf!
•
Please download the RX Program Hoists at www.rmhoist.com  Distributors
 Distributor Login  Price Lists & Brochures.
* Check the SX Price Book for specific details and the Lead Time Matrix for current
shipment details – not all hoists are included!

“Solo” vs. “Crane” Controls
You need to know:
•
“Solo” controls put the mainline contactor & control transformer in the hoist panel.
•
“Crane” controls put the mainline contactor & control transformer in the bridge
panel. (There are NONE in the hoist panel.)
•
SX2 – SX7 hoists DO NOT include “solo” controls and a pendant, but they can be
added if required.
•
If you purchase a hoist WITH “solo” controls and don’t need them – you can
jumper around them. Please call R&M Technical Support for assistance.
•
If you purchase a hoist WITHOUT “solo” controls and you need them – it is NOT
an easy (or cheap) retrofit.
•
We sell our SX2 – SX7 hoists assuming that they are going on a crane and therefore
assume that the mainline contactor & control transformer are in the bridge panel.
SO, if you need either of these items, you need to add them! – You will get neither
or both; they are not sold separately.
•
For SX2 – SX7 hoists, you will also need to add the pendant if necessary.
•
Please address this issue at the quoting stage!!

Trolley Clearance
You need to know:
•
SX2 – SX5 low headroom hoists need to run on a beam at least 12” tall due to the
“wrap around” trolley design.
•
Normal headroom hoists are a versatile alternative without any beam height
restrictions.
•
Be careful when putting new hoists on existing beams – please address this

Entering Lift Height or Building Dimensions
You need to know:
•
You can enter the height of lift and/or building dimensions!
•
You should ALWAYS enter the building dimensions if known so the program can
engineer the components to fit into the building.
•
If you enter a lift, but then decide to enter building dimensions instead, you’ll need to

Runway Rail
You need to know:
•
If the runway rail is existing, OR you know that you want to use a particular runway rail,
make sure you enter it before running the calculation.
1.
•
Go to the Building Tab Æ enter the Runway Rail type
If you do not enter this information, Quotemaster will auto-select a runway rail size.
All of your components will be based off of this information, which can be a costly error
if not addressed at the quoting stage! Typically, the smaller the rail, the larger the trucks
need to be.

Single Girder Monorail Hoists or Cranes over 10-Ton
You need to know:
•
For single girder monorail hoists or cranes greater than 10-ton capacity, low
headroom hoists are not available.
•
If you get “No hoists available” in QuoteMaster®:
1. Go back to the General Tab.
2. Reset the Hoisting speed, Reeving type, and hoist Duty group back to A/S.
3. Change the Trolley type to A/S.
•
This is because low headroom the default in QuoteMaster®, but capacities only
reach 10-ton. So, you’ll need to set Trolley type to A/S to view & select normal
headroom hoists.

QUOTEMASTER Technical Tip
Box Girders –
Increasing the weight of a suggested box girder
You need to know:
•
QuoteMaster will suggest a box girder when you run a calculation with over 62’-4” span.
•
If you need to increase the weight of the suggested box girder, adjust the value for
GirBoxPrdFacLoaPar parameter, found in the Parameters button. (Make sure you are viewing
ALL Parameter levels.)
•
The default value of this parameter is set at 1. Ratcheting up the parameter value should in most
cases increase the weight of the box girder.
•
It is possible that the girder size could also increase when bumping up this parameter value.
For example:
•
•
Using the default parameter value, the weight of the suggested box girder for a QXS10T x 80 ft
span crane is 14,300 lbs and the size of the box girder is 17 ½” x 43”.
After adjusting the parameter value to 1.2, the weight of the new suggested box girder
increases to 15,830 lbs and in this case the size of the box girder remains the same.

Box Girders –
Increasing the width of a suggested box girder to meet a certain span
to width ratio
You need to know:
•
QuoteMaster will suggest a box girder when you run a calculation with over 62’-4” span.
•
If you need to increase the box girder width to meet a certain span to width ratio, change the value
of GirSpaW_Rat_D (double girder crane) or GirSpaW_Rat_SU (single girder crane) parameter,
found in the Parameters button. (Make sure you are viewing ALL Parameter levels.)
•
The default value of both of these parameters is 80 (as for a ratio of 80 to 1).
For example:
•
•
When using the default parameter value, the plate width of the suggested box girder for a QXS5T x
96 ft span crane is 19 ½” with a distance between the plates of 15”, which does not meet the CMAA
recommendation for the specified span.
After adjusting the parameter value of GirSpaW_Rat_SU to 65, the plate width of the new suggested
box girder is 24” with a distance between the plates of 19 ½”, which exceeds the CMAA
recommendation for this span.

Changing the unit weight of the bridge service platform
You need to know:
•
•
If you need to change the unit weight of the bridge service platform, change the value of
SerPlaMetWgt parameter.
The value of the unit weight is measured in kg/m.
The default value is 75 kg/m (~50 lb/ft).
The minimum value is 50 (kg/m) and the maximum value is 150 (kg/m).
Use 1.49 to convert lb/ft to kg/m.

Load Filter for Second Hoist – THT Calculations
You need to know:
•
If you need to define the load for the second hoist for a THT calculation, change the value of
ThtAuxHoiLoa parameter.
•
•
This parameter will filter out many of the non-applicable combinations on the hoist selection page.
Go to General Tab  Parameters  All Parameters  ThtAuxHoiLoa
Then define the load for the Aux hoist.
The value of the load is always measured in kg.
‒ Note that the load must be entered in kg; the parameter will not accept lbs. i.e. 10-ton aux would be entered as 10000 (kg).
