From studying Graphic Design, to practicing traditional animation, working as a comic book artist and illustrating children’s books, this discussion will demonstrate the versatility the field of drawing has to offer. AmeriCorps: Opportunities for Americans in nonprofit and charitable organizations, Ms. Heather Sauer, FIS Do you want to change the world for the better but don’t know where to start? As an American, you have several opportunities to spend a year working with nonprofits, schools, public agencies, and community groups across the country while earning money for college. You can serve in your local home community, or you can be placed anywhere in the country. It is a challenging and rewarding year where you will learn valuable work and leadership skills and be exposed to careers you never knew existed. If you are interested in any helping profession, come learn about the exciting opportunities available to you. An Engineer’s Work in Power Generation, Prof. Dr.Ing. Klaus Riedle Modern production and information technology hinges around the availability of electric power. How to provide power in an affordable, secure and sustainable manner is a technical, economic and political challenge, demanding an understanding of all three aspects from any participant in this field. This area offers attractive jobs, since global spending is up to $800 billion a year; it suffers however from political interferences, especially in Germany. I was trained as a Mechanical Engineer, I have built all kinds of power plants around the globe and with time I had to learn how to manage people and factories in different countries. In parallel I have been teaching related topics more than 40 years at various universities. Career Possibilities with a Law Degree, Ms. Caroline Lewis-Jones, FIS Law offers a great opportunity to explore the world in a completely different way. In this session we will talk about what it is like to study law at university and also what opportunities are available once you have graduated. The talk will focus on studying Law in England and Wales as well as the possibilities which exist in International Law. If you are thinking about a legal career or you just want to find out what law is all about this is the session for you! Careers in Education, Mr. Bryan Landmann, FIS You see your teachers teach every day, but have you ever wondered what makes a good teacher, or what a teacher does professionally outside the classroom? OR, have you ever wondered what mysterious set of circumstances have led your teachers on the career paths they have chosen? Follow Mr. Landmann on his unconventional path to teaching and find out about what personal attributes and qualifications are required to enter a career in education. Chief Executive Officer in Transition, Mr. Peter Herweck When I finished school I had no idea what to do next, but today, when I look back it looks like a flawless career development. On my way from a German middle school to the CEO position in large German industrial company there were many decisions to make. Let me share what I thought was important in that process. Today, yet another decision is in front of me and it is not any different than it was 30 years back. I am just older or more experienced. In the end it is just about… Looking forward to discussing with you. Comparing Studying Engineering at a University vs. at a University of Applied Sciences, Mr. Fabian Justi, Student You want to be an Engineer and can't decide if you want to go to a "normal" University or to a University of Applied Sciences? I will talk about what the differences are from my experiences, as I have a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Information Technology from the University of Applied Sciences Nürnberg and currently am studying my Master’s degree in Mechatronics Engineering at the Friedrich-AlexanderUniversity Erlangen-Nürnberg. I worked on the side as a working student for nearly my whole student life to finance my studies, so I will also talk about how many hours are possible, in my opinion, to work without compromising your studying. Creating Digital Portfolios for University and Professional Applications, Mrs. Fay Akin, FIS This session will cover what digital portfolios are and how you can best present the body of work that represents your progress and learning experiences. We will also look at which tools are available to you to create a digital portfolio which will distinguish you from other applicants when applying to universities or when making professional applications. Doctoral Studies and Directorship for Innovation and Value Creation, Mr. Karl Rabes from FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg A PhD student? Aren´t these those highly intelligent nerds basically living in a university basement without sunlight, doing useless stuff so that their professor can get another publication? Luckily not; at least I´m not. And I want to show you three things concerning that. First, how I became a PhD candidate and managing director, although being only an average student. Second, the JOSEPHS, our world's first service manufactory in the heart of Nuremberg - an existing shop where you get to see and try out innovations. And third, how you can transform a funny Youtube video about marshmallows into serious research. Looking forward to meet and chat with you! Early Childhood Education, Ms. Alanna Mazzon, FIS Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers out there, but teaching young children is the most fun (I could be biased...). The changes you see in the children you teach occur daily and being involved in shaping their identity is incredible. Every day is different, exciting, rewarding, and hilarious. I look forward to sharing how I got here, how you can get here, and some funny stories along the way. Film & Event Producer and Communication Specialist, Andrea zur Strassen Not always it is clear at the beginning of a career how it will develop –and it doesn`t need to be! I started off with a Master’s degree in German Literature, Communication and Psychology at the University of Bamberg. Then with interesting job opportunities I started to move to different places. In Germany I started my career as a Film Producer, and moving to Switzerland, I took a role as an Executive TV Producer. When I moved to London (UK) I started my own Event Management company and also a social networking organisation. In Luxembourg I combined my Event and Film production background to work as a Communication consultant. Did I know this all when I started? Of course not. Especially in Media there is no fixed job path, and you should be flexible and open for new job opportunities, people and developments in new technologies – then the whole world is open to you. I am happy to discuss my career path together with you. From Financial Controller to Head of Marine Strategy & Marketing – How Did it Work?, Mr. Stefan Kraus from Siemens You start your professional career in Business Administration and finally develop to a leading function in Strategy & Marketing of Siemens Marine. Topics include: Preparation, Presentation, Planning and Visuals. LinkedIn Profiles: Creating and Maintaining a Professional Profile, Mr. Allen Lindblad, FIS Did you know that LinkedIn can help you find, and get into, the college of your dreams? It’s not only a website for business professionals who already have experience who are looking for a job either. If you haven’t already, you should start using LinkedIn when you’re in high school. Internships are right around the corner, and the latest statistics show 1 in 6 internships that started on LinkedIn later translated into a job at the same company. This session will explore how LinkedIn is used as a networking tool and how to build a strong professional online profile that will give you an edge with college and company recruiters. Lost At Sea Business Simulation, Mr. Phillip Annandale, Hult International Business School Are you a good team player and do you have what it takes to literally survive in today’s world? Test your leadership and team skills in the interactive business simulation with Hult International Business School and participate in an exercise directly from the undergraduate program of Hult in London & San Francisco. We look forward to seeing you at today’s business simulation! Marketing and PR Professions, Ms. Christina Böhm, from Birke und Partner GmbH, Kommunikationsagentur People communicate every day. Sometimes even without saying a word. So do companies, associations and institutions, aware of their public image. But company communication is not only about sending messages to the public, it’s also about selling products and ideas. How does communication work on a professional level? How does it support the success of a brand? And how do you find and tell a story that sends the right message to the right audience? PR-expert Christina Böhm knows how and will tell you what kind of qualifications you need to gain a foothold in PR. Pursuing a Career in Research or Medicine, Hanh T. Nguyen, Ph.D I was in a pre-medicine study program at Johns Hopkins University when I became interested in scientific research. How do cells become ‘committed’ to become specialized cells, such as skeletal or heart muscle cells? Which specific genes are turned on or off during this process? What happens when the process is not controlled properly? These are some of the questions that were studied in my laboratories at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg. How can research help to design better methods to diagnose and/or treat diseases? How does one prepare for a career in research and/or medicine? Which branch(es) of science should one study? We’ll discuss the last set of questions and others that you may have. Social Work & Care Management for Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities, Mr. Eddie Casement So you want to change the world, help people? Be a Social Worker! Why do people choose social work as a profession, what kind of training do you need? How do you apply? What are the rewards of practising as a social worker both personal and financial? What are the stresses? What are the practical skills you need, what are the kind of areas you could end up working in? Where can it lead me in life? Some famous social workers! All this and much more in a short presentation looking at the much maligned profession of Social Work, come and hear the real story! The Future of Work, Mr. Tom Egerton, FIS What kind of work will the future offer? Nobody knows. What we do know is that things are changing so quickly that many of the jobs that are in existence now may no longer exist in the future. This interactive session will look at the skills and competencies needed to be successful for a rapidly changing world. The Interdisciplinary Reality, Mr. Julian Ang, Manager Usability & Design, from Brainlab AG Choosing the path of education and career often seems like an irrevocable decision to make. Will other possible interests be blocked in the future? Will I be confined to a small sphere of activity? Giving the example of my own path and options at Brainlab, I will give insight to the possibility of working within seemingly opposing worlds such as Design, Software Engineering, User Experience, Psychology ,and Business Management; as well as the value of interdisciplinary interest. I will also talk about what is important to my team when reviewing applications and interviewing possible candidates. ___________________________________________________________________ 13:15-14:00 Higher Education Fair (Aula & Multi-purpose Room) Agentur für Arbeit Fürth Bath Spa University, England (info table only) BiTS - Business and Information Technology School GmbH, Germany BTK - University of Art and Design, Germany École Hotelière Lausanne, Switzerland EF Education First Erasmus University Rotterdam, Netherlands ESADE Business and Law School, Spain FAU Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany GOstralia!-GOzealand!
