Leslie mcDowell
Recipient
of
the
“Norma Metroka
Golden Apple
Award 2012”
The Norma Metroka Golden Apple Award is a recognition in honor of a
Weedsport teacher remembered for her dedication and commitment to the
district and the Weedsport community. This annual award is presented to an
individual selected by the faculty and staff as an acknowledgement of the
contributions and characteristics similar to those of Norma. Each year nominations are solicited from everyone in the building and the award is presented to the person receiving the most nominations from his or her colleagues.
The 2012 Norma Metroka Award was presented to Miss Leslie McDowell.
Miss McDowell teaches Mathematics and AIS Math, creating connections
with students and helping increase student achievement through her hard
work and dedication.
As Department Chair, Miss McDowell worked diligently to stay on top of
the ever-changing mathematics curriculum, and she continues to function in
this capacity without benefit of the chairperson position. She is a driving force within the department and with the eighth grade team. In
addition to her professional work with colleagues, Miss McDowell is the advisor for the Student Government Organization, the co-advisor
for the National Junior Honor Society, and has been an Odyssey of the Mind coach and judge. She was recognized by the staff of the
Sparks Yearbook in 2011 when they dedicated the yearbook to her, once again reinforcing the relationship that she shares with students.
Miss McDowell clearly demonstrates the qualities and connections exhibited by Norma Metroka, making her a natural choice of her colleagues to receive this recognition. Congratulations, Miss McDowell, and thank you for all that you do for the students of Weedsport.

Outstanding
Student
Tyler Albrecht, son of Todd and
Kelly Albrecht, exemplifies the
epitome of a model student. He is
kind, respectful, thoughtful, and he
always has a positive outlook. A
versatile and competitive athlete,
Tyler was also a selfless and considerate leader among classmates. He
served as a class officer each year
he was in high school, was inducted
into the National Junior Honor SociTyler Albrecht
ety while in the middle school and
then into the National Honor Society in high school.
His positive attitude and genuine caring for others were instrumental in influencing peers in positive ways. He was actively
involved in community service as a frequent volunteer at the Cayuga County Nursing Home and he led class members to engage
in fund raising activities for a variety of charities. Tyler competed in football throughout high school and he was a member of the
track and field team for two years. He was the epitome of a true
team player, putting the good of the team before personal recognition or benefit.
Outstanding
High School
Teacher
John Lawler began his career in
Weedsport during the 1985-1986
school year as a Living Environment
teacher. During his twenty-seven
years of teaching at Weedsport, Mr.
Lawler has touched the lives of students as an educator, coach, and
advisor. A tireless worker and student advocate, Mr. Lawler goes
John Lawler
above and beyond to provide a quality education for his students. He can still be found leading students on stream and lake studies, pond mapping, and Envirothon
competitions.
As a coach in the District, Mr. Lawler has been instrumental in the
success of the Cross Country and Track and Field programs. Mr.
Lawler is still actively coaching modified volleyball and will return to coaching modified cross country in the fall of 2012. As
one can see, Mr. Lawler is a “fixture” in so many capacities at
Weedsport.
His leadership skills, coupled with a quiet, unassuming demeanor
and general consideration for others, effectively provided a positive model for others. His compassion for others and his innate
desire to do the right thing are hallmarks of this fine individual.
Graduating sixth in his class, Tyler planned to study at Nazareth
College in pursuit of his degree in physical therapy as a vehicle to
continue to help others.

The Weedsport Central School District, through Board
of Education policy, transports all students who live outside the village limits. The village limits, on average, is
only a mile or so from either building. Bus routes have
been established to accommodate transportation to all
students outside the village, which are listed on page 7.

two miles from their respective school building. Students in grades 9-12 only need to be transported if they
live beyond three miles from the school building.
Village kindergarten students are transported, unless
they reside in the area which is north of the center of E.
Brutus Street, and east of the center of N. Seneca Street.

SEPTEMBER 2012
Carrie Widrick, Jr.-Sr. High School Principal
Welcome Back!
Everyone has been hard at work preparing for the return of our students for the 2012 – 2013 school year. It is exciting to
be welcoming in another class of seventh grade students as they transition from the Elementary School to the Jr. Sr. High School. Concurrently, we look to the Class of 2013 as the leaders within the building and the community. It seems as though they were just entering the
building as sixth graders!
We bid farewell to Rene Chawgo, who was the long-term substitute for Ashley Cuevas in the
middle school Art/3–8 GEAR position. She has been replaced by Kelly MacCollum for the
up-coming school year. Ms. MacCollum will be familiar to some as she served as the substitute for Hannah Fancher at the end of the last school year.
We were fortunate to hire a Library Media Specialist, Brynn Speer, who will work at both the
Elementary School and the Jr. Sr. High School buildings. Ms. Speer joins us with five years
of experience working in a Kindergarten through twelfth grade Library Media Center.
Congratulations to Jamie Liddiard on her retirement as an aide in the building. Lisa Bauersfeld will be joining us from the Elementary School to provide support in both middle and high
school classrooms. Mrs. Bauersfeld has worked as an aide at the Elementary School in recent
years.
New for the 2012 – 2013 school year is a Journalism course taught by Jon Hay and an Advanced Placement class, Government and Politics, taught by Matt Smith. The Health offerings now include a Fitness Management course taught by Jon
Sgarlata and the Global Environment course taught by John Lawler returned to the master schedule.
Classrooms are cleaned, organized, ready and waiting for the return of our students. Teachers have prepared units and
lessons designed to engage students in high quality learning experiences. We are looking forward with great anticipation to the return of our students!
Valedictorian & Salutatorian
Congratulations to Alyssa Burt, Valedictorian of the
Class of 2012 and to Zachary Walton, Salutatorian of
the Class of 2012. Alyssa, daughter of Richard and
Wendy Burt, will be attending Binghamton University to study biology in preparation for medical school.
Zachary, son of Richard and Laura Walton, plans to
study accounting at Cayuga Community College
while determining the next steps in his career preparation. Both Alyssa and Zach were very involved in
a variety of activities and experiences during their
high school years and they are well prepared for an
exciting future.

Jr.-Sr. High School
Student Handbooks
and the
WCSD Code of Conduct
Significant revisions to the Weedsport Central School District Code of Conduct were approved by the Board of Education in preparation for the 2012–2013 school year. Information and definitions in compliance with the Dignity
for All Students Act have been included. Individuals interested in receiving a complete copy of the Code of Conduct should contact the Jr.-Sr. High School Office at 843-6652.
Excerpts from the Code of Conduct are included in both the middle school and the high school student handbooks.
These handbooks are a part of the student planners distributed to each student at the beginning of the school year.
Parents are asked to review this information with their student/s each school year. It is also presented to students
during the assemblies and classroom visits held during the first two weeks of the school year. Students and parents
should review the handbook carefully as it provides information pertinent to all aspects of the school experience.
Expectations for behavior and student dress, as well as academic eligibility and honor rolls, student organizations,
and available resources are all addressed, in addition to much more information that will be useful throughout the
school year.
The middle school student planner also serves as the passport for students to move around the building during class
time. The passport is used by the middle school students instead of the paper passes issued to high school students.
In addition to the student handbooks and the Code of Conduct, the District Calendar also contains valuable information useful to families and community members. A calendar is sent home to each family through the students.
Additional copies of the school calendar are available by contacting the school office at 834-6652.
The school district web site is a useful tool to access both general and specific information. Current news, daily
announcements, and special bulletins are available at www.weedsport.org, as well as links to the high school curriculum guide and other reference materials. Additionally, the web site contains an area to enroll to receive the enewsletter from Superintendent Shaun O’Connor.
Jr.-Sr. High School
Open House
The annual building-wide Open House will take place
on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 from 6:30–8:30
p.m. Grade level presentations will take place in the
Auditorium following the schedule listed below and
curriculum displays will be available in the Gymnasium throughout the evening. Teachers will be on hand
to discuss the topics that students will learn about
throughout the upcoming school year. Weedsport
apparel will also be available. We look forward to
seeing parents on October 10.

During the scheduling process to prepare for the new
school year, students were notified of the opportunity
to pursue on-line learning through a collaborative arrangement with the Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES.

second semester should contact Mr. Yorio in the
Guidance Office.

WEEDSPORT CENTRAL SCHOOL NEWSNOTES
SEPTEMBER 2012
Timothy Cowin, Elementary School Principal
Dear Families,
We truly appreciate summer in Central New York because we know what it will
be like in three months. The teachers have used this time to rest as well as plan for
the next school year. Students need this time to run and play. It is a time for everyone to rest and regroup. I hope that you and your family have had the chance to
unwind during the summer months.
Student achievement has been a major topic over the last few years; this summer
was no different. The test scores were released at the end of July. The information
on how individual students performed will be sent home at the beginning of the
school year. Please look them over as it should give you more information on areas that your child can improve or areas they do quite well in. The school also uses
this information to see how individual students can improve as well as adjusting
our instructional program to benefit all students.
The halls are gleaming and the buses are shiny as the doors open to our students for the 2012-2013 school year. I
am proud to begin another school year here with the common goal of setting the basis of future success for all of
our students. I know we will have another great year.
Weedsport Elementary School
Continues To Focus On
Better Communication With Families
As a result of the efforts of the elementary shared decision making
committee, the C.A.R.E. Team, our APT is once again providing
Take Home folders for every student. These folders should come
home every night and be returned every morning. Completed work
and homework assignments will be kept in these folders. Parents
continue to share with us that these folders can be very helpful tools
to develop responsibility in our students. The folders can also be a
way for teachers and parents to communicate with one another. These are one more way we try to help keep our parents up to date on all
the wonderful happenings at the elementary building.
All fourth, fifth, and sixth graders will be given a homework planner
to keep track of all homework assignments. Parents will be able to
check these each night to find out what homework needs to be done.
There is also room for parents to write a note to the teacher. Using
the homework planner will help our students prepare for the middle
school since they will use the same kind of homework planner when
they move on to seventh grade.
The first report cards will be handed to parents on Parent Conference Day, Tuesday, November 13, between 12:00-7:00 p.m. We
encourage parents to call anytime there is a question or concern or to
set up a parent conference. These can often clear up miscommunications quickly.

Families Invited to
Elementary Open House
Thursday,
September 20, 2012
Mark your calendar for September 20. The
annual Open House will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Your family will have a chance to meet your
children’s teachers, tour classrooms to learn
more about what children are learning, tour
the building, talk with CHAD instructors and
visit the A.P.T. Book Fair. If you are able to
be a parent volunteer, be sure to sign up with
teachers during Open House. All volunteers
must be approved by the Board of Education.
Be sure to sign up this night for your November 13 parent conference when the first report
cards will be handed to parents. Please help
us teach children to be responsible by insisting that they stay with an adult during Open
House.

Elementary School
Volunteer Policy
Updated
Each year parents volunteer their services at school. We are fortunate to
have so many people that are willing to
help out in our classrooms, the library,
and working on other special projects.
If you would like to volunteer, the process goes as follows:





The first sign up to volunteer is at
Open House on September 20 from
6:30-8:00 p.m. If the volunteer
does not sign up then, they may
talk to the teacher later in the
school year and the same process
is followed.
The classroom teacher submits the
volunteer’s name to the main office.
Administration then reviews the
list of names, approves or disapproves individual names on the
list, and keeps the names of volunteers on file. Only volunteers that
are disapproved will be contacted.
Classroom and approved school
volunteers will be allowed to start
each year on October 1 or the first
school day thereafter.
After this date, the classroom
teacher and approved volunteer
may work together to have that
person come in at a mutually
agreeable time.
While helping in the school, volunteers
are expected to follow the guidelines
below:





Sign in at the main office and wear
a visitor badge.
Maintain a child-centered (warm,
caring, understanding, helpful)
attitude.
Abide by the rules set forth in the
Weedsport Code of Conduct, including the dress code.
Will not discipline or administer
first aid to any children while in
school.
Maintain confidentiality in all ma-


ters pertaining to staff and students.
Respect students, staff, and other
parents while at school.
Failure to abide by these guidelines
may result in the termination of volunteer privileges as determined by the
discretion of school administration.
Meal Charge Policy
Each student has an account and a PIN
number in which he/she can access any
money that has been placed in that account. When a student is running low
on that account, the student will be notified verbally and/or with a note home.
Students may charge up to three meals
as we do not want to deny a meal to
any student. After the third charge,
students will be given a cheese sandwich or a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and milk until their charges are
caught up. A full description of this
district policy can be requested in the
main office or be found on the website.
Six Day Rotating
Schedule
This year the school will again run on a
six day rotating schedule. One of the
advantages of this is that if we had a
holiday or snow day in the old schedule, then the students would miss that
day of specials. Again this year, the
students will have a schedule that rotates if there is a holiday or snow day.
The days will be called Day One
through Day Six. For example, the first
day of school, which is a Tuesday, will
be Day One. Wednesday would be
Day Two, Thursday would be Day
Three, and Friday would be Day Four.
Day Five would be the following Monday and Day Six the following Tuesday. Then the process starts one again
with Day One on that Wednesday. If
school is closed on Day Three, which
page 16
in this example is a Thursday, Friday
would become Day Three. This may
be confusing at first but everyone will
catch on quickly. Over the six days of
specials, each student will have three
days of PE, one day of art, one day of
music, and one day of computers or
library (which is covered on the next
page). There are many reasons for going to this type of schedule, but the
largest reason is that we now have
many staff members that are shared
across the two buildings and the six
day schedule aligns with the A/B day
schedule. Our students benefit from
this through computer instruction,
more PE time, and the continuation of
our excellent art and music programs at
the levels they were in the past.
Computer and Library
Instruction
In the six day cycle, students will have
one day of computer or library instruction. Students in kindergarten, first,
and second grade will continue to have
library. Students in second through
sixth grade will have computer instruction. Second grade is fortunate to have
both library and computer this year.
There will be other opportunities for
teachers to sign up their class for the
upstairs computer lab or library outside
of this “special” time. As with the
schedule, this change has many reasons
behind it, but the most important is that
we have consistent, direct computer
instruction for our students and the
students and teachers will still have the
time to go to the library and work on
research as well as check out books.

Students Being Picked Up
At The End of The Day
In the afternoon, students will leave the
building from three points, depending
on how they are going home. Walkers
and students in the immediate neighborhood will go out the front door on
Jackson Street and bus students will be
brought down to the buses while walkers are being dismissed. Finally, once
the buses leave the bus circle, the student who are being picked up will then
be brought out the back of the building
(by the first grade wing) and then parents may get out of their cars and walk
over to retrieve their students. There
will be a reserved area (nearest to Science Hill) by the pick-up point for parents to wait so that you do not need to
walk great distances across the parking
lot. There is a designated parent waiting area so that staff can easily monitor
students going to the buses by the playground. Staff will not bring students to
parents in cars and students will not be
brought out until the buses have pulled
away. Also, we encourage you to hold
your child’s hand in the parking lot as
other cars may be moving.
ments, but we need these calls at least
one hour before the appointment to
make sure the child is ready to be
picked up.
with their typical daily schedule. The
dates of these assessments are below:
If you need to pick your child up at the
end of the school day, students are sent
out the back of the building at dismissal time. Again, the simplest way to do
this is to write a note to the student’s
teacher. Parents may also call, but these calls need to be made before 2:20
p.m. It is difficult to ensure that a
child will be sent to the pickup point if
calls are made late in the school day
due to the fact that hundreds of students are preparing for dismissal at the
same time. If there is a true emergency,
the school will do its best to get the
child to the needed departure point in a
timely manner. It is also important that
parents do not show up as the students
are getting on the bus and gather their
students. The school needs to be sure
where all students are at dismissal and
that is why we have parents send notes
or sign students out. Simply put, we
need parents’ help to make sure that all
students leave the building where they
are supposed to at dismissal.

Arranging For Your
Child To Be Picked Up
New York State
Assessments
There will be times when students need
to be picked up during the school day
for medical appointments and the like.
The school encourages parents to make
these appointments before and after
school when possible. The simplest
way to do this is to write a note to the
child’s teacher and put it in the homework folder. The note is then given to
the teacher and the teacher can then
send the note to the office. This way
the student can be ready in the office
when the appointment time comes.
We do ask that you be specific as to
who is picking up your child when you
send in a note. Parents can also call
the main office to make these arrange-
The New York State Department of
Education has designated specific dates
for English Language Arts and Mathematics assessments. On these dates,
students in grades 3-8 across New
York State are assessed on their abilities in the subject areas. This information is then used in the following
school year for possible placement in
Academic Intervention Services (AIS).
Please do not schedule doctor or dentist appointments on these days. Students are most ready to take the tests
with their peers on the scheduled days.
If students do miss these days, they

Policy
Students do not need cellular phones or
communication devices at school as
they can use the phone in the main office with the permission of their teacher in between lessons. If a parent does
want his/her child to have a communication device, it must be off and stored
out of sight during school hours (8:30
a.m.-3:30 p.m.). The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items of any
kind. If a student is using the communication device, it will be confiscated
by the school official and returned to
the parent. If there are continued violations of this policy, the student will
be subject to further consequences beyond confiscation. Thank you in advance for keeping the cell phones at
