UV Curing Optical Adhesives

Norland Optical Adhesives are clear, one part adhesives that do not
contain solvents. When exposed to UV light (see page 1053 for a UV
curing lamp), they gel in seconds and completely cure in minutes to give
a tough resilient bond. Each of the six formulas listed below has been
optimized to provide excellent bonding for specific applications.

1oz Dispenser Bottle
NOA60 typically has three uses: as a
mounting cement for lenses, for the
assembly of doublets or prisms, or for
mounting components between two
pieces of glass or methacrylate plastic.
Due to its excellent insulating properties,
NOA60 can also be used as a protective
overcoat on electrical components.
NOA61 is designed to give the best
possible bond to glass surfaces. It meets
Federal Specification MIL-A-3920 for
optical adhesives and is approved for use
on all government contracts specifying
such adhesives. This item has excellent
adhesion to metal, fiberglass, and glassfilled plastics.
NOA63 can be used for bonding
achromats, prisms, and all other
precision compound optics. This
adhesive is characterized by low
fluorescence and provides excellent UV
transmission. It is also suitable for
bonding glass to metal. This adhesive
cures well in thick sections, shrink, and
has a slight resiliency, thus minimizing
strain.
NOA65, when cured, is a very flexible
adhesive and was designed to minimize
strain even when used to bond
dissimilar materials possessing different
coefficients of expansion. It is especially
suitable for relatively thick adhesive
cross sections. Typical applications
include potting of lenses in metal mounts
and bonding plastic to glass. In addition,
this adhesive is also suitable as a blocking
cement for temporary mounting on
polishing blocks.

NOA68 is a flexible adhesive designed to
give improved adhesion to many plastics
such as acrylic, polycarbonate, and CAB.
Suggested uses for NOA68 include
bonding compound plastic lenses,
laminating polarized film between glass
or plastic, mounting lenses in metal or
plastic mounts, and bonding cover
glasses onto plastic optics.
NOA81 is an adhesive that cures
extremely quickly. Although NOA81 has
similar qualities to NOA61, it cures
three to five times faster and provides a
stronger bond. NOA81 is recommended
for applications that require extra
toughness or rapid curing.
K6-NOA is a kit that includes all six UV
curable adhesives above with application

NBA107 is a single component, UV curing adhesive used to bond optical components to
metal polishing fixtures temporarily. The adhesive cures by exposure to UV light, thus
eliminating the heat-induced strain typical of hot pitch mounting methods. Deblocking
(removal of the optic) is accomplished by immersing the optic in warm water (80°C).

The F112 epoxy is an ideal epoxy for making room-temperature terminations.
The long 40-minute pot life allows more connectors to be produced from one

The F120 epoxy provides a combination of fast cures and low shrinkage for

Electrodag 112 is a ready-to-use conductive graphite antistatic shield acrylic coating that provides
extremely high conductivity, making it ideal for coating plastics to create EMI shielding. It is also used
to provide a conductive protective coating on metals and plastics and for controlling electrostatic
discharge. Electrodag 112 is water-based and cures at room temperature; it can be handled after curing
25 minutes and fully cures in 24 hours. The curing process can be accelerated by using temperatures up
to 160°F (71°C).

Silverdag, known as Electrodag 18DB70X, is a low VOC silver conductive coating used
for EMI/RFI shielding protection. It offers excellent adhesive and cohesive properties as
well as an excellent resistance to scratching and marring. In addition, Silverdag offers
superb aging stability. It maintains shielding integrity in harsh environments, making it
ideal for outdoor applications. To mix Silverdag, it is recommended to combine it with
Acetone (1:1 by volume) and stir.

Two-Component Silver Epoxy Adhesive
Electrodag 5810 (i.e. Silver-epoxy) is a room-temperature cure, silver-filled, 2-component
epoxy that provides good electrical and thermal conductivity. With a volume resistance of
0.0007Ω-cm and a lap shear of 1000psi, Silver-epoxy is ideal for mounting electrically and
thermally conductive components when soldering is not possible. The room-temperature
cure time is 24 hours, but this can be accelerated by using higher temperatures [e.g. 2
hours at 149°F (65°C) or 1 hour at 212°F (100°C)].

Our extensive selection of electrical adapters includes BNC to
SMA, SMA to SMA, SMC to SMC, and even BNC to SMC
adapters. Banana adapters are convenient for connecting a BNC
cable to most standard digital multimeters. T8535 is a widebandwidth DC blocking filter incorporated directly into an SMA
feed-through connector. The block is used for applications where a
DC offset is problematic. The filter has a frequency range of 7kHz
to 23GHz, the insertion loss is less than 0.5dB in the 100kHz to
12.4GHz range, and 0.75dB in the 12.4 to 23GHz range.

The LSL10 laser safety sign provides a clear and concise indication that a laser system is in use, stating the appropriate warning message
and laser classification on a fully illuminated sign. Designed to meet ANSI Z136.1 (the ANSI standard for Safe Use of Lasers), the LSL10
operates from 110 or 220VAC and has a safety interlock feature that
prevents the use of interlock equipped laser systems unless the safety light is
turned on.

laboratories where safe laser operation is a must. The LSL10 is a useful tool

The LSL10 accepts any one of the four optional signs available below,
covering Laser Classes 2 through 4. Each sign comes with a set of numeric
labels to allow for customization of the sign for your specific wavelength
and output power as required by ANSI Z136.1 and other pertinent laser
safety specifications.
This safety sign can be displayed on your benchtop or mounted to any wall.

Beam Shutter
Epoxies
The SH05 Beam Shutter utilizes a rotary, electromechanical actuator to provide sub-millisecond shutter
operation. In general operation, the shutter remains in a closed position and then opens with a pulse control
signal. As long as the control voltage to the shutter remains high, the shutter will stay open; however, if the
voltage goes low, the shutter will close, providing inherent fail-safe operation. An optical sensor, which detects
the shutter blade position in the housing, confirms the state of the shutter position, making it ideal in
applications where a laser safety lockout is required. The rate at which the device is opened can be controlled.

The input aperture of the SH05 is threaded with Thorlabs SM05 (0.535"-40) thread to interface easily with
all of our SM05 lens tubes. The SH05 is English and Metric System compatible and comes with a 10' cable
to connect the shutter directly to the SC10 Controller.
Two controllers for the SH05 that include an "interlock mode" incorporated into the control logic of the
controller are available from Thorlabs: SC10 Shutter Controller and TSC001 T-Cube Flipper/Shutter
Controller. The SH05 can also be used with a third-party controller.

Shutter Controller
The SC10 is a versatile instrument designed to control the SH05
Beam Shutter with millisecond accuracy. The front panel of the SC10
features an LED that reveals the status of the shutter at a glance and
an interactive LCD display that provides access to the control
parameters. Computer control is provided through a digital I/O
RS232 port on the back of the unit, as well as a BNC jack for a 5V
external trigger. As a special feature, the unit incorporates a laser safety
interlock feature that overrides all system commands and closes the

Breadboards via the four counterbored mounting holes provided

Epoxies
The black foil material is mainly used to block out light. It has a matte black
finish to absorb any reflective light from an ambient or conventional light source.
The foil is ideal for masking light leaks and/or eliminating unwanted reflections.
It can be quickly molded to form blackout covers, dark rooms, laser channels, or

Hardboard
This material is a heavy-duty construction board consisting
of a dense foam core sandwiched between two plastic-coated
cardboard outer layers measuring 5mm thick; the material
cuts easily with a utility knife for easy construction of

Image contrast can suffer due to stray light reaching the focal plane of many applications where the light path travels through a tube or
other enclosed area. Applying a flat-black paint to the inside may help, but a textured matte-black surface is a much more effective light
trap.
Flocked paper is a very black, self-adhesive material made of many fine fibers. When looked at from low angles, it absorbs virtually 100%
of the light that strikes it. The fibers will not shed dust or lint, unlike some velvet and felt materials.

offers a wide range of the most commonly used balldriver and hex
wrench sizes housed within a convenient stand. The stand is precision

Among the most essential general purpose tools in an optics laboratory, balldrivers provide
compatibility with standard socket-head cap screws, used for clamping and fastening, and with
a host of optomechanical actuating devices.

Unlike standard hex wrenches, the unique hex ball design of the balldriver tip allows them to
operate at angles, ideal for hard-to-reach places. These balldrivers feature a hard plastic handle

pigtailing, can be optimized by having closer
access to the laser chip.

The CL-200 fiber inspection scope provides 200X
magnification for inspection of quality and polishing of fiber
optic connectors. The fiber microscope utilizes a white LED
for coaxial illumination. Light is introduced into the optical
FC, SC, & ST
path (axis) so that it comes out of the tip of the objective
and strikes the sample perpendicular to the fiber end-face.
It provides excellent detail of scratches and contamination. The fiber scope is
recommended for critical examination of polish quality of fiber optic connectors.

The 10125HG SMA height gauge is ideal for accurately measuring the height of a polished fiber
optic SMA connector. SMA-to-SMA couplers are designed to be a non-contact interface, and
since the insertion loss (IL) of an SMA-SMA junction is dependent on the distance between the
