Construction update
Construction
is surging
ahead and
remains on
time and on
budget.
Three more
tower cranes
were erected
in December,
bringing the
total to nine
cranes on
site.
The two decked car parks on site are progressing well and the central
plant is becoming more and more prominent as the ground slab has
been laid and the lift cores have been completed.
The Federally funded State rehabilitation service is starting to take
shape above ground with the pilings now complete.
On Pathology, the cladding is continuing around to the southern side
now and the glass curtain walls will start to be installed on Education
this month.
The main hospital’s final lift cores will reach full height over the next few
months and the first pre-cast cladding will be installed on the western
end, near to the main entrance. Work has also started on the levels
above the oncology bunkers in the cancer centre within the main
hospital. Work will commence on the hospital’s administration building
in March and will be complete by the end of the year.

Pathology planning
In November and December, local
Pathology leads joined the FSH team
on site for a tour of the Pathology
building.
As part of their visit, the group had an
opportunity to see the proposed
finishes, materials and colour
schemes as well as advising on some
of the prototype benching for the new
facility and considering some of the
final details such as location of gases
outlets and power points.
Around the site, the roads are all on schedule and progressing well and
the former lake has been reshaped and retaining wall installed.
New Challenger Lake handed over
Brookfield Multiplex formally
handed over the new site lake
to the Challenger Institute of
Technology in November. Geoff
Zimmer, Director of Project
Delivery at FSH and Jon Stone,
Project Director at Brookfield
Multiplex are pictured here
presenting Kerry Bowen from
Challenger Institute with a
commemorative photo.

Workforce planning update

Major boost for cancer services
A significant amount of planning is being done by South
Metropolitan Area Health Service (SMAHS) around
staffing the hospital, including:
 A South Metropolitan Area Health Service (which
includes Fiona Stanley Hospital) Workforce Plan will
be developed to ensure that a suitably skilled
workforce is available for the hospital’s opening and
that transition of staff to FSH is as efficient as
possible.
 Information on the SMAHS relocation principles will be
made available over the coming months.
 In 2011, the South Metropolitan Area Health Service
will develop detailed clinical services plans for each
hospital site.
 In 2011, detailed South Metropolitan Area Health
Service clinical and corporate reconfiguration work will
commence.
 In 2011, an employee intention survey will be
conducted. This will provide key information to inform
the SMAHS workforce planning process.
 In 2012, the focus will be on staff relocation,
recruitment and retention, training and education and
identifying areas where re-skilling and up-skilling of
staff is required.
No permanent WA Health employee will be made
redundant as a result of changes to hospitals in the South
Metropolitan Area Health Service.
As part of the opening of any new facility or expansion of
existing health facilities, a whole of health approach is
taken to manage the transition, including retaining
existing staff and recruiting new staff.
Cancer patients are set to benefit from a major boost
to radiotherapy services recently announced by the
State Government.
Health Minister Dr Kim Hames said a $200 million
contract had been awarded to specialist medical
company Genesis Care to provide state-of-the-art
radiotherapy services for Royal Perth Hospital, a new
cancer centre in Bunbury and Fiona Stanley Hospital.
Dr Hames said the contract ensures that Fiona
Stanley Hospital will be equipped with the some of the
most sophisticated radiotherapy equipment in the
Southern Hemisphere, when it opens in 2014.
The radiation oncology service, which has been
outsourced at Royal Perth Hospital since 1994, will
move to Fiona Stanley Hospital when it opens in 2014.
Genesis Care is an Australian-owned company that
provides high quality cancer and healthcare services
across the country.
Kwinana Freeway cycle path intermittent closure
The Kwinana Freeway cycle/footpath between South Street and Farrington Road will be subject to intermittent
temporary closures for a period of approximately 5 months from January due to construction on the multi deck
car park and central plant. Every effort will be made to avoid peak times.
Traffic management and detours will be in place to direct users around the hospital site, via Farrington Road,
Murdoch Drive and South Street. Details of the planned closure times will be communicated to regular users via
signage on the path.
For information on the next expected closure, please contact Andrew Pittaway from Brookfield Multiplex on
9428 6605.
