IMax B6-Series Balance Charger Quick Start Guide
Thank you for purchasing the IMax B6AC Dual Power Balance Charger. Please read these instructions carefully before
attempting to use.
Basic operation for balance charging a Lipo Battery:
1.
Locate the main charge connection cable. It has two male banana plug connectors (red and black) on one end, and a male T-Plug connector
on the other end. Plug this cable into the female banana plug connection ports on the end of the charger. Now connect the main power lead
of your battery to the T-Plug on the main charge cable. Next, plug the balance plug of your Lipo battery into the correct balance plug port of
the charger. Your Lipo must have a JST/XH balance connector. Your battery now has TWO connections to the charger.
2. Connect the charger to a 120v AC outlet or an 11 to 18 volt power supply. The LCD display should activate.
3. Press the ‘Batt. Type/Stop’ button until “PROGRAM SELECT – LiPo BATT” is displayed.
4. Press the ‘Start/Enter’ button once. “LiPo CHARGE” should be displayed.
5. Press the ‘right arrow’ button until you see “LiPo BALANCE” displayed. This is important! You can go to the other “Lipo *****” options
by pressing the ‘right arrow’ button repeatedly, but be certain to choose “LiPo BALANCE” if you wish to balance charge your Lipo
battery.
6. Press the ‘Start/Enter’ button – the charge rate will flash in the lower left of the display. Select the charge rate by pressing the ‘right arrow’
button. Each time you press this button, the charge rate increases by 0.1 amps (100 milliamps). You can decrease the charge rate by
pressing the ‘left arrow’ button. Please read the section further down the page about selecting the correct charge rate. THIS IS VERY
IMPORTANT! BE CERTAIN OF YOUR CHARGE RATE!!!
7. Press the ‘Start/Enter’ button again – the battery voltage selection flashes. Press the ‘left arrow’ button or ‘right arrow’ button until you see
the correct battery voltage displayed (7.4v for a 2-cell Lipo, 11.1v for 3 cell, 14.8v for 4 cell, 18.5v for 5 cell, 22.2v for 6 cell).
8. Press and HOLD the ‘Start/Enter’ button for 3 seconds – “Battery Check Wait…” is displayed, and then “Confirm(Enter)” and
“Cancel(Stop)” flashes.
9. Press the ‘Start/Enter’ button again and charging will begin. Press the ‘right arrow’ button to toggle the view between the main display and
the individual cell voltages. To stop charging at any time, simply press the ‘Batt. Type/Stop’ button.
10. The charger will beep for about 10 seconds when charging is complete, or after 2 hours if charging is not completed by then.
11. Disconnect the battery from the charger, and disconnect the charger from the power supply.
IMPORTANT!! Selecting the charge rate:
Most Lithium Polymer (Lipo), NiMh and NiCd batteries are designed to be charged at a maximum rate of 1C (1 times Capacity) . This means that the
charge rate (milliamps) must not exceed the capacity (mah) of the Lipo. So a 500 mah Lipo should not be charged at a rate greater than 500 milliamps
(0.5 amps), and a 2200 mah Lipo should not be charged at a rate greater than 2200 milliamps (2.2 amps). Each LiPo cell will be charged to 4.2 volts,
and when charging is complete, a 3 cell Lipo will have a voltage of 12.6 volts (4.2 + 4.2 + 4.2 = 12.6 volts).
A123 cells, also called LiFe cells, can be charged at higher rates (see the manufacturer’s recommendations). In order to charge LiFe (A123) batteries,
you must go to the “User Set Program” menu, then “LiPo/V.Type”, then press “Start/Enter” and select “LiFe/V.Type 3.3” with the “right arrow” key.

Reverse Polarity Protection : Prevents damage if a Lipo is plugged in with the polarity reversed.
Lithium Polymer Battery Safety Instructions
Charging:









Lithium Polymer (Lipo) batteries must only be charged with a charger designed for them.
Always be certain of the correct charging voltage: 2-cell Lipos = 8.4 volts, and 3-cell Lipos = 12.6 volts
NEVER EXCEED A CHARGE RATE OF 1C. For example, a 500 mah Lipo must not be charged at a rate greater than 500 milliamps
(0.5 amps), and a 1000 mah Lipo must not be charged at a rate greater than 1000 milliamps (1.0 amps)
Charge Lipo batteries on a FIREPROOF SURFACE and away from flammable materials.
DO NOT leave Lipo batteries unattended while charging.
Do not charge Lipo batteries inside a car. Do not charge Lipo batteries inside a RC model.
Do not charge a Lipo battery that has ‘ballooned’ or ‘puffed up’, or shows any signs of leakage or physical damage.
DO NOT use water to extinguish a battery fire – use a Class ABC dry fire extinguisher
Always remove Lipo batteries from a charger once they are charged.
Storage and Handling:








Misuse of a Lipo battery may result in the battery generating excessive heat, igniting or exploding.
Keep batteries out of the reach of children.
Store in a fireproof container in a cool dry place. Do not allow a Lipo battery to get wet.
Always guard against any possible short circuit.
NEVER alter or disassemble a Lipo battery.
Keep Lipo batteries away from heat and direct sunlight, and do not store in a car during hot weather.
Never use a Lipo that is leaking or gives off a strong odor, or has been damaged in any way.
Dispose of defective Lipos in accordance with local ordinances and in a safe manner.
