The Sure-Lites RBP Series
Remote Battery Pack enables
the conversion of nearly any
standard compact fluorescent
fixture into an emergency
lighting fixture. The RBP Series
is a complete conversion
system in that it contains
everything required for the
conversion including batteries,
electronics, and test switch.
Sure-Lites’ line-latched
electronic circuitry makes
installation easy and
economical. A labor efficient
AC activated load switch
prevents the lamps from turning
on during installation to a
non-energized AC circuit.
Line-latching eliminates the
need for a contractor’s return
to a job site to connect the
batteries when the building’s
main power is turned on.
L a m ps
The RBP Series is designed to
operate with 7W, 9W, 13W,
18W or 26W 2-pin compact
fluorescent lamps only. At the
start of emergency mode, the
lamp will illuminate at 98% of
its rated lumen output. In
fixtures containing two lamps,
all lamps will illuminate in AC
mode, but only one lamp will
be illuminated in emergency
mode. The RBP Series can be
used in switched or unswitched
applications; in 277 VAC
switched applications, the EMS
277 Switching Accessory must
be used.
Housing Construction
The aluminum housing for
the RBP Series contains user
serviceable components
making periodic maintenance
simple and efficient. Installation
is easy since all wiring
connections are provided in
a flexible conduit which
attaches to a standard junction
box. Adjustable U-bolts are
provided for mounting the unit
to hanger bars or 1⁄2" EMT.
The RBP Series is intended
for use in ceilings which can
be accessed from above
(i.e. suspended ceilings). It can
be installed up to 3 feet from
the lighting fixture. The RBP
Series is Damp Location Listed;
it is not suitable for use in
plenum ceiling applications.
Overload and Sho rt
C i r c u i t P r o t e c t i on
The solid-state overload
monitoring device in the DC
circuit disconnects the lamp
load from the battery should
excessive wattage demands
be made and automatically
resets when the overload or
short circuit is removed. This
overload current protective
feature eliminates the need
for fuses or circuit breakers
for the DC load.
Solid-State Charger
Brownout Circuit
Supplied with a 120/277 VAC,
voltage regulated solid-state
charger. Immediately upon
restoration of AC current after
a power failure, the charger
provides a high charge rate.
The charge circuit reacts to the
condition of the battery and
alters the rate of charge in
order to maintain peak battery
capacity and maximize battery
life. Solid-state construction
recharges the battery following
a power failure in accordance
with UL 924.
The brownout circuit in SureLites’ units monitors the flow
of AC current to the unit and
activates the emergency
lighting system when a
predetermined reduction
of AC power occurs. This
dip in voltage will cause most
ballasted fixtures to extinguish
causing loss of normal lighting
even though a total power
failure has not occurred.

The RBP Series incorporates
solid-state switching which
eliminates corroded and pitted
contacts or mechanical failures
associated with relays. The
switching circuit is designed to
detect a loss of AC voltage and
automatically energizes the
lamps. Upon restoration of
the AC power, the emergency
lamps will switch off and the
charger will automatically
recharge the battery.

When the battery’s terminal
voltage falls below 80% of
the rated voltage, the lowvoltage circuitry disconnects
the lighting load. The
disconnect remains in effect
until normal utility power is
restored, preventing deep
battery discharge.

Molex connector attaches to
28" flex cable and makes final
battery connection. May be
mounted directly to ceiling
tiles if local codes permit.
S e a l e d L e a d C a l c i u m B a t t e ry
The fully sealed, long-life,
maintenance-free lead calcium
battery is ideal for emergency
lighting applications. These
batteries typically provide 8 to
10 years of life and may be
operated in any position.
Warranty
All Sure-Lites' products are
backed by a firm one-year
warranty against defects in
material and workmanship
(excluding lamps). Maintenancefree, long-life, sealed lead
calcium batteries carry a
five-year pro-rata warranty.
