SEEDING of DRAINAGE SWALE NOTES
NOTE: SEED MIX DIST BY: ERNST CONSERVATION SEEDS
PHONE: 1-800-873-3321
OR APPROVED EQUAL
USE AN APPROVED MIX OF 20% BROOM SEDGE, 30% BLUE GAMMA GRASS, 40% CAMPER LITTLE BLUESTEM
AND 10% CANADIAN WILD RYE. APPLY AT A RATE OF 35 POUNDS PER ACRE.
EXAMINE FINISHED SURFACES, GRADES, TOPSOIL QUALITY AND DEPTH. DO NOT START SEEDING WORK
UNTIL UNSATISFACTORY CONDITIONS ARE CORRECTED. PROVIDE TOPSOIL AS REQUIRED TO GRADE
AND BLEND HEADWALL INTO SWALE.
PREPARATION FOR SEEDING:
A. LIMIT PREPARATION TO AREAS WHICH WILL BE IMMEDIATELY SEEDED.
B. LOOSEN TOPSOIL OF AREAS TO A MINIMUM DEPTH OF 4". REMOVE STONES OVER 1" IN DIAMETER AND
STICKS, ROOTS, RUBBISH AND EXTRANEOUS MATTER.
C. GRADE SWALE AREAS TO A SMOOTH, FREE DRAINING AND EVEN SURFACE WITH A LOOSE, UNIFORMLY
FINE TEXTURE. ROLL AND RAKE, REMOVE RIDGES AND FILL DEPRESSIONS AS REQUIRED TO DRAIN.
D. APPLY LIMESTONE AT 50 LBS. PER 1,000 SF. DISTRIBUTE EVENLY BY MACHINE AND INCORPORATE
THOROUGHLY INTO TOPSOIL.
E. APPLY TYPE 5-10-5 FERTILIZER AT A RATE EQUAL TO 25 LBS. PER 1,000 SF. INCORPORATE THOROUGHLY
INTO SOIL.
G. RESTORE PREPARED AREAS TO SPECIFIED CONDITIONS IF ERODED, SETTLED OR OTHERWISE
DISTURBED AFTER FINE GRADING AND PRIOR TO SEEDING.
SEEDING:
BROADCAST SEED WITH KNAPSACK SEEDER AT 35 LBS. PER ACRE. APPLY SEED AT 21 RATE HORIZONTALLY
AND 21 RATE VERTICALLY (OPPOSITE DIRECTION). FOLLOW SEEDING BY LIGHTLY ROLLING OR TACKING SEED
INTO TOP 41" OF SOIL TO ACHIEVE GOOD SOIL TO SEED CONTACT. DO NOT ROLL OR TACK IF SOIL IS WET.
COVER SEED WITH 100 % bio- degrade able coconut fiber matting

and Seeding
1. PREPARE SOIL BEFORE INSTALLING BLANKETS, INCLUDING ANY NECESSARY APPLICATION OF LIME, FERTILIZER, AND SEED.
2. BEGIN AT THE TOP OF THE SLOPE BY ANCHORING THE BLANKET IN A 6" (15cm) DEEP X 6" (15cm) WIDE TRENCH
WITH APPROXIMATELY 12" (30cm) OF BLANKET EXTENDED BEYOND THE UP-SLOPE PORTION OF THE TRENCH. ANCHOR THE
BLANKET WITH A ROW OF STAPLES/STAKES APPROXIMATELY 12" (30cm) APART IN THE BOTTOM OF THE TRENCH.
BACKFILL AND COMPACT THE TRENCH AFTER STAPLING. APPLY SEED TO COMPACTED SOIL AND FOLD REMAINING 12" (30cm)
PORTION OF BLANKET BACK OVER SEED AND COMPACTED SOIL. SECURE BLANKET OVER COMPACTED SOIL WITH A ROW OF
STAPLES/STAKES SPACED APPROXIMATELY 12" (30cm) APART ACROSS THE WIDTH OF THE BLANKET.
3. ROLL THE BLANKETS (A.) DOWN OR (B.) HORIZONTALLY ACROSS THE SLOPE. BLANKETS WILL UNROLL WITH APPROPRIATE SIDE
AGAINST THE SOIL SURFACE. ALL BLANKETS MUST BE SECURELY FASTENED TO SOIL SURFACE BY PLACING STAPLES/STAKES
IN APPROPRIATE LOCATIONS AS SHOWN IN THE STAPLE PATTERN GUIDE. WHEN USING OPTIONAL DOT SYSTEM , STAPLES/STAKES
SHOULD BE PLACED THROUGH EACH OF THE COLORED DOTS CORRESPONDING TO THE APPROPRIATE STAPLE PATTERN.
4. THE EDGES OF PARALLEL BLANKETS MUST BE STAPLED WITH APPROXIMATELY 2"-5" (5cm-12.5cm) OVERLAP DEPENDING
ON BLANKET TYPE. TO ENSURE PROPER SEAM ALIGNMENT, PLACE THE EDGE OF THE OVERLAPPING BLANKET (BLANKET BEING
INSTALLED ON TOP) EVEN WITH THE COLORED SEAM STITCH ON THE PREVIOUSLY INSTALLED BLANKET.
5. CONSECUTIVE BLANKETS SPLICED DOWN THE SLOPE MUST BE PLACED END OVER END (SHINGLE STYLE) WITH AN APPROXIMATE
3" (7.5cm) OVERLAP. STAPLE THROUGH OVERLAPPED AREA, APPROXIMATELY 12" (30cm) APART ACROSS ENTIRE
BLANKET WIDTH.
