ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING at PORTLAND STATE UNIVERSITY
Electrical Engineering deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. It covers a range of topics including power,
electronics, telecommunications, etc. Electrical Engineers are typically concerned with using electricity to transmit energy and also to process information.
Students must apply to the Electrical Engineering (EE) major in the Maseeh College as all required coursework is nearing completion (by the application deadline) in order to take upper division (300– and 400– level) courses. This is a separate application from the PSU Admission Application. Details of admission to the
EE major can be found on the website (http://www.pdx.edu/ece/admissions-process).
General education: Transfer students enter into PSU’s University Studies (General Education) program based on the quantity of credits completed. In addition,
transfer students are required to complete Arts and Letters/Social Science (A&L/SS) Requirements.
Note: EE majors are required to take WR 121 and a Speech/Communication class prior to admission to the upper division program. EE majors can choose to
take lower-division WR 227 (Introductory Technical Writing) at their community college or the upper division WR 327 (Technical Report Writing) at PSU. Please
see the handout entitled “Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science Arts & Letters/Social Science Requirement” (available on the Maseeh College
Undergraduate Advising website under the info for “Transfer Students”: www.pdx.edu/cecs/undergraduate-advising) for more info.
TIPS
Page 1

Apply to PSU by the priority admission deadlines (December 1 for the following fall)

Apply to the ECE Department once required lower division courses are nearly completed
(more info: http://www.pdx.edu/ece/admissions-process) following ECE Department deadlines; lower division courses may be taken at PSU or at community college

In order to apply for PSU scholarships, students must have already applied to PSU. Scholarship application due date=Feb. 1 for the next academic year that begins in September
(http://www.pdx.edu/scholarships)

All incoming PSU students must complete Orientation before registering; students must
have been admitted to PSU before they can sign up for Orientation

Advising is available for transfer students still studying at the community colleges (contact

*Please note that when completing a sequence of classes as noted by a “*”, you should complete the entire
sequence at one institution (rather than attempting to complete parts at different institutions). Sequences do
not always match up course to course but transfer best as a group.
Access to upper division (300– and 400– level) courses in Electrical Engineering at PSU is granted when students
complete all lower division requirements listed above and have applied and been formally admitted to the upper
division EE major.
