Section Highlights
I) IEEE All India Student Congress
Spearheaded by the IEEE India Council and hosted by IEEE Madras Section, the All India Student
Congress 2013, brought together young IEEE student and professional members for a series of interacting
and networking opportunities, launched at the Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore.
Keeping this in mind, the Organizing Committee of the IEEE AISC 2013 brought forth an array of
thought-provoking talks and interactive sessions to cater to the all round development of an IEEE Student
Member - i.e. in technical knowledge, leadership, entrepreneurship, life skills and so on, through this year's
congress.
330 select student delegates from 80 institutions across the country spanning over 8 states were selected to
attend this invite-only event. The fourth day catered to the raising of awareness and involvement into the
two key IEEE societies namely, IEEE Computer Society and IEEE Power and Energy Society. The main
IEEE Society event is the Innovative Projects Showcase where 33 projects have been short-listed from
numerous submissions across the nation.
Spanning over three days, the congress promised to be an informative and engaging experience for all its
attendees. The first three days elucidated the various dimensions of IEEE and its host of functionalities,
along with a number of leadership and professional events. This included talks from some of the top brass
in the IEEE, such as Dr. M. Ponnavaiko, Chairman, IEEE India Council, Mr. Harish Mysore, Director,
IEEE India Operations, Dr. Preethi Bajaj, Vice-Chair, IEEE India Council Student Activities Committee,
Mr. T.S. Rangarajan, Chairman, IEEE Madras Section Dr.N. Kumarappan, Secretary IEEE Madras
Section, Mr. Barnabas Muthu, Chair, IEEE India Student Activities Committee (SAC) and Mr. Anand
Balu, Chair, IEEE Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technologies (SIGHT). Some of the top
industry and academic speakers include Dr. C R Muthukrishnan, Former Deputy Director, IIT Madras, Mr.
Vineeth Vijayaraghavan, Founder & Editor, Panchabuta, Ms. Priya Kuber, Managing Director, Arduino
India and Mr. B. Damodaran, Consultant, Randstad India Pvt. Ltd. and Mr. Vijay Anand, CEO, The
Startup Centre.
The congress on the whole intended to provide impetus for its participants to observe, assimilate and learn
from many inspiring sessions and thereby evolve as better leaders for taking on the challenges ahead. It
2
also provided a unique opportunity for students from various disciplines and institutions to interact and
exchange ideas and hence benefit mutually.
II)
Student Project Proposal from Student Branches
Project proposals were invited from all the Student branches of the Madras Section. 12 different project
proposals were received by the section. The proposals were scrutinized by the IEEE members in the
relevant specialization and based on the recommendation of the review committee members, 8 projects
were short listed by the IEEE Madras Section. The final stage of the project is under process. The
respective student branches will be awarded by holding a mega function after successful completion of
project and submission of the reports.
III)

IV)
Technical Sponsorships and Financial Assistance to the student branches
IEEE Madras Section provides Financial Assistance to the activities such as: Conferences, Workshops,
Seminars, Symposia, etc., organized by the student branches. The norms have been defined for such
Financial Assistance which is based on the number of student members available in each student Branch.
During the year 2013, 25 such programs have been extended financial support to the tune of Rs.1, 97,500.
The Section has also approved in-principle for some more student branches.
V)
Educational Activities
i) Faculty Development Program
Madras Section is actively conducting the Faculty Development Programs in the relevant technical areas in
various Engineering Institutions located at different parts of Tamil Nadu.
3
During the year 2013, 3 such Faculty Development programs were organized in Advanced Control
system, Embedded Systems and its Application to Power system, Power Electronics, Neural and Fuzzy
Methods in Engineering - Theory and Practice through which about 143 faculty members have been
benefited.
ii) Student Skill Development Program:
IEEE Madras Section under educational activity has organized two Skill Development Program
for the benefit of students to update their knowledge and skill. Skill - Learning is an important
process
in academic institutions. Transfer of knowledge takes place from the experts to the students only when
the presentation and training is effective. As a service to the student community in the engineering
institutions, IEEE Madras Section in association with IEEE Student Branch, Sona College of Technology,
Salem, and Student Branch, M.P. Nachimuthu M. Jaganathan Engineering College, Erode organized a
Student Skill Development Program (SSDP) for Students on the topic of Artificial Intelligence Methods in
Engineering and Soft Computing Tools in Engineering. These two programs proved to be an excellent
opportunity to listen to the experts in this field and also to discuss basics and advanced concepts of Soft
Computing
Techniques in Engineering. These program enabled the participants to exchange their
knowledge in Techniques applied to various engineering problem domains. The SSDP was an invaluable
experience for the students. Around 116 students from various colleges participated in this program.
iii) Teacher in Service Program(TISP)
Teaching-Learning is an important process in academic institutions. Transfer of knowledge takes place
from the teacher to the students only when the teaching is effective. As a service to the teaching
community, IEEE Madras Section under educational activity had organized Teacher In-service program
(TISP). This program served as an excellent opportunity to increase the level of understanding among the
pre- university educators. It enhanced the level of technological literacy of pre-university educators and
gave guidance to pre-university educators on professional development areas that students need. It
identified ways on how the pre-university educators can assist schools and school system in technological
literacy. About 82 teachers participated from various schools and got benefited.
VI) Motivational Awards
During annual general body meeting (AGM), every year, Cash awards and appreciation
certificates are announced based on the performance of the student chapters and society chapters.
The student chapters having maximum number of members are also honored during the AGM.
During the last year, appreciation certificates were given to top 3 best performing Student
Branches and 18 society chapters of the section. These awards were distributed during the Annual
General Body meetings, to motivate the student branches to perform better and it resulted in
enhancement in the formation of student branches and also better active performance of the

IEEE Madras Women in Engineering organizes Green Technology Entrepreneurial Model for Tribal
development With support from Region 10 Women in Engineering And IEEE Women in Engineering
Committee
29
The greatest challenge in India is proper provision of social justice to the rural and tribal people,
by ameliorating their socio-economic conditions. They constitute the weakest section of India's population,
from the ecological, economic and educational perspective. Madras IEEE Women in Engineering has
developed a special model to provide self employment training to the Tribes in villages near Coimbatore
and developing entrepreneurial skills among them so as to improve their socio economic conditions.
In this project the people from different age groups and different educational qualifications are
segregated to focus on the best programs suited to them and this increases the productivity better. Some of
the training programs proposed are paper bag, paper plate and cups Manufacturing, Coir Rope making,
Mosquito coils manufacturing, Banana fiber products making, Organic Farming, handicrafts making etc
for girls and ladies with poor educational background and computer and electrical appliances training for
people with good educational qualifications.
As a first step, the Madras IEEE WIE along with KCT student branch in collaboration with the
Ecogreen unit of Tamilnadu Agricultural University organized an awareness program in the government
school at Kembanaickenpalayam to promote the uses of banana fibre which serves as a base for everything
from making handbags to full fledged clothes.
The aim of organizing this event was to bring to light the multifarious uses of banana fibre to the
rural masses. During the initial market study conducted by Madras IEEE WIE, it was found that though
there is a very good market for the goods the supply does not match the demand. So a model was
developed to bring the supply equivalent to demand. For this it was decided that the rural masses can be
reached through the school children. So the first programme was organized for the school children with
their parents.
The first phase of the project ended with educating them with the design and development of
various products using banana fibre following with some networking sessions like quiz and group
activities which were taken up with enthusiasm by the students.
The second phase was started as full fledged training programs for women and parents in two
places. First project is Coir products making Training at Bodipalayam, which is a rural village 15 Km
away from pollachi town. The training is for 15 days. Mrs.Laila Trainer, Coir board, Govt. of India is a
well experienced faculty in coir products making. She encouraged the participants initially to make a
simple coir product each. Mrs.Manju motivated 14participants to join in this training program. Majority
of the participants are school drop outs, widows and separated women. They expressed that this training
programme improves their socio economic status and increase their self confidence.
Second project is a training program of Jute bag making at Pollachi. Ms.Roopini is the project
coordinator. She also helps the people by arranging loans from national bank, NABARD etc., for sustained
development and maps the pupils for training according to their interest and current job. In this Training 15
Tailors have participated. Mrs.Sri Devi, Trainer of this program, has more than 6 years experience in Jute
bag making. Since the participants are already tailors, they simply grasp and learn quickly the jute bag
making. They are very happy to attend this programme, because it gives them a supplement earning during
the off season periods and paves the way for a stable income throughout the year.
PART C - OTHERS
C.1 Relationship with National Societies

C.2 Special Events:
STAR programme
The WIE Students’ Chapter of Kongu Engineering College conducted a STAR Programme for a team of
students belonging to the 10th grade of Municipal High School, Edaiyankattuvalasu, Erode on the 2nd of
February 2013. The squad of 42 students were accompanied by four teachers. The aim of the programme
was to spread a word of awareness about the latest technologies and the various career opportunities open
up for them once they terminate their schooling. The session was initiated by a career guidance
presentation to the students by Prof.K.Narayanan-Staff co-ordinator of IEEE. A lot of team building and
brain training activities were conducted in the morning. This included puzzle solving, a general knowledge
quiz, tissue roll, Tongue Twister and other team events to improve their concentration and performance.
All the students were given a chance to come up to the stage boldly and to face the audience. . Lunch was
then provided to them. This was followed by a field visit, in which the students were given hands on
exposure to a few of the sophisticated laboratories in the college. The students were exposed to the
infrastructure of the college as well. The students thoroughly enjoyed the programme and participated with
complete enthusiasm. Finally, an interaction session was conducted in which, valuable feedback was
obtained from the students and the teachers. Certificates were given to the winners of various events.
Rainbow project
IE was planning for its “Rainbow project” to be conducted for school students in a rural area. The main
objective of this project is “Bringing together technical knowledge from the learned and application of this
knowledge in rural areas”. With the guidance of IEEE-Student Branch co-ordinator Prof.A.Darwin Jose
Raju and IEEE- Student Branch counselor Prof.C.John Mosses and WIE faculty Prof.Subitha, the affinity
group had its meeting regarding the project for 2 times. During the same we had discussions regarding the
events to be held and respective persons to organize the tasks were chosen and hence members were
splitted into groups for each class. Totally there were 7 groups. As such we selected St.Josephs Middle
school located in Kutakuzhi for implementing our project. It was a serious discussion about engaging those
students in various events and mentor them. Suggestions were asked from the members and faculties.
As planned we reached St.Josephs Middle school on13th march 2013.Around 35 members reached the
school from our Student Branch along with the faculties at 9:30am. About 120 children were studying in
the school. Each group went to their respective classes to start the competitions. Students welcomed us
with great enthusiasm and also participated actively. Competitions like filling the bottle, drawing, singing,
elocution, musical chair and some more spot events were conducted for the respective classes. Winner and
the
1st
runner
up
were
chosen
from
each
event.
Also we had a science project done by our college students for those children. The main objective of the
exhibition was that the children will extract better knowledge about science, plus they'll gain or practice
several other scientific skills. We were granted fund for rainbow project from IEEE Madras Section. We
bought pen, chocolates and toys for those children from the same and gifted them.
Then we had the pack up ceremony by a prayer song sung by WIE choir followed by a welcome speech
given by Ms.Dhivya, StMIEEE and then the Head Mistress of the school gave a talk to the students about
our project. As a part of encouragements prizes were given for the children who won in respective
competitions. At last the program came to end by a vote of thanks given by Ms.Bavithra, Secretary of WIE.
Our students returned college with blossoming memories.
Terracota Jewelry making workshop
The Student branch of Kumaraguru College of Technology organized a "Terracota Jewelry making
workshop" for government school children in a rural village "Kembanaickenpalayam" near Annur,
coimbatore on 27th and 28th April, 2013. A group of 30 students from 8th standard class participated in
the training. The project started with educating the students with the design of various terracota products
and how to make the jewelry. This is followed by the making of the jewelry from clay and painting them
with their own choice of colors.
31
WIE STAR
The WIE Affinity Group of Jeppiaar Engineering College organized STAR Program on July 09, 2013. The
Second year IEEE members of our college made simple projects which could be easily deciphered by the
6th, 7th and 8th grade students. Around 28 teams participated and from which 14 teams were selected. The
selected students were taken to the Thiruporur Government Boys Hr. Sec School. Under the guidance of
the volunteers, students demonstrated the projects in each class. The projects included Lemon Battery,
Homemade Electroscope, Homemade Burglar Alarm, Proximity Sensor, Clinometer, etc.,. The school
students, about four hundred in number, showed great interest and enthusiasm in learning new things. In
order to motivate them, fun activities involving science were conducted and IEEE Goodies were provided
for the students who answered questions at the end of the session. After the presentations of the projects,
our execom members Krishna VS and Shiv Prashad presented some inspirational and innovative videos to
