After dropping game one with a poor second half, we were consigned to the bottom half of the draw and PNG were to be
our opposition in game two – a fantastic game with scores level minutes from the
end but we found the footy and goals for the deciding major. Friday brought the
challenge for fifth spot against Brisbane team the Bushrangers and a great four
quarter game was played by the Power to run out clear winners.
Well done to all the players, coaches and support staff in making this opportunity
such a memorable experience.
Please check out our website for full match details within the early July story and
check in next week for all the award details.

AFL Kids First
As we approach finals footy it is a
good time to remind all of our
responsibilities to the game –
respect to all, players, coaches,
umpires and all other officials. We
will witness some great footy over
the three weeks of finals so sit
back, enjoy and appreciate the efforts of all our young AFL aspirants
in their game.
Club Strategic Plans
The off season maybe fast approaching but this is an ideal time
for planning and setting the direction and wishes for the club in the
coming year and importantly medium term of three years. A number
of our clubs have set dates with
their Club Coordinators to go
through this most important
process giving strong direction
moving forward.

t has been a very busy month in school footy
with a number of competitions being held. Tuesday 19th July saw 6 girls teams battle out the Senior Division of the Brisbane Lions cup with Mountain Creek being the dominant side of the day. The
Creekers will head down to Zillmere later next
month to compete in the Pool finals against Brisbane South East and Brisbane North.
In the Northern States Cup, Mountain Creek has progressed through to the Grand Final
which will be played on Wednesday 3rd August at the Gabba against Palm Beach Currumbin. Mountain Creek easily accounted for St Andrews Cairns and Benowa State School
at Coorparoo two weeks ago. We wish Mountain Creek the best of luck in the Grand Final.
Go Boys!
In the Gold Coast SUNS cup we have Stella Maris who is representing the Sunshine
Coast. The finals of the Gold Coast SUNS cup is being played at Metricon Stadium on the
Gold Coast on Thursday 4th August. The boys will play in 2 games, and if they can win
their first game they will then play off in the Grand Final to be crowned state winners! Good
Luck to Stella Maris Primary.
Josh Drummond Cup
T
he 2011 Josh Drummond Cup began this week, with 16 teams from
across the Coast taking part, including newcomers Coolum SHS. The
Josh Drummond Cup is for boys in Years 10-12 and is being played every
Wednesday night after school at various venues across the coast.
Round 1 of the 2011 competition started on Wednesday 27th July with
Unity, Siena, St Andrews, Coolum and Matthew Flinders all putting in great
efforts. Reigning champions St John‟s also looked the goods and will be
hard to beat again this year. We look forward to seeing some great footy to
come.
Call to Arms
Congratulations to the Caloundra Panthers who hosted a
successful Call to Arms day on Sunday 24th July. The Call
to Arms initiative has been developed to promote about
men‟s cancer. The club raised money for the cause through
a number of avenues including auctioning off some great
sporting memorabilia, hair colouring and nail art as well as
some delicious yellow cupcakes.
Nice work Panthers!
Cystic Fibrosis
F
or the third year running, the AFL Sunshine Coast Juniors and our clubs
will dig deep to support Cystic Fibrosis Queensland (CFQ) with a fundraising weekend. All local umpires will wear special red CFQ shirts for the
weekend and will be accepting donations at each club.
Coach of the Sunshine Coast Umpires and CFQ parent, Tony Boyanton,
instigated the event as a way of increasing community awareness of cystic
fibrosis (CF) and raising vital funds for local people with the chronic illness.
So if you„re out and about at the football on the weekend of August 12-14, look out for the
donation tins and please dig deep and support Cystic Fibrosis Queensland.

Umpiring update
T
he progress of the umpires is certainly on an upward trend with 10 of our
“Green Shirt” umpires all coming along well with three of them progressing
up to U14 footy and doing a competent job. Our second & third year umpires
are going well exceeding expectation by officiating U16 footy. Unfortunately
what we do lack is age & maturity, many of our older umpires have either
moved on with work or retired from the game altogether hence 16 & 17 year
olds umpiring the majority of U16 footy where a stronger head is required. If
you have been around the game for years, give your support by blowing the
whistle from time to time.

Coach & Volunteer Awards
Hundreds of people will gather tonight to acknowledge all the fine
contributions made by leaders at
our community clubs – quality volunteers and most commendable
coaches will be highlighted.
The event is being held at Maroochy RSL Club and will incorporate the Suncoast Power annual
awards for under 14‟s and 16‟s and
general recognition of past Sunshine Coast players having success in 2011.
Check out the Juniors Website next
week for a full summary.
Finals are almost upon us and the training track has seen an increase of pressure to be selected for the big games. Like players, umpires come under scrutiny and have to push their case to be selected. I am pleased to say that there
are about 25 to 30 regular attendees at training each week giving their all and
everyone is vying for a position weather they be field, boundary or goal umpiring.
Marching up the senior list this year we have had 9 umpires from the coast umpire in either
QAFL or NEAFL games this year up from last years figure of four. Peter Folley, Nathan &
Brad Scott, Tyler Higson in field, Andrew Fox, Brendan Fenwick, Brendan Donahoo, Calvin
Tink, Rohan Briggs on boundary & Jake Cosmai in goals. Other young umpires moving
into senior footy & in the Development Squad are Adam Randall, Jabe Gerring, Justin Lillecrapp & Sheldon Judd. These four show plenty of promise & will be regulars in senior footy
before long which is a credit to our coaches for the hard work put in previous years.
Grants
S
ome of our clubs in 2011 have received some fantastic monies through government
grants, some significant projects this year have been lights at Kawana Park, clubhouse and lights at Bribie Island. From the January floods Gympie and Nambour & Hinterland Clubs have received monies for rectification work. Bribie Island Bulldogs just can‟t
stop the funding and have recently had success with $18K to build new coaches boxes
and do some field fencing work.
Now we all cross our fingers with the Sport & Recreation Qld Infrastructure grants program
as Nambour & Hinterland look to build new participants and officials amenities and Kawana Park a much needed change room/amenities block – significant support from the
AFL has also made these projects possible.
And at Gympie, change rooms and amenities are high on the agenda this coming off season as we look to secure additional monies to those currently accumulated from Flood
Fightback Sport & Rec Qld and the AFL.
The Coolum Beach Breakers also not wanting to miss out on facility development are looking to build a home for their canteen and creating storage space and small club room.
Big night at the Kennel
F
riday 12th August will see a big evening at the Bribie Island Bulldogs Kennel as the club sets itself to showcase its facility with an official opening to
its fantastic new facility and official flicking on of the full ground lighting.
It has been a big year at the kennel, joining the Sunshine Coast Juniors competition and an extreme makeover of their facility – great work by Robyn Tozer and all on
the clubs committees.
So come 5pm that evening all will gather to acknowledge the contributions made and undertaken to make this grassroots AFL facility a standout within Queensland, youth matches
to follow.
