JIANGSU MARKET INSIGHTS

In 2015, Jiangsu maintained its position as the second largest provincial economy in China with GDP of 1.1
trillion USD and a growth rate of 8.5% (exceeding the national average of 6.9%).

The 13th 5-Year-Plan (2016-2020) places strong emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship. Jiangsu
provincial government has acknowledged the critical role of innovation in its economic transition. In 2015,
expenditure for R&D accounted for 2.55% (178.8 billion RMB) of the GDP in Jiangsu. Jiangsu is committed to
increase this investment to 2.8% of its GDP in the next five years.

The Jiangsu provincial government has mapped out long term strategies (“Three Steps and Two Plans”) to
upgrade its industries and transform the province into a global industrial science and technology innovation
centre by 2035. This includes transforming southern Jiangsu (including Nanjing, Wuxi, Changzhou, Suzhou
and Zhenjiang) into an innovation demonstration hub.

Jiangsu is also home to many Chinese venture capital companies with funds between 50 million RMB to 500
million. It also has one of China’s best IP protection frameworks with 8 Intellectual Property Protection
Centres and the only IP xxx court outside of China. Last year, enterprises in Jiangsu remained the most active
in IP application (150,000) and authorisation in China.

There are also 14 Chinese key research labs located in Jiangsu and more than 10,000 high-tech enterprises
in Jiangsu recognised by the Central Government as conducting research and innovation in areas
complimentary to Australia’s strengths including ICT, new materials, advanced manufacturing, bio-tech and
new medicines, new energy and efficiency, aviation, environment and clean tech, hi-tech services.

Jiangsu is a major education hub and home to 137 higher education institutions, including 11 project 211
universities and 2 project 985 universities. These universities inject high-calibre ‘talent’ to the innovation
ecosystem. Jiangsu also has the largest number of people engaged in scientific development activities in
China - 750 thousand researchers.
