Motivation and Legal Framework
Increasing number of big birds return to civilized regions like
Germany
e.g. cranes, storks, owls, eagles…
High number of birds die by electric shock, after touching live
and earthed parts at poles of medium voltage OHL (10 … 30 kV)
Medium voltage OHL are
particularly unsafe cause of
small distances between live
and earthed parts.

Motivation and Legal Framework
German legislator published a law to protect big birds of
electrocution by landing on poles of medium voltage OHL
Actual version gives advice that all medium voltage OHL poles
nationwide have to be retrofitted with bird protection devices
to ensure security of birds against electric shock
Bird protection devices which are suitable for poles are
described in “German application guide for bird protection of
OHL”
Cause of little time for maintain retrofitting of poles there was big
demand of utilities for live working technologies

Basic requirements :
1. Protection of big birds of electric shock
2. Ensuring of electrical safety and security of supply of whole
retrofitted electrical equipment (poles, insulators, wires…)
3. Fast, simple and efficient installation of devices

Requirements for
Bird Protection Devices
No negative effect on dielectric strength of the electrical equipment
by bird protection device.
Used material for devices has to be flame retardant.
Used material has to be temperature resistant.
Used material has to be UV resistant.
Devices should not damage the OHL wire in case of wind forced
vibrations with and without ice load on the device.
Used material has to be resistant against high wind speed (140 km/h,
3 h).

Summary
Installation of bird protection devices at OHL are fast and cost
effective by using special designed devices for Live Working
Approx. 90 % of all bird protection devices can be installed by
Live Working
Bird protection devices look very simple. But for fulfilling all
requirements high number of tests is necessary.
BSD is the market leader in bird protection devices in Germany
and provides a wide range of bird protection devices to ensure
compliance with the legal demands regarding conservation of
environment.
