Legend:
*All courses listed must be completed to be considered equivalent to the one psychology course at SFSU.
** “Needs syllabus to verify” means that you must obtain a syllabus for that course. Further:
Note: Courses with an asterisk require additional documentation (syllabus) that the course meets our criteria.
The department does not pre-approve courses with asterisks. Students who take and submit these courses are
doing so at the risk of having the course rejected.
• For the Theories of Personality course: you must obtain the course syllabus from the appropriate institution and fax or email the syllabus to
the department so that the appropriate coordinator can approve the course. You will receive an email from the department within a week as to whether
or not the course has been accepted. Be sure that you write your full name and email address on the syllabus so that we can respond back to you.
• For the Lifespan Developmental Psychology course: obtain the course syllabus from the appropriate institution and first check that the course
covers the entire lifespan (from birth to death) before sending a copy of the syllabus to the department for verification.
If the syllabus does not mention the entire lifespan (e.g. conception, adolescence, adulthood, and old age), then you can assume that the course is not
equivalent and must therefore take the course at another institution. Once you can initially verify that the course covers the entire lifespan,
then fax or email the syllabus to the department so that the appropriate coordinator can approve the course. You will receive an email from
the department within a week as to whether or not the course has been accepted. Be sure that you write your full name and email address
on the syllabus so that we can respond back to you.
Since these are undergraduate level courses, they are generally offered under similar titles across different Universities.
If you are interested in taking the prerequisites at another school (not listed in the above list), please check your school’s Catalogue or Bulletin
and match the appropriate courses to the psychology prerequisites at SFSU. The course title should be pretty clear as to whether or not the course
meet our requirements. For example, we require a lifespan developmental psychology course. If the title of the course you are interested in at
another institution only says “Developmental Psychology”, then you will need to verify that the class covers psychological development throughout
the entire lifespan, i.e. from birth to death. Use that institution’s course bulletin, catalog, or online descriptions for verification. Refer to the
bullet points in the legend above for further instructions.
For your reference, the SFSU course descriptions are:
1) PSYC 431 – Lifespan Developmental Psychology. Fundamental principles of developmental psychology; origin and development of behavior.
Must be a course that spans throughout the lifespan, i.e. from birth to death.
2) PSYC 451 – Theories of Personality. Survey of the major contemporary theories of personality. Theoretical positions are compared and
critically examined along various significant dimensions, including their relationships to the total field of psychology. Methods of personality
assessment as related in theory construction.
3) PSYC 452 – Abnormal Psychology, Minor Variants of Personality. The nature and development of emotional disturbances which result in
a person's failure to adapt adequately in this society; contemporary theories of personality development as well as a clinical description of the neuroses.
Note: Psychopathology, which is the science or study of mental disorders, is also known as Abnormal Psychology.
