Sultan Qaboos University announces its postgraduate programs for Omani and
international students. Programs to start in September 2016

General Admission Requirements for PhD Programs:
1. Applicant must be a master’s degree holder, from Sultan Qaboos University, or any other recognized
institution in a field related to the program applied for.
2. Applicant must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 3.00 on a 4.00 point
scale or equivalent. The Deanship of Postgraduate Studies will make the assessment for equivalency
acceptance.
3. Applicant working in Oman must submit a release letter for 4 years from employer. addressed to the
dean of postgraduate studies at SQU. Unemployee Omani applicants need to submit a statement from
The Public Authority of Manpower Register documenting the unemployment status of the applicant.
4. Applicant must submit a statement on objectives and goals of the research proposed.
5. Applicant must submit three letters of references, at least two from academics, to show competence
in the discipline of interest and research capability.
6. Applicant must submit an English Proficiency Test Certificate with the level required for the program
applied for, provided that the test date is less than two years from the date of the announcement.
General Admission Requirements for Masters Programs & Postgraduate
Diploma:
1. Applicant must be an undergraduate degree holder, from Sultan Qaboos University, or any other
recognized institution in a field related to the program applied for.
2. Applicant must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 2.75 on a 4.00 point
scale or equivalent. The Deanship of Postgraduate Studies will make the assessment for equivalency
acceptance.
3. Applicant with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) between 2.5 and 2.74 on a 4.0 point scale
may be considered for admission subject to work experience and any other academic activity.
4. Applicant must submit an English Proficiency Test Certificate with the level required for the program
applied for, provided that the test date is less than two years from the date of this announcement.
5. Applicant must submit a release letter or a study leave from employer for full-time study or
a no objection letter for part-time study, addressed to the Dean of Postgraduate Studies at SQU.
Unemployee Omani applicants need to submit a statement from The Public Authority of Manpower
Register documenting the unemployment status of the applicant.
Postgraduate Studies Scholarships
All postgraduate programs are subject to the university tuition fees, which can be found by referring to the
web page of the Deanship www.squ.edu.om/ps. However SQU provides scholarships for candidates to
compete for according to the scholarship’s criteria stated on the Deanship web page. Applicants can apply
for the scholarships by filling up the scholarship section in the online application form.
1. Sultan Qaboos University Scholarships
Sultan Qaboos University offers a total of 105 scholarships for both Omani and International students distributed
among Doctoral and Master’s programs.
2. Shell Chair Sponsorships
Shell Chair offers two sponsored grants for Omanis only who are interested to enroll in the Master program of
Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering and Master of Earth Sciences. Also, it offers two scholarships to enroll for
Doctoral programs in Petroleum Engineering, Chemical and Process Engineering and Earth Sciences.

Note:
• Applicant who meets the admission requirements may be invited for an assessment as per program requirement
• Certificate and Transcripts submitted must be authenticated.
• Accepted candidate needs to have their qualifications equivalence by Ministry of Higher Education in Oman
before starting their study, and admission will be cancelled if equivalency is not approved
• Applications, which do not meet admission requirements or authentication, will not be considered.
• Admitted candidates can be given unconditional offer if all requirements are met or conditional offer if English,
release or non-objection letter requirements will subsequently be fulfilled before 8/9/2016.
• If conditionally admitted candidate fail to meet the requirement by 8/9/2016, then the possibility of deferring the
admission to the next semester will be considered, otherwise admission could be cancelled.
• Admitted candidate with English level 5.5 in IELTS or 69 in TOEFL can join an English course during the first
semester before registering for a Master or PhD program and should pass it.
• Receipt of an application by the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies does not commit the University to accept the
candidate.
• The University reserves the right not to offer a program, if there is an insufficient number of applicants.
• Documents must be uploaded in (PDF or jpg ) format only.
• Candidates admitted conditionally into the Master program by taking bridging courses must fulfill the Master
program English requirement as specified in the program description before starting the bridging courses.
• Student admitted in the program and who fulfills the scholarship requirements is not automatically granted a
scholarship. Scholarships are distributed according to availability of funds and merits of the student.
