Description
Cooper Power Systems surge
arrester/Type L interchangeable fuse
cutout combinations are available
in a wide variety of both arrester
and fuse cutout designs. Surge
arresters are available in silicone
rubber (UltraSIL™ polymer-housing)
or porcelain-housing in heavy-duty,
normal-duty or heavy-duty riser
pole classifications, and UltraSIL
Polymer-Housed Evolution™ surge
arrester designs in ratings 3-36 kV.
Type L fuse cutouts are available with
silicone rubber (UltraSIL polymerinsulated) or porcelain insulators for
both 15 kV and 27 kV voltage ratings.
Extra creepage designs are available
for porcelain Type L cutouts to meet
the user’s application needs.
Cutouts are available with a 100 A
or 200 A fuseholder or with a 300 A
disconnect blade. Type L cutouts
will also accommodate a Cooper
Power Systems ELF™ full range
current-limiting fuse and Tandem
ELF backup fuse with series fuse link
(refer to catalog section 240-66 for
more detailed information on the ELF
fuse and catalog section 240-67 for
Tandem ELF).
Combining the functions of a
distribution-class surge arrester with a
fuse cutout provides the convenience
of a compact, efficient unit with less
pole-top hardware. Combining these
units also provides easier installation,
handling and procurement.
All surge arresters used in the
surge arrester/Type L fuse cutout
combinations have been tested to,
and meet or exceed, all requirements
of IEEE Std C62.11™-2005
standard, “IEEE Standard for MetalOxide Surge Arresters for Alternating
Current Power Circuits”.
UltraSIL polymer-insulated and
porcelain Type L cutouts have been
tested to and meet, or exceed, all
requirements set forth by the latest
revisions of IEEE Std C37.41™2008 and IEEE Std C37.42™-2009
standards.

Construction
Connectors/Brackets
Surge arrester/Type L fuse cutout
combination comes complete
with a crossarm mounting bracket
for application on the utility pole
crossarm. Standard arrester line and
ground terminal hardware includes
a silicon bronze nut, a stainless
steel wire clamp and a line lead. The
arrester line and ground terminal
fits a conductor range of #6 (.184”
diameter) to 2/0 standard (.418”
diameter).
Figure 1 shows an UltraSIL polymerhoused surge arrester/UltraSIL
polymer-insulated Type L fuse
cutout combination. Fuse links are
not included in this package. Refer
to catalog section K-SEC 100 for
ordering information about Cooper
Power Systems fuse links.
Surge arrester/Type L fuse cutout
combination includes, as a standard,
a tin plated bronze parallel-groove
connector on the cutout. The parallelgroove connector fits a conductor
range of #8 solid (.128” diameter)
to 250 MCM (.575” diameter). A
tin plated bronze eyebolt and large
eyebolt connector options are also
available. The eyebolt connector fits
a conductor range of #8 solid (.128”
diameter) to 2/0 standard (.418”
diameter) and the large eyebolt
connector fits a conductor range of
#8 solid (.128” diameter) to 250 mcm
(.575” diameter).
Surge arrester/Type L fuse cutout
combinations include a heavyduty NEMA® crossarm mounting
bracket to withstand the mechanical
forces generated during fault
current interruptions when using an
expulsion fuse link. Surge arrester/
Type L fuse cutouts are also available
with an extended crossarm mounting
bracket or without brackets.

Surge Arrester/Type L Fuse Cutout Combinations
To specify the appropriate connector
and bracket options, simply change
the fifth and sixth digits of the catalog
number as shown in Table 3.
(Example: S4B1E1A003D0A UltraSIL
polymer-insulated cutout with digits
5 and 6 equaling E1, will include an
eyebolt connector and the NEMA®
crossarm mounting bracket with
a 10 kV UltraSIL polymer-housed
HD VariSTAR™ arrester.) Consult
your Cooper Power Systems
representative for other connector/
bracket options.
