Narrative Description of the School and Community
The city of Elkhart has a population that exceeds 51,000. The median household income is $47,400. According to the 2000 census, the population consisted of 36,328 whites, 7,649 blacks, 7,678 Hispanics, and 913 others. Employment in the area focuses mainly on the recreational vehicle industry, manufactured housing, and musical instruments.
The closing of a large pharmaceutical company in Elkhart has caused a loss of whitecollar jobs that have not been replaced. This has caused a negative economic impact on the area.
North Side Middle School enrolls approximately 700 students in 7 th
and 8 th
grades. In the year of 2007-2008 North Side enrollment consisted of 409 white, 109 black, 127
Hispanic, 8 Asian, and 4 multi-racial students. NSMS enrolled 321 female and 379 male students. Our biggest change in population has been the growth of students on free and reduced lunch.
