Smoothing choke L in a switching controller
Elementary points
Linear smoothing chokes are used with power supplies working as to the forward converter principle
as well as clocked linear voltage regulators. They have to smooth the pulsating DC current while
storing the energy during the time of current flow and retaining the current flow in the load circuit
during the brake times. Therefore inductances with high DC bias are required. Hence smoothing
chokes used with modern power supplies have to meet high demands, e.g. high storage energy in
small volumes and low losses with high clock frequencies. Furthermore they have to be cost effective.
