A big welcome if you are new to Emmanuel – please say hello
to one of our clergy, wardens or stewards as they would love to meet you
and give you a welcome booklet which tells you a bit about us.
Reflecting relationship
H
ow we relate to God and
each other is a big deal. It
really is. Our relationships
can define us, hinder or help our
development, provide our greatest
tests and our greatest blessings. We
are encouraged to treat each other
with love - supporting, showing
kindness and hospitality (and that’s
not always about having people
round for dinner!). How we interact
reflects our understanding of God.
We reflect what we receive from
God and to fully receive we must be
open to the idea of being fully
known by Him, even those bits
we’re ashamed of, the things we find
embarrassing or just shrug off and
don’t acknowledge as important.
There is wisdom in being honest
about our shortcomings and facing
up to the reasons for our behavior
behind what seems perfectly
justifiable. Jesus praised the
honesty and simplicity of the tax
collector’s prayer “God, have mercy
on me, a sinner” for demonstrating
exactly what he spoke about in the
Sermon on the Mount: “Blessed are
the poor in spirit, for theirs is the
kingdom of heaven”. We looked at
this recently when we explored
weakness and strength a few weeks
ago. God’s power and love is
abundant and he is able to act most
effectively when we are most
honest about our situation.
We have been studying Esau, and
Katherine Ladd spoke last week on
the issues within Esau’s family envy, favouritism etc. It’s easy to
wish we had what someone else has
or choose to spent time with the
people we prefer (back to
hospitality) rather than be open to
people God would have us interact
with. We have been placed in a
family and God is a God of
relationship. It’s the nature of the
Trinity and what He desires for us
but it’s not just about how each of
us individually relates to God. Psalm
145:8 says: The Lord is gracious and
compassionate, slow to anger and rich
in love. The Lord is good to all, he has
compassion on all he has made.
Our understanding of God is
shown in how we relate to each
other.

The Alpha Course
Alpha is a 10 week course exploring the Christian faith. Each week looks at a
different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. Alpha is
run all around the globe and everyone is welcome, regardless of faith or
background. Each evening consists of food, a talk and good conversation.
Our Alpha Course is on Tuesday evenings starting on 4 October and running
until 29 November in the Arch Room. Cake, tea and coffee will be provided.
Do you have questions about the Christian faith, or know someone who does? Please contact
Brian or Judith Cox if you would like to come along: bedeclose@btinternet.com / 0208 8660883.
Macmillan coffee mornings

your home for your neighbours and friends
this Friday 30 September? Building
relationships for a great cause. Contact Adam
to register your location and time.
If you lead a home group then please come to
the home group leaders’ meeting tomorrow,

8.15pm.

Men’s curry night
This Saturday (1 October) we are gathering as
a church family to enjoy a hog roast in the
Africa Lounge and hall. Tickets are just £5 and
include a pork roll and sides plus pudding

community event so please invite local friends
and neighbours to come too. Perhaps you
could buy a ticket for them? Tickets available

The next men’s
curry night is
Monday 10
October at 7.30pm.

Harvest Appeal
- Send a Cow
Our 2016 Harvest
celebration is next
Sunday 2 October.
This year for our
Harvest Appeal we are
raising money for the
charity Send a Cow
(www.sendacow.org).
Instead of the usual contributions of food and
goods we are asking you instead to dig deep
into your pockets and help us raise money to
support families in Africa.
‘Gifts that Grow are the basic essentials
that families need to manage their land,
market their produce, share their knowledge
with neighbours and start educating their
children. With £255 you can give a family
everything they need to produce a harvest for
life’. We would love to support at least one
family with a one-off gift of £255, but it would
be amazing to do even more than this.
You have one week left to raise some
money - look down the back of the sofa and
raid your piggy banks. Envelopes will be
provided at the back of church for your gifts.
An evening with Jeff Lucas
Family tea
8 October
4.00–6.00pm
Don’t forget to sign up for the
family tea! Games, craft, fun
and food all provided for free.
We would love to see as many
of you there as possible. Please
see the flyers at back of church for more
information or email Sarah (see back page for
details). RSVP by 2 October.
Picking up children after
Shine on a Sunday
As part of our desire to provide a safe place
for your children on a Sunday we are asking
that all children in Shine (years 1–6) are
picked up by a parent immediately after
church finishes and before you settle down
for a coffee and chat in the Africa Lounge. If
you are happy for your children to be released
without a parent, can you please email us (see
back page) stating your child’s name and
confirming they can leave on their own.
Alternatively, we will have some permission
slips available in Shine for you to complete.
Many thanks.
London City Mission
There will be a meeting to pray for the work of
the London City Mission on Monday
26 September at 2pm at 13 New Farm Lane.
All are welcome.
Ladies’ Italian night
We are hosting a night of the ‘there are no
ordinary people’ Jeff Lucas tour on Saturday 19
November - an unforgettable evening of
storytelling, theatre, music and mirth tracing the
story of Barnabas and calling us to live the
everyday life in a beautiful way. Paper tickets
are now available from the church office at a
cost of £13 or can be bought online from http://
searchlighttheatre.org/jeff-lucastour/4592462824.
Following feedback that not all our ladies are big
curry fans, we are planning a Ladies’ Italian night
at the Northwood Piazza (at the bottom of
Green Lane opposite the Misty Moon pub) on
Wednesday 19 October. Price to be confirmed
shortly. Please let the office know if you would
like to attend, as numbers are limited to 25
people. Speak to Rachael for more information
or if you have any questions.
‘Find your voice’ course
Foodbank
The Dioceses of London are running a 4 week
course on Monday evenings starting on 31
October at St Mellitus College exploring how
to share our faith with the people we meet
every day. Do please pick up a flyer from the
back of church if you are interested in
attending.
Thank you for your continued support of the
foodbank. Your donations have helped so
many people who struggle to put food on their
tables – sometimes even going without food
for days to make sure that there is enough for
their children to eat. At the moment there is an
acute shortage of tins of tomatoes, tinned
fruit, sugar, and long life cartons of fruit juice.
If you could donate any of these, it would be
very much appreciated. The longer the use by
date the more useful your donation will be.
Also, we would be very grateful for any
toiletries (both men’s and ladies’), as we are a
little short at the moment.
Christian Aid 2016 Report
Please see the notice board at the back of
church displaying thank you letters. There you
will see a letter from Clare Paine, London
Church Coordinator for Christian Aid. It
records sincere thanks for the church
collections from St John’s URC, Emmanuel
Church, Oakland’s Gate Methodist and Holy
Trinity.
The total sum raised by these four
communities in Northwood amounted to
£2728.08. The largest donation was made by
Emmanuel for the sum of £1225.13 - this sum
surpassed the amount we donated last year.
Thank you for your support for this
important charity, whose motto is ‘We believe
in life before death.’
- GRAHAM FRANCIS
Parish Reps
As recently shared at our Meeting of
Parishioners, the PCC needed to chose a new
Parish Representative to join Mirka Packard
on the interview panel for our prospective
vicar on Monday 21 November.
Colin Sheppard offered to be that person and
the PCC unanimously took him up on his offer
at their meeting on Monday evening.
Knit and Natter
The Coffee Shop is looking to start a ‘Knit and
Natter/Crochet’ morning for a charity. This
will be a group of knitters of all ability levels to
meet up, chat, knit and make friends. The
Coffee Shop team are looking for someone to
help set this up and get it up and running.
Please contact Liz Chorley if this is something
you could help with.
Joan Winifred Cook
Please pray for the family of Joan Winifred
Cook follow her passing. The funeral is set for
Monday 3 October. Johnny will be leading a
thanksgiving service at 11.00am in church and
then 12.15pm at Breakspear crematorium.
Harrison Whitmarsh's
Baptism
If you know and love Sharon, Jon and Harrison
then they would love to invite you to
Harrison's baptism and tea party on Sunday 16
October at4.30pm in the Africa Lounge.
Harrison will be baptised in the evening
service which follows the tea party.
News from the Talbots
Mike and Jan have sent an update of what they
have been up to in Cumbria over the last 9
months since they left Northwood. Due to its
length we were unable to include it in Connect
so there are printed copies at the back of
church for anyone who would like one.
Prayers
Johnny and Julie would value your prayers for
the united congregations of the Westlake
church family in Europe as they lead their
church weekend next weekend. They will be
leading five bible teaching sessions and two
seminars as well as having more than a few
pastoral conversations.

Daily Bible Readings
To grow in our Christian life we need food. Reading the Bible gives us the food that our spirit needs
to flourish. Just as our body can’t live without food, our spirit cannot live without the word of God.
If you read the Bible and take time to be with God each day your relationship with God will stay
fresh and alive. We hope the readings below will help in this.
