Web Finishing
World-class web finishing solutions
Starting their business with a treadle letterpress unit, Gurgaon based Mehta Print Arts Pvt Ltd has come a long way
by installing India’s first Hunkeler Variweb. This hi-tech machine is designed to produce variable data solutions for
value-addition in direct marketing initiatives.
With Hunkeler’s Variweb enormous customised value added or
web finishing products and
variable data printing and
encoding solutions are possible.
In less than six months of
installing the Hunkeler Variweb,
Shuchi and Sumant Mehta - the
third generation of family-owned
Mehta Print Arts Pvt Ltd (MPA),
have developed 30 to 35 innovative products on Variweb. “We
are developing solutions ourselves in sync with the needs of
the Indian customers. For this, we
first study their requirements and
then propose the right product,”
told Shuchi proudly.
Both Shuchi and Sumant joined
the family business on August 1,
2006. These qualified MBAs are
passionate in bringing the new
applications in web-finishing
with their newly installed Variweb from Hunkeler. Variweb is a
modular web finishing system
designed for a multitude of
same sheet, hence the need for
separate envelope is done away
with. “Such mailers are sealed
by special sealing equipment for
this purpose. We have partnered
with a sealing equipment company,
which offers these equipments at
speeds of 100 pages/min”,
added Sumant.

applications including integrated
cards and peel-offs, personalised
one-part mailers, mailers with
integrated reply cards and
envelopes, and pop-up pieces, to
name a few. It is flexible and
modular with the capability to
expand and add to a line at any
time, as product needs change.
At speeds up to 492 feet per
minute, the user friendly Variweb
is designed with state-of-the-art
technology to produce finished
pieces with highest quality.
To produce RFID products such as
luggage tags, loyalty cards,
contact-less access cards, and to
provide other asset management
and supply chain solutions, MPA
has tied up with a Bangalore
based firm. Some other products,
which have been highly appreciated, are one-part mailers,
wherein one can print the
information and address on the
So what is the reaction which
Shuchi and Sumant get when
they show their products to their
prospective clients?
“It’s an exhilarating experience
as the first reaction we get is ‘wow, we did not know these
solutions existed in India’,” told
Shuchi proudly. “Since these
applications are new to the Indian
market, we need to educate the
customers of the linked benefits
to these. Even though it is
challenging but we are proud to
bring new technology to our
country,” added Sumant as a
matter of fact.

MPA has already roped in a handful of
clients from different segments like banking,
insurance, retail and telecom – where the
need for variable data printing is huge. “We
are tapping the customers sectorwise and
geography is not a limitation,” told Shuchi.
With a significant investment in Hunkeler’s
Variweb, they have an installed capacity of
producing 6 to 7 million customised documents per month. “Together with an existing
Web Finishing Line from Hunkeler, we have
a capacity to produce 10 million pressuresealed mailers per month. Initially, we will be
producing 3 million documents per month,
which would increase with time,” told
Sumant confidently.
The company is also upgrading its current
infrastructure to handle quality jobs at high
speeds. In order to produce quality products
on art paper, MPA has installed a Drent
5-colour printing machine with UV with a
speed of 200 m/min and 43 cm cut-off.
“This roll-to-roll machine has been refurbished
by Drent themselves. It can handle printing
on paper, foil and film,” told Sudhir Mehta,
director of the company.
Interestingly, Mehta Print Arts was started by
Late S N Mehta in 1967 with a meagre Rs
50 as a stationery supplier from their house
in Karol Bagh, New Delhi. Sudhir Mehta
soon joined the business and five years later
in 1971, the first printing machine was
installed. “It was a ‘Treadle’ letterpress handoperated machine and soon we installed a
TPH cylinder machine and one Russian PD
65,” recalled Sudhir. Even at that time, the
company was engaged in variable data
printing, which ofcourse was manual. “At

that time, we were handling jobs like lorry
receipts for transporters, which was a
tedious job with manual numbering. We also
handled guest cheques for 5-star hotels like
ITC, ITDC, Taj Group etc. The turning point in
our business came when we ventured into
printing of public issue stationery in 1980. In
1984, we installed our first offset machine.
And later, in 1993-94, we diversified into
envelope manufacturing,” told Subhash Ch
Mehta, MD of the company.
Today, Mehta Print Arts has an installed
capacity of producing 8 lacs envelopes
everyday, the sizes ranging from 3.5"ⴛ 2.3"
upto 12"ⴛ 8". However, they are able to
utilise their capacity to the tune of 6 lacs
envelopes per day. “Of these, 50% are printed
while 50% are blank for exports. These are
mixture of pre-gummed/self-adhesive/peel
and seal/self-seal/moisture and seal. We
use Indian paper from Andhra Mills,
Ballarpur or Century and are quite satisfied
with their quality,” added Subhash.
The company shifted its base to many sites,
until they settled themselves in Gurgaon in
2003. Both Sudhir and Subhash are responsible for sales and exports while their brother Sudesh Mehta takes care of the production and purchase. Their printing set-up
includes 3 Pressline web presses (4 colour +
4 colour), 5 computer stationery printers and
1 Multitec press in the web category. Their
sheetfed set-up houses 5-colour Komori press
and 1-colour Dominant press.
With such set-up, the company offers 360o
service in terms of designing, printing, personalisation, variable data printing, numbering, dispatch management, etc. Variable
data printing has been their forte since long
and the Hunkeler’s Variweb has added impetus to it.
