Ensuring a Rotary Screw Compressor is Right for Your Customer.
In deciding upon a new or replacement Compressor Unit, there are many factors that come into play to ensure
that your Customer is purchasing the correct Unit. These factors, some of which are indicated below, will
determine both the type (Piston or Rotary Screw) and the Horse Power of the Unit. And though the Customer may
have an idea as to what he wants based on any one factor, other factors may adjust the decision to a more
suitable alternative.
Price.
Generally speaking, the initial price of a Rotary Screw Unit is more than a comparable Piston Unit. For example, if
we compare 15 HP Tank Mounted Compressors c/w (1) 10 Micron Separator Filter and a 60 CFM Refrigerated
Air Dryer:

Installation:
Rotary Screw Compressors ingest great amounts of air for both cooling and compression, and have internal Fans
to keep the interior of the Cabinet relatively cool. Unless the Unit is installed in a large area where the air
temperature is between 10°C (50°F) and 40°C (104°F) and the quality of air is clean, you may consider both
intake and exhaust ducting.
Piston Units are somewhat more forgiving in this regard. Cooling is achieved with the Pump Flywheel, so you
must ensure there is a minimum of 0.5 meter (18”) between the Beltguard and any wall, obstruction, etc.
Maintenance:
Though regular maintenance on both types of Units can be done by the Customer, if they are not mechanically
inclined, they may wish to have a Service Technician familiar with Compressor Units complete the work.
Using the 15 HP Unit as an example, and suggesting that the Unit be run 2000 per year, suggested costs incurred
(less labour) for a two year period would be as follows:

Duty Cycles.
As indicated on Page 4, Rotary Screw Compressors have the ability to run almost 100% duty cycle for close to 24
hours a day, whereas an ‘HDI’ Piston Unit can run up to a 75 to 80% duty cycle, this based on an 8 hour a day
operation. This being said, having a Compressor run at a very limited duty cycle is not advisable, as condensation
will collect with the oil, potentially causing issues and/or damage to the Unit.

Comparison Between Rotary Screw and ‘HDI’ Piston Units.
DV Systems offers a full line of Rotary Screw Compressor Units, from the 5 HP ‘B Series’ up to the 100 HP ‘K
Series’. Rotary Screw Compressors are primarily used where there is a fairly steady air demand, the Units being
able to operate at a relatively high duty cycle relative to a Piston Compressor.
As well, the DV Systems Rotary Screw Units are enclosed in a Cabinet, making them quieter than a comparable
Piston Unit. This is often a Customer’s reason for purchasing a Screw Unit.
As a Compressor Unit is a long term investment as it will last for many years, you must assist the Customer in
purchasing the correct Unit, be it Rotary Screw or Piston, which best suits his air requirements. As well, though
under-sizing a Unit may have adverse affects on the Customer’s production, over-sizing a Unit is also not
advisable.
Noted below is a brief comparison of Rotary Screw and Piston (or commonly called ‘Reciprocating’) Compressor

The 5 Year (total) Motor Warranty applies only to 3 phase Motors and is available only if the Customer registers their
Compressor Unit with DV Systems. The first year of the warranty includes parts and labour, the remaining 4 years

Variable Speed Drive Air Compressor Units.
The purchase of a Compressor is only a small portion of the overall cost of having
a compressed air system. As shown in the chart at right, the initial purchase price
of a Compressor is a very small percentage of the overall cost of the system,
energy cost being by far the greatest portion.
Rotary Screw Compressors are generally suited to applications where there is a
fairly steady demand for compressed air. They can be run at close to 100% duty
cycle and can therefore be more tailored to suit your actual air demand, as
opposed to a Piston Compressor which, when run over an 8 hour day, has a
maximum duty cycle of approximately 75%.
There are several types of Rotary Screw Compressors available, these including
the following:
Modulating Compressor:
The Compressor Motor and Air End run continually at full speed, but the Intake Valve opens and closes
partially to accommodate changes in air demand.
Load/Unload Compressor:
The Unit operates similar to a Piston Compressor in that an internal Pressure Switch (Transducer) regulates
the Unit. When the Unit ‘loads’ and reaches maximum pressure, it idles or ‘unloads’ (runs but does not
compress air) until either a) the system pressure has dropped and the Unit is required to ‘load’ once again, or
b) the Unit shuts down.
Variable Speed Compressor:
The Unit runs similar in principle to the ‘Load/Unload’ Unit, but it is able to run at slower speeds to match
differing air demands through the day. The energy consumption when running slower is also decreased.
A Screw Compressor coupled with an internal Variable Speed Drive (‘VSD’ or
sometimes termed a Variable Frequency Drive ‘VFD’) can handle the constant
loads for an extended period of time, running at close to a 100% duty cycle, but it
can also be run at slower speeds to accommodate lower air demands at other
times of the day.
Variable speed drives can reduce the overall energy costs associated with
operating the Compressor Unit by simply controlling the speed of the Motor and Air
End to match consumption. The chart at right indicates a 25% savings for a VSD
Unit compared to a Modulating or Load/Unload Unit.
The Chart below gives an indication of energy costs for the various types of Screw
Compressors. Costs are based on a 100 HP Unit operating 2 shifts per day.

‘B Series’ – 10 HP Rotary Screw Air Compressor Units.
The ‘B10’ Rotary Screw Compressor Units employ a Variable Speed Drive (or ‘VSD’) to constantly match the Unit
output and energy use with the air demand. As the air demand changes, the VSD adjusts the Motor speed to
maximize energy efficiency. The VSD also starts the Unit by increasing the Motor speed gradually, this eliminating
the in-rush current spikes (and its associated energy cost) at start-up.
Please refer to Page 4 of this manual for further information concerning the advantages of purchasing a Unit with
a Variable Speed Drive.

Vibration Isolators.
The Vibration Pads absorb any vibration caused by the Unit and make up for any irregularities in the shop floor.
The 4” x 4” Pads are used with the ‘B’ and ‘C’ Series Units. The larger 8” x 8” Pads are generally used on the ‘D’,
‘G’, ‘SC’ ‘H’, ‘J’ and ‘K’ Screw Compressors . The Pads are comprised of layers of cork and neoprene.

Automatic Tank Drains.
The Compressor Tank must be drained on a daily basis, as per the manufacturer’s instructions. A buildup of water
in the Tank will a) limit the Compressor performance, b) potentially cause moisture in your air lines and c) cause
the Tank to deteriorate prematurely. An Automatic Drain, either Pneumatic or Electronic, may be purchased to
ensure that the draining is done on a regular basis.
